Success is measured by the Awakening, an eighteenth-birthday rite where citizens bond with a "Core Stone" to receive magical paths like healing or combat.

The story follows Kael Veyron, a young man living in the shadow of his father’s disgraced reputation. While the town views him with pity or suspicion, Kael has spent his life toughening himself through survival and manual labor. As his own Awakening approaches, he carries a mysterious, broken compass left by his father that points toward the Rift rather than North.
