Chapter 17 - Shadows in the Empire

The morning light of the Levicious Empire spilled over the inner palace, illuminating its ornate courtyards, winding corridors, and serene gardens. Yet, despite the calm, a sense of tension lingered like a thin mist. The attempted assassination from the previous night had set a ripple across the palace, leaving everyone on edge.

Inside Prince Kyle Gray's new residence, activity had already begun. Servants moved quickly and silently, preparing breakfast and arranging Kyle's belongings. The prince, however, was not interested in food. He sat cross-legged on the balcony, staring out at the garden below.

Joshua Violet, always the meticulous one, followed closely, holding a notebook and a cup of tea. "Your Highness… you should eat something. You'll need energy for today."

Kyle waved a hand dismissively. "I survived last night, didn't I? That's enough energy."

Joshua raised an eyebrow. "Barely, Your Highness. You should not underestimate the Shadow Court."

Kyle smirked. "I don't underestimate anyone. I improvise." His eyes drifted toward the distant palace walls, where elite guards patrolled the perimeter. "Besides, I've got Luis and Marcus. That's more than enough."

Luis Stark, standing silently behind Kyle with arms crossed, gave a subtle nod. His violet eyes remained sharp, surveying every corner of the inner palace. "Do not let your guard down," he said quietly. "The assassins were not the only ones involved."

Kyle tilted his head. "What do you mean?"

Marcus, leaning against the balcony railing, chimed in. "The Shadow Court rarely acts alone. Someone orchestrates their contracts, and someone powerful wants you dead."

Kyle sighed. "Wonderful. So I'm caught between assassins, shadowy masterminds, and my own royal family. Life's simple, right?"

Joshua blinked. "It's… complicated."

"Understatement of the year," Kyle muttered.

---

By midday, Kyle had been escorted to the inner palace's central training arena. It was massive—an open hall surrounded by arched windows that let sunlight spill onto polished marble floors. Weapons hung neatly along the walls, and a small garden could be seen through one side of the hall.

Kyle stretched, feeling the stiffness from the previous day's events. "Luis, what's the plan for today? Training again?"

Luis's voice was calm but commanding. "You will train. You survived an assassination, but that does not mean you are ready. The Shadow Court will return."

Marcus stepped forward. "I can teach you some techniques they use. Their movements, how they strike, how they manipulate shadows." His eyes flickered with a mixture of regret and determination. "It won't make you invincible, but it will give you an edge."

Kyle grinned. "Finally, someone speaks my language." He swung his wooden training sword casually. "Show me what I need to know."

Joshua, sitting on a bench nearby, scribbled furiously in his notebook. "I'm recording everything," he whispered. "For reference, of course."

Luis narrowed his eyes. "We will start with basic forms first. Defensive positioning, footwork, and blocking. You are still too reckless."

Kyle groaned. "I'm reckless by design. But fine, basics first."

---

Hours passed as Kyle practiced relentlessly. Luis corrected his stance, Marcus demonstrated swift counterattacks, and Joshua took detailed notes of every movement. Kyle's arms ached, his legs trembled, and sweat poured down his face. Yet, for the first time, he felt a strange satisfaction—the thrill of becoming someone capable of surviving in a world that had always underestimated him.

During a brief break, Kyle leaned against the wall, gulping down water. "You know… I think I might actually enjoy this."

Luis gave him a sharp look. "Do not mistake this for a game."

Kyle grinned. "Oh, it's not a game. It's survival with style."

Marcus smirked slightly. "Style will not protect you against the Shadow Court."

Kyle shrugged. "I'll worry about style later. Right now, I'm worried about staying alive."

Joshua glanced toward the large windows. "Your Highness… someone is approaching."

Kyle and Luis turned instantly. Outside the arena, two palace guards were escorting a young woman wearing a simple yet elegant robe. Her hair was long and black, flowing freely, and her deep green eyes held a sharp intelligence.

Luis's expression tightened slightly. "Who is she?"

The woman bowed respectfully. "Your Highness, my name is Selene Veyra. I am a royal adviser sent by the Emperor. He requested that I assist you during your stay in the inner palace."

Kyle blinked. "Assist me? What kind of assistance are we talking about here?"

Selene's gaze was steady. "Strategic guidance, knowledge of palace affairs, and… protection. The Shadow Court is not the only threat you will face."

