Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: Professor Zhang

The university was a relic from another era.

Nestled in the heart of the Middle Zone, it had survived the wars and the collapse that had reshaped Norn Ruins. Its buildings were old but well-maintained, ivy climbing up brick walls that had stood for over a century.

Lin Shen walked through the gates for the first time in three years. He'd been a student here once, studying philosophy and psychology under Professor Zhang Mingyuan. The same professor who was now waiting for him in his office.

The corridors were quiet. Most students were in class, their voices a distant murmur behind closed doors. Lin Shen's footsteps echoed on the worn tile floors as he made his way to the psychology department.

Professor Zhang's office was on the third floor, at the end of a hallway lined with portraits of former department heads. The door was slightly ajar, and Lin Shen could see the old man inside, bent over a stack of papers.

He knocked.

"Come in." Professor Zhang looked up, his graying hair catching the light from the window. His eyes narrowed slightly as he recognized Lin Shen. "Ah, Lin Shen. It's been a while."

"Three years, Professor."

"Three years." The old man gestured to a chair. "Sit. We have much to discuss."

Lin Shen sat. The office was exactly as he remembered it—cluttered with books and papers, the smell of old paper and tea, a small window overlooking the campus courtyard.

"Old Zhou told me you've awakened," Professor Zhang said without preamble. "He said your abilities are developing rapidly."

Lin Shen nodded. "I didn't expect any of this. My grandfather never told me—"

"He wouldn't have. Lin Weiyuan was a cautious man. He believed that some knowledge should only be passed on when the time was right."

Professor Zhang stood and walked to a cabinet against the wall. He unlocked it with a key from around his neck and pulled out a folder thick with documents.

"Your grandfather and I were colleagues for many years. We worked together on understanding the Consciousness Matrix, the Dream Matrix, and the connection between them."

He placed the folder on the desk in front of Lin Shen.

"These are our research notes. Everything we discovered, everything we theorized. Your grandfather wanted you to have them when you were ready."

Lin Shen opened the folder. The pages were filled with diagrams, equations, and handwritten notes. Some of it he recognized—psychological theories, philosophical concepts. But much of it was beyond his current understanding.

"There's something else," Professor Zhang said. "Something I've been working on since your grandfather died."

He reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a small device. It looked like a modified smartphone, but with additional components that Lin Shen couldn't identify.

"This is a consciousness probe. An improved version of the one Old Zhou showed you. It can detect shadow archetypes, measure consciousness energy fluctuations, and even provide limited protection against mental intrusion."

He handed it to Lin Shen.

"I developed it with your grandfather. We knew that Atlas would eventually make their move, and we wanted to give the next generation of awakeners every advantage we could."

Lin Shen turned the device over in his hands. It was lighter than it looked, and warm to the touch.

"Thank you, Professor."

"Don't thank me yet. There's something you need to understand about what you're up against."

Professor Zhang sat back down, his expression grave.

"Atlas isn't just a corporation. It's an ideology. They believe that human consciousness is too dangerous to be left uncontrolled—that without guidance, the collective unconscious will destroy itself."

"And you disagree?"

"I believe that consciousness, like any natural force, can be both destructive and creative. The answer isn't control—it's balance. Harmony between individual freedom and collective responsibility."

He leaned forward.

"Your grandfather understood this better than anyone. He believed that the key to balance lies in the heart—not the physical organ, but the philosophical concept. The seat of moral intuition, of conscience."

"Heart is principle," Lin Shen murmured.

"Exactly. Wang Yangming's philosophy, adapted for a new era. The unity of knowledge and action. The belief that true understanding comes not from abstract theory, but from lived experience."

Professor Zhang stood and walked to the window.

"Atlas has forgotten this. They've become so focused on control that they've lost sight of what they're trying to protect. They've become the very thing they feared—a force that threatens to destroy the balance they claim to preserve."

He turned back to Lin Shen.

"That's why you're so important. You represent a different path. A way forward that doesn't require sacrificing freedom for security."

Lin Shen felt the weight of the professor's words. It was a lot to take in.

"How do I do that? I'm just one person."

"You're not alone. There are others—awakeners, researchers, ordinary people who believe in what you're fighting for. Together, you can make a difference."

Professor Zhang walked back to his desk and picked up a small envelope.

"This is an invitation. To a meeting of the Awakener Alliance. It's happening tonight, in a location I'll tell you when you're ready to leave."

He handed the envelope to Lin Shen.

"Inside, you'll find a code. Memorize it, then destroy the paper. The location is only given to those who know the code."

Lin Shen took the envelope. It felt like a key to another world.

"Thank you, Professor. For everything."

Professor Zhang smiled, and for a moment, he looked like the teacher Lin Shen remembered from his university days.

"Thank me by surviving, Lin Shen. Thank me by winning."

Lin Shen left the university with his mind racing. The folder of research notes, the consciousness probe, the invitation to the Alliance meeting—it was all happening so fast.

But beneath the confusion, there was something else.

A sense of purpose. A feeling that he was finally on the right path.

He touched the envelope in his pocket.

Tonight, he would meet the Awakener Alliance.

And everything would change.
