Chapter 3 - The Watcher in the Forest

Not in any way a normal creature could perceive.

But if someone had been watching carefully—truly carefully—they might have noticed the shadows shifting in unnatural ways between the ancient trunks.

Golden eyes glowed faintly within that darkness.

Kaelith watched.

He had not gone far after leaving the basin.

The moment his body had vanished into the mist, he had circled back silently, slipping between the trees with the patience of an apex predator.

Now he perched high on the branch of a massive cedar tree nearly forty meters away from the clearing.

From this distance, the small feline figure below appeared fragile.

Ridiculously fragile.

The creature—Jonas—sat cross-legged on the forest floor beside the banyan tree, studying the glowing system screen floating in front of him with intense concentration.

Kaelith tilted his head slightly.

Strange.

Most creatures would have fled.

Even seasoned hunters would have retreated after realizing what Kaelith truly was.

Yet this small cat had climbed down from a tree and begun examining plants like a scholar wandering through a garden.

No fear.

No panic.

Just curiosity.

Kaelith's golden eyes narrowed thoughtfully.

And he touched me.

The memory resurfaced clearly.

Small furred hands pressing cool moss against wounds that even powerful cultivators would hesitate to approach.

The scent of herbs.

The faint tremor in the boy's fingers.

And yet he had continued.

Kaelith flexed his fingers slowly where he sat.

The wounds along his ribs had already begun regenerating. Normally the cursed miasma poisoning would have slowed that healing to a crawl.

But the moss poultices had drawn out the worst of the corruption.

The tiny amount of Silver-Heart Ginseng Jonas had fed him had also accelerated the process.

Kaelith glanced down at the faint bandage still wrapped around his torso.

A corner of his mouth twitched.

"…A foolish creature."

But the words lacked true mockery.

Below him, Jonas stretched his arms.

"Okay," the cat-boy muttered.

"Let's see what we're working with."

The system interface expanded.

Even from a distance Kaelith could sense the strange energy fluctuations around it. The structure was not spiritual power.

Not quite.

Something more… mechanical.

Kaelith frowned.

An artifact?

Jonas began reading aloud quietly.

"Status window."

Jonas scratched behind one ear.

"Still pretty pathetic," he said honestly.

"But better than yesterday."

He stood and began wandering around the clearing again.

Kaelith watched silently.

At first it looked random.

But gradually the serpent noticed something.

Jonas wasn't wandering.

He was studying.

The cat knelt beside plants, examining leaves carefully.

Sometimes he sniffed them.

Sometimes he gently brushed the stems.

Once he dug up a root and inspected its structure before burying it again.

Kaelith's brow furrowed.

He behaves like an herbalist.

That part was not particularly surprising.

But the next moment something more curious happened.

Jonas paused suddenly.

His ears twitched.

He turned his head toward a patch of ferns.

"Huh."

He walked toward them slowly.

"Are you… leaning?"

The plants shifted faintly in the breeze.

Or at least that was how it appeared.

But Kaelith sensed the subtle energy ripple.

Jonas' new skill.

The cat crouched.

"…You're pointing that way."

He looked deeper into the forest.

"There's something there, isn't there?"

Kaelith went perfectly still.

Even the wind seemed to pause.

Jonas stared into the trees for a long moment.

Then he shrugged.

"Probably just a rabbit."

He turned back to collecting herbs.

High in the cedar tree, Kaelith's lips curved faintly.

Interesting.

The ability allowed him to sense environmental tension through plants.

Primitive.

But useful.

An hour passed.

Jonas had gathered a small collection of herbs and arranged them neatly on a large flat rock.

Then he began experimenting.

Crushing.

Mixing.

Smelling.

Occasionally tasting the smallest possible amount before immediately spitting it out.

"Definitely poisonous," he coughed once.

Kaelith watched this entire process with silent fascination.

This small creature was not gathering herbs randomly.

He was conducting experiments.

Even stranger—

He hummed softly while working.

The tune was unfamiliar.

But strangely pleasant.

The forest seemed calmer around him.

Birds returned to nearby branches.

Small animals crept cautiously through the undergrowth again.

Kaelith had spent centuries moving through forests.

He knew how animals behaved around predators.

Normally when he was nearby the entire ecosystem froze in fear.

But Jonas…

Somehow softened that tension.

The serpent shifted slightly on his branch.

His injuries still ached faintly.

