Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Night the Shadows Chose Him (Part 1)

Cold wind howled through the narrow streets of Blackridge City.

Rain poured from the dark sky like countless silver needles, striking the ground and turning the dusty roads into rivers of mud. Most of the city's residents had already retreated into their homes, hiding from the storm.

But one boy still ran through the rain.

His breathing was heavy, uneven.

His clothes were soaked, clinging tightly to his thin body as he sprinted through the alleyways.

Kael Draven.

Sixteen years old.

A nobody.

"Stop him!"

A furious voice echoed behind him.

Footsteps followed.

Three men chased him through the dark alley.

Kael didn't dare look back.

His legs burned from exhaustion, but he forced himself to keep running.

If they caught him…

He knew exactly what would happen.

Pain.

Broken bones.

Maybe even death.

The city of Blackridge wasn't kind to people like him.

Especially not to orphans.

Kael turned sharply into another narrow alley, nearly slipping on the wet stones.

"Damn it!" he muttered under his breath.

Why had today turned out like this?

It was supposed to be a normal day.

A miserable day, like every other day of his life.

But normal.

Until he made one terrible mistake.

Stealing.

Not food.

Not coins.

Something much worse.

Something he didn't even realize was valuable.

Earlier that evening, Kael had been wandering through the marketplace, hoping to find leftover scraps from the stalls.

His stomach had been empty for two days.

Two days.

Hunger made people desperate.

While passing a merchant's stall, he noticed a small black ring lying near the edge of the table.

It looked old.

Cheap.

Worthless.

The merchant was busy arguing with another customer.

Kael hesitated for only a second.

Then he took it.

Just like that.

He slipped the ring into his pocket and walked away.

He thought nothing of it.

But someone had seen him.

And that someone had immediately informed the merchant.

The merchant had not been just any merchant.

He belonged to the Iron Fang Guild.

One of the most feared organizations in Blackridge.

And now…

They were hunting him.

Kael's lungs burned as he sprinted through another alley.

The rain made it hard to see.

Lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating the narrow streets for a brief moment.

In that instant, Kael saw something ahead.

A dead end.

His heart sank.

"No…"

He skidded to a stop as the brick wall rose before him.

Behind him…

Footsteps grew closer.

Slow.

Confident.

Kael slowly turned around.

Three men stepped into the alley.

Large.

Rough-looking.

Each of them carried a weapon.

The one in the center cracked his knuckles.

"Thought you could run forever, brat?"

Kael clenched his fists.

"I didn't steal anything."

The men laughed.

"Lying won't help you now."

The tallest one stepped forward.

"You took something that doesn't belong to you."

Kael's mind raced.

The ring.

Was it really that important?

"I can give it back," he said quickly.

The men exchanged glances.

Then the leader smiled.

But there was no kindness in that smile.

"Too late."

Kael's stomach twisted.

He slowly reached into his pocket and pulled out the black ring.

Even in the darkness, the ring seemed strange.

It was made of dark metal, almost like obsidian.

Thin lines covered its surface, forming symbols Kael didn't recognize.

The leader's eyes gleamed when he saw it.

"Yep," he said.

"That's the one."

Kael stepped forward and held it out.

"Take it."

But none of them moved.

Instead, the leader tilted his head.

"You think this is about the ring?"

Kael frowned.

"What?"

The man's smile widened.

"You saw something you shouldn't have."

Kael's heart skipped.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

The man sighed.

"Kids these days."

Then he raised his hand.

The other two men stepped forward.

Crack.

One of them punched Kael in the stomach.

Pain exploded through his body.

The air left his lungs instantly.

Kael collapsed to his knees, gasping.

Another kick struck his side.

Then another.

And another.

The world spun.

Pain filled every inch of his body.

Kael curled up on the ground, trying to protect himself.

But the beating didn't stop.

"Thieves deserve punishment," one of them growled.

Kael's vision blurred.

Rain mixed with blood on the ground beneath him.

Through the pain, he still clutched the ring in his hand.

Lightning flashed again.

And for a moment…

The symbols on the ring glowed.

Faint.

Almost invisible.

But real.

Kael didn't notice.

But something else did.

Deep beneath the city…

Something ancient stirred.

Something that had slept for centuries.

Something that had been waiting.

Waiting…

For someone worthy.

Back in the alley, the leader crouched beside Kael.

The boy barely moved now.

"Pathetic," the man muttered.

He grabbed Kael's collar and lifted his head.

"Next time," he said quietly,

"don't steal things you don't understand."

Then he slammed Kael's head against the stone ground.

Darkness swallowed the world.

But just before Kael lost consciousness…

He felt something strange.

Warmth.

From the ring.

The symbols began to glow brighter.

The darkness around him moved.

Shadows stretched across the alley.

