Chapter 5 – Training in the Shadows
The forest was quiet, but shadows moved like living things around Kai. He gripped the shadow spear tightly, feeling its weight and the power humming beneath his fingers.
The stranger watched silently, arms crossed. "Control isn't just about strength. It's about balance. One false step, and the shadows could turn on you."
Kai nodded. "I understand."
He focused, willing the shadows to move exactly as he imagined. Slowly, they formed into a spinning barrier around him. The air around the barrier hummed with energy.
"Good," the stranger said, nodding. "Now, push it further. Don't just control the shadows—become one with them."
Kai's red eyes glimmered as he raised his hand. The shadows surged forward, forming a large, jagged blade taller than himself. With a thought, it sliced through a tree nearby as if it were paper.
The stranger's eyes widened slightly. "Not bad. You're learning faster than I expected."
Kai smiled faintly. "I've had three years of being underestimated. That's enough motivation."
The stranger chuckled softly. "Good. But training alone won't be enough. You'll need to learn how to fight opponents who aren't as weak as those assassins. Soon, you'll meet someone far stronger."
Kai's expression hardened. "Then I'll be ready. I have no intention of losing again."
The shadows around him shivered, responding to his determination. The system chimed in:
[Quest Update: Shadow Energy – Stage 2]
[Objective: Form a weapon and defeat 5 moving targets.]
[Reward: +10 Strength, +10 Magic]
Kai's lips curved into a determined smile. "Five targets? Let's see what this system really has."
From the shadows, dark shapes emerged. They moved like living things, darting toward him with speed and precision.
Kai adjusted his stance, shadow spear in hand. Each target came at him one by one, and he moved faster than he ever had. The shadows obeyed his will perfectly, striking, blocking, and forming barriers.
By the end of the exercise, all five targets lay shattered on the ground. The forest was quiet again, except for the faint humming of the shadow energy around him.
The stranger nodded approvingly. "Stage 2 complete. You're stronger than most first-year academy students, even though you were expelled."
Kai flexed his fingers, feeling the pulse of power. "Good. This… this is only the beginning."
The stranger's eyes gleamed. "Exactly. The world outside the academy is ruthless. And now, you're awake. The Hidden Demon King walks again."