Kyle raised an eyebrow. "Not the only threat? That's a bit concerning."

Luis's hand rested on his sword. "She speaks the truth. The inner palace is safe from outside assassins, but dangers also exist within these walls. Not all enemies wield swords."

Marcus's eyes narrowed. "Intriguing. A palace adviser involved in internal security. She could be a valuable ally—or a spy."

Selene's gaze flickered to Marcus. "I am loyal to the Emperor. My only interest is the safety of Prince Kyle Gray."

Kyle leaned back, folding his arms. "Well, welcome aboard, I guess. Let's see if you live up to the hype."

Joshua whispered to Kyle: "I think she's serious, Your Highness."

Kyle grinned. "So am I. But let's not scare her away on the first day."

---

The afternoon passed in strategic discussions and simulations. Selene demonstrated maps of the palace, detailing secret passages, guard rotations, and possible infiltration points. Kyle listened intently, asking sharp questions and analyzing every detail.

By the time evening fell, the inner palace had quieted. Lanterns glowed softly along the corridors, and shadows stretched across the floors. Kyle, Joshua, Luis, and Marcus gathered in the main hall for a final review of the day's lessons.

Selene spoke quietly. "The Shadow Court will not attack immediately. They are patient. They study their targets. But you must anticipate them—they will use deception, fear, and distraction."

Kyle nodded. "Good to know. I've survived once. I can survive again."

Marcus frowned slightly. "Once is luck. Twice is skill."

Luis's eyes flickered toward Kyle. "You will need both."

Joshua shivered. "Your Highness… the evening is so quiet… too quiet…"

Kyle looked around, sensing the same unease. "I've learned that quiet usually means trouble."

Selene studied Kyle carefully. "You are aware that the Shadow Court is not the only threat. Some within the palace may wish to see you fail."

Kyle laughed softly. "Then I guess I'll have to keep my friends close—and my enemies guessing."

Luis's hand rested on his sword. "Stay alert. Do not underestimate anyone."

Marcus added, "Especially those who smile at you."

Kyle's grin widened. "Noted."

---

Night deepened over the Levicious Empire. The palace guards patrolled silently, the inner courtyard illuminated by moonlight. Kyle sat in his new study, reviewing notes from Selene and Joshua. Maps, diagrams, and strategies covered the table. Every detail about the palace's layout and defense had been memorized—or at least as much as one could memorize in a single day.

Luis and Marcus stood nearby, silent and vigilant.

Joshua occasionally flipped pages, murmuring observations.

Selene watched the prince, her expression unreadable. "Do you feel ready, Your Highness?"

Kyle leaned back in his chair, rubbing his temples. "Ready? Maybe not. Confident? Absolutely."

Selene raised an eyebrow. "Confidence without skill can be dangerous."

Kyle smirked. "Then I'll make sure to have both."

A sudden noise outside the window drew everyone's attention. A shadow flickered across the courtyard.

Luis's hand instinctively went to his sword. Marcus's eyes narrowed.

Kyle stood up slowly, his expression calm but alert. "Here we go again."

Joshua whispered, "Do you think it's them?"

Kyle shook his head. "Not yet. But it's coming."

Selene's gaze turned sharp. "The Shadow Court does not act alone. They have allies… some closer than you realize."

Kyle tilted his head. "Closer?"

Selene's voice dropped. "Within the palace. Watch everyone."

Luis's jaw tightened. "Internal threats are as dangerous as external ones."

Marcus muttered, "Then this is going to be far more complicated than I expected."

Kyle grinned, running a hand through his hair. "Excellent. I was getting bored."

Joshua whispered nervously, "Your Highness… I think tonight we truly begin surviving."

Kyle's eyes gleamed with determination. "Then let's begin."

---

Far beyond the inner palace, in the deepest forests of the empire, the Shadow Court's leader watched silently from a hidden perch. His black robes blended with the darkness, and his red eyes glowed with malice. He spoke softly to the gathered assassins.

"The prince is in the inner palace," he said. "He grows stronger. But patience… patience is our greatest weapon. Soon, we will strike—not with shadows alone, but with the empire itself."

The assassins bowed deeply. The air around them shimmered with dark energy.

And in the heart of the empire, Prince Kyle Gray, unaware of the true scale of his enemies, prepared for the trials that would shape him—not just as a prince, but as a survivor.

The night had only just begun.