And for the first time in centuries…

They had found their master.

Darkness surrounded Kael.

For a moment, he thought he had died.

There was no pain.

No rain.

No sound.

Only endless darkness stretching in every direction.

His body felt strangely light, as if he were floating in an empty void.

"Where… am I?" Kael whispered.

His voice echoed strangely, fading into the darkness.

Then something moved.

At first, it was subtle.

Like ripples spreading across still water.

The darkness around him began to shift.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Kael's heart began to beat faster.

The shadows were moving.

Not randomly.

They were moving toward him.

From every direction.

They stretched like living creatures, twisting and crawling across the empty void.

Kael stepped back instinctively.

But there was nowhere to go.

The shadows surrounded him.

Yet strangely…

He didn't feel fear.

Instead, he felt something else.

A strange sense of familiarity.

As if the darkness recognized him.

Suddenly, a deep voice echoed through the void.

Ancient.

Cold.

Powerful.

"At last…"

Kael froze.

"Who said that?" he asked.

The shadows around him began swirling faster.

Then they gathered together in front of him, forming a massive shape.

A towering figure made entirely of darkness.

Its eyes burned like two distant stars.

For a moment, Kael couldn't breathe.

The presence of the figure was overwhelming.

It felt ancient.

Older than anything Kael had ever known.

"You have been chosen," the voice said.

Kael's mind struggled to understand.

"Chosen for what?"

The figure slowly raised one shadowy hand.

"For power."

The darkness around Kael surged.

Images flashed before his eyes.

Endless battlefields.

Kings kneeling.

Cities falling into shadow.

Armies made of darkness marching across the world.

Kael staggered back.

"What… is this?"

The voice spoke again.

"The power of the Shadow Sovereign."

Kael's heart pounded.

"Shadow… Sovereign?"

The figure nodded.

"For centuries, this power has waited."

"Waiting for a vessel strong enough to claim it."

The shadows around Kael moved closer.

"And now… it has chosen you."

Kael shook his head.

"No… you must be mistaken."

"I'm nobody."

"I'm just an orphan."

The figure's glowing eyes flickered.

"Power does not care about status."

"It only cares about potential."

The shadows began circling Kael faster.

"You have endured suffering."

"You have survived hatred."

"You have faced the cruelty of the world."

Kael clenched his fists.

Memories flooded his mind.

Hunger.

Beatings.

Lonely nights in abandoned buildings.

The constant struggle just to survive.

The voice continued.

"And yet… you did not break."

The shadows surged.

"That is why you are worthy."

The darkness suddenly rushed toward him.

Kael's eyes widened.

Before he could react, the shadows crashed into his body.

Pain exploded through every nerve.

"Aghhh!"

Kael screamed.

It felt like fire spreading through his veins.

Like thousands of needles piercing his skin.

The power was overwhelming.

Too much.

His body trembled violently.

"I can't… control it!"

The voice echoed again.

"You must."

"Or it will consume you."

The darkness inside Kael grew stronger.

It flooded his mind.

His senses sharpened.

He could feel every shadow around him.

Every corner of darkness.

Every flicker of light.

It was like the world had suddenly expanded.

"Focus," the voice commanded.

Kael struggled to breathe.

He clenched his fists.

Slowly…

The chaotic energy began to calm.

The shadows around him responded to his will.

They moved when he thought about moving them.

They shifted when he imagined them shifting.

A strange feeling spread through him.

Control.

The voice spoke again.

"The bond is complete."

The massive shadow figure began to fade.

Kael stepped forward.

"Wait!"

"I still have questions!"

But the figure was already dissolving back into darkness.

Before disappearing completely, it spoke one final sentence.

"Your journey begins now… Shadow Sovereign."

Then everything vanished.

Kael's eyes snapped open.

He was back in the alley.

Rain still poured from the sky.

His body lay on the cold stone ground.

The three men from the Iron Fang Guild still stood nearby.

One of them kicked him again.

"Still breathing?"

Another laughed.

"Tough little rat."

But something was different now.

Kael slowly opened his eyes.

The world looked different.

Sharper.

Clearer.

And darker.

Shadows stretched across the alley walls.

And somehow…

He could feel them.

The leader stepped forward.

"Alright, enough playing."

He pulled out a dagger.

"Let's finish this."

Kael slowly stood up.

His body should have been broken.

But instead…

He felt stronger.

The leader frowned.

"How are you standing?"

Kael looked at his hands.

Dark mist slowly curled around his fingers.

The shadows beneath his feet began to move.

Like living creatures responding to his thoughts.

The men noticed it too.

"What the hell…?"

Kael looked up.

His eyes glowed faintly in the darkness.

For the first time in his life…

Kael Draven smiled.

And the shadows answered.
