Chapter 1 - TOM LOSES A TOOTH

Tom Sawyer is a naughty, clever, and playful boy. Like most children, he dislikes the routine and discipline of school life. He especially hates going to school on Monday mornings because it means the weekend is over and the long week of study begins again. Because of this dislike, Tom often tries to find different excuses to avoid going to school. One Monday morning, he begins thinking of ways to stay at home by pretending to be sick.

At first, Tom thinks that he might pretend to have a stomach ache. He lies in bed and considers how he could show the symptoms of stomach trouble so that his aunt would believe him. However, after thinking about it for a while, he realizes that this excuse will not be very convincing. He fears that his aunt might not believe him and might still send him to school. Therefore, he decides to think of another illness that would seem more serious.

While thinking about another excuse, Tom remembers that one of his teeth is loose. For a moment, he thinks that the loose tooth might help him avoid school. But soon he remembers that if Aunt Polly finds out about the loose tooth, she will probably pull it out immediately. Tom knows that pulling out a tooth is painful, so he quickly gives up that idea. He then begins to think about some strange and mysterious disease whose name or symptoms he does not even know properly.

Suddenly, Tom remembers hearing a doctor talk about a disease in which the patient might have to stay in bed for several days and could even lose a finger. Although Tom does not clearly understand the disease, he decides to pretend that he is suffering from something similar. He then begins to act as if he is in great pain. He holds his sore toe and starts groaning softly, hoping that someone will notice his suffering.

Tom continues groaning and pretending to be seriously ill. His half-brother Sid, who is sleeping nearby, wakes up and notices Tom's strange behavior. When Sid sees Tom groaning and acting as if he is in terrible pain, he becomes frightened. Tom pretends that he is extremely sick and even behaves as if he might be dying. Sid becomes very scared and worried about Tom's condition.

Sid quickly runs to inform the other members of the family. Hearing this alarming news, the family members become anxious and rush to see what has happened to Tom. They believe that he might be seriously ill. Tom continues his acting and groaning, hoping that everyone will believe his story and allow him to stay at home instead of going to school.

However, Aunt Polly is not easily fooled. She has known Tom for a long time and is aware of his mischievous nature. After observing him carefully, she begins to suspect that Tom is pretending. Eventually, she understands that Tom is not really suffering from any serious illness and that he is trying to trick them in order to avoid school.

When his plan fails, Tom finally mentions that he has a toothache. Aunt Polly decides that the best solution is to pull out the loose tooth. She takes a silk thread and skillfully ties it to the tooth. With a quick pull, she removes the loose tooth from Tom's mouth.

Although Tom feels some pain for a moment, the tooth is successfully removed. Afterward, a gap appears between his teeth. Surprisingly, Tom soon feels happy about this because the gap allows him to whistle and smile in a new and interesting way. He even feels proud of his new appearance.

This incident clearly shows Tom's mischievous character and his clever imagination. He tries many tricks and excuses to avoid school, but in the end, his plan does not succeed. Instead of escaping school, he ends up losing his loose tooth. Through this humorous episode, the author beautifully portrays the playful nature, imagination, and innocence of childhood.
