Chapter 16 - Episode 16 - Friction Lines

Scene — Morning, Campus Garden

The morning unfolds slowly. Dew clings to the edges of the benches, leaves shimmer under soft light, and the air hums faintly with distant chatter from the nearby courtyard.

Airi sits beneath the old maple tree, sketchbook open on her lap. The faint scratch of her pencil fills the quiet.

Her lines are soft, deliberate — tracing half-drawn faces, half-finished moments.

Knight approaches from the path, his footsteps hesitant. He stops a few feet away, hands in his pockets, watching her sketch in silence.

She notices him — doesn't flinch, doesn't look away. Just says quietly, "You're up early."

"Couldn't sleep," Knight answers. "Guess I had... things to think about."

Airi closes her sketchbook, resting it on her knees. "Things like what?"

He looks down at the gravel, then back at her. "Like how I'm good at messing up."

There's no sarcasm in his tone — only exhaustion, softened by honesty.

Airi studies him for a moment, then gestures at the bench beside her.

He sits, the space between them wide at first — careful.

"You didn't mess up," she says finally. "You just didn't listen."

Knight nods. "I know. I saw what I wanted to see. Didn't ask. Didn't trust."

Her gaze drifts toward the sunlight filtering through the leaves. "It's easier to get angry than to stay quiet."

"Yeah," Knight murmurs, a faint smile flickering. "But silence hurts more when it's the wrong kind."

Airi glances at him then — a small, genuine look that softens the air between them.

They don't rush it. The conversation lingers like the morning light — steady, patient, healing in small ways.

Scene — Hallway, Late Morning

The hallway buzzes with life — shoes squeaking, laughter echoing off walls, lockers slamming shut.

Amid the noise, Knight and Airi walk side by side, slower than the crowd.

Airi carries her sketchbook close to her chest. "You really think we can go back to normal?"

Knight looks ahead. "No. But maybe something better."

She stops walking. He turns.

"Better?" she asks softly.

"Yeah," he says. "Something that's honest. Doesn't need fixing every time one of us messes up."

For a long second, the noise around them fades — just the two of them, standing still in the chaos.

Then Airi smiles faintly, the kind of smile that reaches her eyes. "You've changed."

Knight chuckles. "You're not the first to say that lately."

"Then maybe it's true," she says, stepping forward again.

They walk together until the crowd swallows them, their voices blending with the sound of lockers and laughter — the rhythm of ordinary life returning.

Scene — Gym, Afternoon Practice

The gym hums with the thud of basketballs and the squeak of sneakers.

Maxwell stands near the sideline, watching Knight's movements carefully — sharper, more deliberate, but lighter somehow.

Hunter notices it too. "Guess someone got his head straight."

Maxwell smirks. "Looks like it."

Knight calls out a play, his voice steady. The team responds in rhythm — the passes tight, the spacing clean.

For the first time in a while, everything clicks.

Coach Rintaro claps once. "That's what I want to see. Keep it!"

Airi watches from the stands, quiet but smiling.

The tension that once shadowed every game feels lighter now — not gone, but softened by something real.

Maxwell glances toward her briefly, reading the unspoken exchange between her and Knight.

He doesn't say anything. Just nods to himself and returns his focus to the court.

Scene — Cafeteria Balcony, Evening

The light is low, the sky painted in pale orange.

Knight leans on the railing, holding a cup of warm tea. Airi stands beside him, both silent for a while.

"Funny," he says eventually, "I used to think saying sorry fixed everything."

Airi smiles faintly. "It doesn't. But it's a start."

He nods, looking out toward the fading horizon. "Then I'll keep starting until it sticks."

She turns to him, eyes soft. "You don't have to try that hard anymore."

Knight glances at her, the corner of his mouth lifting. "Guess I just needed someone to tell me that."

The silence that follows isn't heavy — it's gentle. The kind that carries warmth instead of distance.

Below, laughter drifts up from the courtyard. Someone dribbles a basketball.

The rhythm of life continues — unhurried, alive.

Scene — Rooftop, Night

The city lights flicker below, soft and golden. The stars peek through faint clouds above.

Knight and Airi sit side by side near the railing. Between them, a small speaker hums quietly with music — a mellow, wordless tune.

Airi hums along under her breath. Knight listens, head tilted back toward the sky.

After a moment, he says softly, "You think silence can mean peace again?"

She looks at him, then at the city lights stretching far beyond. "It already does."

Their words fade into the night.

And for the first time in a long while — the silence feels whole.
