Chapter 2 - recognition

The night was dim. Gotham City's neon lights were the only decoration of this sinful city, while a beam of light shone in the sky—the iconic Bat-Signal.

"I said, calm down. Do you really need to be this vigilant?"

Zatanna felt speechless. Ever since they left the house, Jin had remained extremely cautious, constantly worried that someone might suddenly appear and shoot him.

Zatanna herself was one of the strongest magicians in the world. To her, this level of caution felt unnecessary.

But Jin thought otherwise.

The horror of Gotham was already deeply ingrained in him.

"Zatanna, this is what you don't understand," Jin said. "I'm thinking about our safety. You may be a magician, but your body is still that of a normal human."

No matter how powerful Zatanna's magic was, her physical body was still fragile. Taking a bullet would affect her no differently than any ordinary person.

So Jin wasn't just thinking about himself—he was also thinking about his childhood sweetheart, Zatanna.

"Ah…" Zatanna sighed softly. What else could she say? She could only go along with him.

As they walked, the two eventually arrived at a park. They sat down on a bench and quietly enjoyed the rare sight of moonlight shining over Gotham's sky.

Zatanna was at that age where feelings easily blossomed. She couldn't help but steal glances at the boy sitting beside her.

Her fingers fidgeted nervously, gently rubbing against each other.

To be honest, she and Jin didn't actually have an official relationship.

Although they seemed very close, they had been like this since childhood.

But whenever things became a little too intimate—like kissing—she would immediately become shy, just like what had happened earlier in the apartment.

"Hoo…"

For the past two years, Zatanna had secretly made up her mind. After they reunited, she would confess her feelings to him and take their relationship a step further.

But thinking about it was much easier than actually doing it.

The moment she tried to say it, her heart began to race uncontrollably, and she felt extremely nervous.

"Jin…"

Zatanna had just gathered her courage to speak, her face slightly red.

But Jin suddenly turned his head.

"Zatanna, can you teach me magic?"

"…Ah."

All the emotions she had carefully built up were instantly shattered by Jin's completely oblivious response—like a bucket of cold water being poured over her head.

"Hmph!"

Smack!

As if venting her frustration, Zatanna slapped Jin lightly on the head.

"Ouch! What was that for, Zatanna?" Jin looked confused. If she didn't want to teach him, she could just say so—why hit him?

Of course, Jin wasn't entirely dense. If he had noticed Zatanna's conflicted expression earlier, he would have realized what the girl wanted to say.

"Jin… you're such a big idiot…"

Zatanna muttered softly with a blush.

Then she explained, "First of all, you need to have the right constitution to use magic. If you don't have that, even if I teach you, it won't work."

"It's okay. You can just try teaching me."

"This… alright."

After that, Zatanna began explaining the basics of magic to Jin.

Naturally, the magic she taught him was the same backward-speaking magic that she herself used.

After some time, Jin finally grasped the basics.

He mobilized a trace of magic within his body.

"Spell."

Whoosh!

Two small flames instantly appeared in Jin's palms.

The firelight reflected on his face, revealing his obvious excitement and joy.

"This…!" Zatanna's beautiful eyes widened in shock.

Jin might be the most talented person she had ever seen.

When she first learned backward magic, it had taken her several weeks just to grasp the basics.

But Jin had done it in less than two hours.

Zatanna immediately reached out and pinched Jin's face.

"Tell me honestly. Did you learn this before and just pretend so you could make me happy?"

"Of course not," Jin replied. "Today is my first time touching magic. I wouldn't lie to you about that."

Zatanna stared at him suspiciously for a while.

After observing him carefully, she finally confirmed that Jin wasn't lying.

"Then your talent is incredible," she said. "I've never met anyone who could learn magic in just over an hour."

"That's because you're a good teacher," Jin replied. "If someone else taught me, it might have taken me months."

Jin's flattery clearly worked.

Zatanna squinted proudly, crossed her arms, tilted her head slightly, and said with confidence,

"Of course. I'm Zatanna. You won't find a second magician like me in the entire world."

Jin chuckled softly.

A hint of affection flashed in his eyes as he slowly leaned closer to her.

Zatanna suddenly realized what was happening. Her face instantly turned red, and she leaned backward in embarrassment as Jin's face moved closer.

"W-What are you doing?"

"Zatanna… be my girlfriend."

For a moment, Zatanna's eyes widened.

Her mind went completely blank, leaving only the warmth spreading across her blushing face.

Jin smiled gently. How could he not understand the feelings of the girl in front of him? If he knew she liked him, how could he continue pretending not to notice?

"Mm…"

Zatanna suddenly threw her arms around him, burying her face deep in his chest.

Jin gently stroked her black hair and asked with a smile,

"So… is that a yes?"

"Mm… I'm… really happy…"

After saying that, Zatanna slowly lifted her head from Jin's arms.

She looked at the boy she loved with affectionate eyes.

Then she leaned forward and offered her kiss.

The moon above seemed to witness their love.

Its gentle light fell upon them, adding a quiet and beautiful glow to the moment.
