The car was black and very expensive. Inside, it smelled like leather and Lorenzo's cold cologne. Amara sat in the back seat, her heart still racing. Lorenzo sat right next to her. He did not say a word. He just watched her in the dark.


Amara looked out the window. She saw the city lights fade away. Soon, they were driving up a long, private road with tall trees.


They stopped in front of a massive house. It was a mansion made of gray stone. It looked like a castle, but to Amara, it felt like a prison.


"Get out," Lorenzo said. His voice was calm but firm.


A guard opened the door. Amara stepped out into the cold night air. Lorenzo walked beside her. He did not grab her, but he stayed very close. He wanted her to know she could not run.


They walked inside. The floors were shiny marble. There were gold frames on the walls and giant crystal lights hanging from the ceiling. It was the most beautiful place Amara had ever seen, yet she felt a chill.


"This is your home now," Lorenzo said, his voice echoing in the large hall.


Amara turned to him. Her voice shook. "For how long? When can I go back to my life?"


Lorenzo stepped toward her. He was much taller than her. He reached out and tucked a wet piece of hair behind her ear. His touch was warm, but his eyes were dark and steady.


"You don't have a life anymore, Amara," he whispered. "The girl who walked into that alley is gone. The girl standing here belongs to me."


He looked at a maid standing nearby. "Take her to the gold room. Give her clean clothes. Make sure she eats."


"Yes, Mr. De Luca," the maid said quickly. She did not look Amara in the eye.


Lorenzo looked at Amara one last time. "Do not try to leave, Amara. The gates are locked. And my men are everywhere. They are trained to catch anything that tries to fly away."


He turned and walked away into the shadows of the big house. Amara was alone in a beautiful cage. She was safe from the rain, but she was trapped with a king who had a sinful obsession.
