Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 Safe

The first thing Raven noticed when she woke was the silence.

For a few seconds she didn't move.

Her eyes remained closed as she listened carefully to the unfamiliar quiet surrounding her. No distant screams. No crashing bodies. No scent of smoke or blood thick in the air.

Just stillness.

Soft morning light filtered through the tall windows beside the bed, warming the room with golden sunlight.

It took a moment for memory to return.

Nightfall.

Raven opened her eyes slowly.

The ceiling above her stretched far higher than any room she had ever slept in before. Thick wooden beams crossed overhead while soft lighting fixtures hung between them, casting a warm glow across the polished floors.

She sat up slowly.

The bed beneath her was enormous—large enough for three people comfortably. A thick woven blanket had been draped over her during the night, and a small side table held a glass of water and a folded cloth.

Nightfall hospitality.

Even the air smelled different here.

Cleaner.

Calmer.

Raven swung her legs over the side of the bed and stood.

Her muscles protested slightly, but nothing hurt the way she expected after everything they had been through.

Nightfall healers must have checked on them while they slept.

A knock sounded softly at the door.

"Come in," Raven said.

The door opened and Mira stepped inside.

"You're awake."

Raven gave a small nod.

"What time is it?"

"Late morning."

Raven blinked.

"I slept that long?"

"You collapsed the moment Marcus showed us the guest lodge," Mira replied. "I'm honestly impressed you even made it to the bed."

Raven rubbed her neck.

"That sounds about right."

Mira glanced around the room with quiet appreciation.

"I still can't believe how large these buildings are."

Raven followed her gaze.

Silverfang's lodge had been beautiful in its own way—handcrafted wood and warm fires—but Nightfall was something else entirely.

This place had been built over centuries.

Maybe longer.

"Where is everyone?" Raven asked.

"Jarek's in the medical lodge," Mira said.

Raven straightened instantly.

"Is he okay?"

"He'll live," Mira replied with a faint smile. "Apparently Nightfall healers are very good at what they do."

That didn't surprise Raven.

"And Tomas?"

Mira hesitated slightly.

"He's outside."

"He hasn't slept, has he?"

Mira shook her head.

"No."

Raven sighed quietly.

That sounded like Tomas.

Silverfang had been his life.

Now it was gone.

"Let's go find him."

The moment they stepped outside, Raven realized just how massive Nightfall truly was.

The settlement stretched across the valley in every direction.

Buildings stood between towering pine trees, their structures blending ancient materials with modern design. Some lodges looked traditional—massive timber frames with stone foundations and wide porches.

Others were sleek.

Glass walls.

Metal railings.

Solar panels glimmering across rooftops.

Wolves moved everywhere.

Some carried equipment between buildings.

Others trained in open fields.

A few walked casually along the stone paths talking quietly.

But even in casual movement there was something Raven noticed immediately.

Order.

Nightfall wolves moved with quiet discipline.

Everything had purpose.

Silverfang had always felt like a family.

Nightfall felt like a kingdom.

"Hard to believe wolves live like this," Mira murmured.

Raven nodded.

"I feel like we stepped into another world."

They continued walking until they spotted Tomas near the edge of the forest.

He stood facing the mountains, his broad shoulders rigid.

"Tomas?" Raven called gently.

He turned.

When he saw her, his expression softened slightly.

"Raven."

"You should be resting."

"So should you."

"I slept."

"That's good."

They stood quietly together for a moment.

Raven finally asked the question that had been weighing on her since she woke.

"Do you think anyone else survived?"

Tomas didn't answer immediately.

The wind rustled through the tall trees.

Finally he shook his head.

"No."

Raven looked down.

She had known the answer.

But hearing it made it real.

Silverfang was truly gone.

High above the clearing, Marcel stood on the balcony outside the Alpha lodge.

His arms rested against the wooden railing as he watched the settlement below.

Darius stood beside him reviewing several reports from Nightfall patrols.

But Marcel's attention had drifted.

His gaze had settled on the small group near the forest edge.

Specifically—

On Raven.

She stood beside Tomas speaking quietly.

Even from a distance he could see the way sunlight touched her dark hair. Her figure was smaller than most of the warriors in Nightfall—slender but curvy, with strength evident in the way she held herself.

Five foot five.

Perhaps five six.

But compared to him…

Small.

Marcel's eyes narrowed slightly as he studied her.

There was something striking about her appearance.

Her skin carried a warm tan tone that hinted at mixed heritage. Her hair was thick and full, falling in dark waves around her shoulders.

Her features were strong.

Beautiful.

And completely unfamiliar.

A strange warmth stirred in his chest.

Then his wolf surged forward violently inside his mind.

Mine.

Marcel stiffened.

The word echoed through his instincts with alarming clarity.

His wolf clawed against the edges of his control, restless and agitated in a way Marcel had not felt in decades.

Mate.

Marcel frowned.

That wasn't possible.

Mate bonds were unmistakable.

Both wolves felt them.

Both reacted.

But Raven—

She showed no sign of it.

No tension.

No awareness.

She spoke calmly with Tomas, completely oblivious to the storm raging inside him.

Marcel forced a slow breath.

Control returned gradually.

Confusion lingered.

Darius noticed the shift beside him.

"You're staring again," the older wolf said calmly.

Marcel didn't respond immediately.

His gaze remained on Raven.

"She's interesting."

Darius followed his gaze.

"The Silverfang girl."

"Yes."

"She survived Ironclaw."

"That alone makes her notable."

Marcel remained silent.

His wolf growled quietly beneath his thoughts.

Mine.

But the girl below continued speaking with Tomas, completely unaware.

And that made absolutely no sense.

Back in the clearing, Raven suddenly felt something strange.

A faint pressure in the air.

Like someone watching her.

She turned instinctively.

Her eyes lifted toward the Alpha lodge.

Marcel stood on the balcony.

Even from across the settlement his size was obvious.

He looked enormous.

Broad shoulders.

Dark clothing.

A presence that seemed to dominate the space around him.

Raven felt that strange warmth again.

It settled deep in her chest.

Then slowly lower.

Her breath caught slightly.

Why did he make her feel like that?

Marcel noticed her looking.

Their eyes met.

For a moment the entire valley seemed to disappear.

Then Marcel gave a small nod.

Acknowledgment.

Nothing more.

He turned away.

Raven exhaled slowly.

Something about the Alpha of Nightfall made her heart beat faster.

And she had no idea why