But they were healing quickly.

Much faster than they should have.

His golden eyes drifted back to the boy.

Jonas had begun building something now.

Using sticks and vines, he constructed a small triangular frame.

"A drying rack," Jonas murmured to himself.

"If the weather stays humid these herbs will rot before I can use them."

Kaelith blinked slowly.

He intends to stay here.

Not flee.

Not run toward civilization.

Remain.

In the forest.

Alone.

A quiet chuckle escaped Kaelith's throat.

"Crazy creature."

Later in the afternoon, Jonas sat beside the small stream again.

He dipped his hands in the cool water and sighed contentedly.

"Okay."

"Food."

His stomach growled loudly.

Jonas grimaced.

"Right."

"Food now."

He glanced around thoughtfully.

Then his ears perked up.

Nature's Whisper had activated again.

Nearby grass bent slightly toward the stream bank.

Jonas followed the direction carefully.

And then he spotted them.

Small burrowing animals.

Rodent-like creatures with long ears and soft gray fur.

Jonas' eyes brightened.

"Dinner."

He crouched behind a bush.

Carefully he planted two sharpened stakes coated in Lumina-Berry toxin.

Then he tossed a small root near the burrow entrance.

Moments later one of the animals emerged cautiously.

Sniff.

Step.

Sniff.

Step.

Then—

Snap.

The creature stumbled onto the poisoned stake.

It squealed weakly and collapsed seconds later.

Jonas blinked.

"…That worked way faster than expected."

He approached carefully.

The animal was already unconscious.

Jonas looked slightly guilty.

"Sorry."

"But I also enjoy being alive."

He carried the catch back to the clearing.

Kaelith watched everything.

Efficiency.

Planning.

Minimal wasted effort.

The boy truly had survival instincts.

For someone so weak physically.

Jonas eventually built a small fire.

The smell of roasted meat filled the air.

The scent reached Kaelith instantly.

His stomach tightened slightly.

He had not eaten properly since before the battle that nearly killed him.

But the serpent remained perfectly still.

He simply watched.

Jonas finished cooking and sat beside the fire.

The flames reflected softly in his golden-green eyes.

For a while he ate quietly.

Then he spoke.

"Okay System."

"You've been suspiciously quiet."

"Are you sulking because I saved the supposed villain?"

The interface flickered.

[SYSTEM RESPONSE]

Narrative probability has shifted.

Outcome variables increasing.

Monitoring continues.

Jonas leaned back against the tree trunk.

"Well that sounds ominous."

He gazed up at the forest canopy.

"You know…"

His voice softened.

"That guy didn't look like a villain."

Kaelith's eyes narrowed slightly.

Jonas poked the fire with a stick.

"He looked tired."

"…And lonely."

The words hung in the air.

High in the cedar tree, Kaelith did not move.

But something in his chest tightened unexpectedly.

Lonely.

It had been centuries since anyone had described him that way.

Most used words like monster.

Or calamity.

Or cursed serpent.

Jonas yawned.

"Well."

"Not my problem anymore."

He stretched.

"…Probably."

Kaelith almost laughed.

Little liar.

Jonas clearly cared.

He had risked his life to prove it.

The fire crackled quietly.

Night slowly settled over the forest.

Jonas eventually curled beside the tree roots.

His tail wrapped around himself like a blanket.

Within minutes his breathing deepened.

Sleep.

Kaelith watched him for a long time.

The forest grew silent.

Moonlight filtered between branches.

Finally, the serpent moved.

Soundlessly, Kaelith dropped from the cedar tree.

He landed without making a single sound.

The distance between them shrank to only a few meters.

Jonas slept peacefully.

Completely unaware.

Kaelith crouched beside him.

Up close, the cat looked even smaller.

Soft cream fur.

Slightly messy hair.

A faint herb scent clinging to his clothes.

Kaelith reached out slowly.

Then stopped just short of touching him.

"…Foolish creature," he murmured quietly.

"You should not trust monsters."

But Jonas only shifted slightly in his sleep.

His tail twitched.

Kaelith stared at him for another long moment.

Then he stood.

A faint shimmer of dark mist wrapped around his body.

The serpent stepped backward into the forest shadows.

Before leaving completely, he glanced once more toward the sleeping boy.

Golden eyes softened faintly.

"…I will watch for now."

And then he vanished into the darkness.

Unseen.

But not far.

Never far.
