Chapter 6 - Chapter 6 — The Uncle

The door opened slowly.

For a moment, no one in the hallway moved.

The dim light from the private lounge spilled into the corridor, stretching across the polished floor.

Every pair of eyes focused on the doorway.

Ethan stood rigid in front of it, his expression still hard with anger.

Behind him, his friends waited in tense silence.

Then a figure stepped out.

The man emerged first.

Calm.

Unhurried.

As if the entire hallway full of people watching him meant absolutely nothing.

He adjusted the sleeve of his dark jacket with quiet precision before lifting his gaze.

The moment Ethan saw him clearly, something inside him shifted.

The anger on his face vanished almost instantly.

Replaced by something else.

Something far more restrained.

Stephanie stepped out of the room a moment later.

She had been standing just behind him, but when she looked up and saw the group in the hallway, she realised everyone was staring.

At them.

Her eyes moved from face to face until they landed on Ethan.

But Ethan wasn't looking at her.

His attention was completely fixed on the man beside her.

The change in Ethan's posture was subtle but unmistakable.

His shoulders straightened slightly.

The fury that had been burning in his eyes moments ago was gone.

In its place was something closer to caution.

Stephanie noticed it immediately.

It was the first time she had ever seen Ethan look like this.

Careful.

Almost… nervous.

Ethan took a small step forward.

"Uncle."

His voice was noticeably calmer than before.

Respectful.

Behind him, the group exchanged quick glances.

Stephanie blinked.

Uncle?

The word echoed in her mind.

Her gaze shifted slowly toward the man standing beside her.

Suddenly, the earlier conversation from the table replayed in her head.

Does she even know who she picked?

No chance.

If she knew, she wouldn't have walked up to him like that.

A quiet realisation settled over her.

She looked back at Ethan.

Then at the man again.

This was the person Ethan was always careful around.

The one his friends mentioned occasionally in hushed tones.

The one Ethan never joked about.

Ethan's uncle.

Stephanie felt a small wave of shock ripple through her.

She had just walked across an entire club and challenged him in front of everyone.

Without knowing who he was.

The man—Declan—studied Ethan calmly.

His expression gave nothing away.

But his gaze was sharp.

Observant.

He didn't immediately respond to Ethan's greeting.

Instead, his eyes moved briefly over the group gathered in the hallway.

Ethan's friends shifted slightly under that look.

Even the girls who had been whispering earlier fell silent.

Declan's attention returned to Ethan.

"You seem upset."

His tone was calm.

Not accusing.

But the weight behind the words was unmistakable.

Ethan straightened slightly.

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

Declan raised an eyebrow.

"No?"

Ethan hesitated.

The guards remained silent beside the door.

Stephanie stood quietly, watching the exchange unfold.

The atmosphere in the hallway had completely changed.

Just minutes ago, Ethan had stormed down here full of anger.

Now he looked… restrained.

Careful with every word.

Declan's gaze flicked briefly toward the guards before returning to Ethan.

"You attempted to enter the room."

It wasn't phrased as a question.

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"I was checking on her."

Declan glanced sideways.

For the first time since stepping out of the room, his eyes moved toward Stephanie.

She suddenly felt very aware of his presence beside her.

Then he looked back at Ethan again.

"Checking."

The word sounded almost thoughtful.

Ethan nodded slightly.

"Yes."

Declan studied him for a moment.

Then he asked calmly,

"Do you know what you did wrong tonight?"

The question caught Ethan completely off guard.

His brows furrowed slightly.

"What?"

Declan didn't raise his voice.

He didn't need to.

The quiet authority in his tone filled the hallway effortlessly.

"Do you know what you did wrong?"

Ethan opened his mouth slightly.

Then closed it again.

Behind him, his friends exchanged uneasy looks.

None of them dared interrupt.

Because everyone understood something important.

This was no longer about a stupid dare.

Declan waited patiently.

Stephanie watched Ethan closely.

She had known him for two years.

But she had never seen him struggle to answer a question before.

Finally, Ethan spoke.

"I didn't do anything wrong."

Declan's expression didn't change.

But the silence that followed felt heavier.

He tilted his head slightly.

"No?"

Ethan hesitated again.

"You're the one who—"

He stopped himself.

The hallway went quiet.

Declan's gaze sharpened slightly.

"Go on."

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"You're the one who accepted the dare."

One of the guys behind him shifted uncomfortably.

Another muttered quietly,

"He's not wrong…"

Declan's attention flicked briefly toward the group.

The whispering stopped instantly.

Then he looked back at Ethan.

"Yes," he said calmly.

"I accepted the dare."

He took a slow step forward.

Not threatening.

Just enough to close the distance between them slightly.

"But that is not the mistake I'm referring to."

Ethan frowned.

"Then what is?"

Declan's eyes moved briefly toward Stephanie again.

Then back to his nephew.

"You allowed your girlfriend to be humiliated in front of your friends."

The words landed like a stone in water.

Silence spread through the hallway.

Ethan stiffened.

"That's not what happened."

Declan raised an eyebrow slightly.

"No?"

Ethan gestured toward the club.

"It was just a game."

The same words Stephanie had used earlier.

Declan studied him quietly.

Then he asked another question.

"When the dare was given… did you stand up?"

Ethan didn't answer.

"Did you stop them?"

Still silence.

"Did you make it clear that she should not be treated like part of their entertainment?"

Ethan's jaw clenched.

Behind him, the group shifted uncomfortably.

Declan's voice remained calm.

"You didn't."

The words were simple.

But final.

Stephanie felt something stir in her chest.

Because she realised something strange.

Declan wasn't angry because Ethan had tried to enter the room.

He was angry about something else entirely.

About what happened before.

Ethan finally spoke again.

"It was just the dare."

Declan looked at him steadily.

"Yes."

Then he glanced briefly toward Stephanie.

"And yet she had to cross an entire room to find someone willing to stand beside her."

Ethan went silent.

The hallway felt colder somehow.

No one dared speak.

Declan finally stepped back slightly.

The tension eased just enough for people to breathe again.

Then his eyes moved to Stephanie once more.

For a brief second, their gazes met.

Something unreadable passed through his expression.

Then he looked back at Ethan.

"You should think carefully about your actions."

His voice was calm again.

Controlled.

But the message was clear.

The lesson had been delivered.

And Ethan had no answer for it.
