Chapter 3 - The Beginning of Something Quiet

Some people enter your life like a storm.

Loud. Sudden. Impossible to ignore.

But some people arrive quietly… like a soft melody you barely notice at first.

And yet, before you realize it, that melody becomes the song your heart remembers the most.

For Aarav, Meera was slowly becoming that melody.

It had only been a few days since their first meeting in the college corridor. Yet somehow, their paths kept crossing in the most unexpected ways.

The library.

The campus garden.

The cafeteria line.

Each meeting felt accidental, but after a while, it no longer felt like coincidence.

It felt like fate gently pushing them toward each other.

That afternoon, Aarav sat under a large tree near the edge of the campus garden. The soft sunlight filtered through the leaves, creating shifting patterns on the ground.

He had a book open in his hands, but he wasn't really reading.

His thoughts wandered.

For someone who usually enjoyed solitude, Aarav had been strangely distracted lately.

And deep down, he knew why.

Just as he sighed and leaned back against the tree trunk, a familiar voice interrupted his thoughts.

"You always look like you're thinking about something serious."

Aarav looked up.

Meera stood a few steps away, holding two cups of coffee.

Her hair moved slightly with the breeze, and the sunlight made her look almost unreal for a moment.

"Or maybe you're just pretending to read," she added playfully.

Aarav closed the book slowly.

"Maybe both."

Meera walked over and sat beside him on the grass.

She handed him one of the coffee cups.

"Peace offering," she said.

Aarav looked at the cup.

"You didn't have to do that."

"I know," she smiled.

"But I wanted to."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

They simply sat there, listening to the distant sounds of students chatting somewhere across the campus.

Then Meera broke the silence.

"So tell me something about you," she said.

Aarav raised an eyebrow.

"Why?"

"Because conversations work better when both people talk."

He thought about it for a moment.

"What do you want to know?"

Meera tilted her head thoughtfully.

"What kind of person are you?"

Aarav let out a small laugh.

"That's a big question."

"I like big questions," she replied.

He looked down at the coffee cup in his hands.

"I guess I'm just someone who prefers quiet things."

"Like books?"

"Yeah."

"And music?"

"Yes."

"And sitting alone under trees?" she teased.

Aarav smiled faintly.

"Exactly."

Meera watched him carefully.

"You know," she said softly, "people who like quiet things usually have very loud thoughts."

Her words surprised him.

Most people never noticed things like that about him.

But somehow… she did.

"What about you?" Aarav asked.

Meera looked up at the sky.

"I think I'm someone who believes in moments."

"Moments?"

"Yes," she said.

"The small ones."

She pointed toward the trees around them.

"Like the way the wind moves the leaves."

Or the way the sunset looks different every evening."

She paused before continuing.

"Or the moment when two strangers meet… and suddenly their lives change."

Aarav felt a strange warmth in his chest.

"You really think moments can change lives?"

Meera nodded slowly.

"They already have."

For a second, their eyes met.

Neither of them said anything.

But something unspoken passed between them.

A quiet understanding.

A fragile connection.

The sun slowly began to set, painting the sky with soft shades of orange and pink.

Students started leaving the campus, their laughter fading into the distance.

Meera stood up, brushing the grass from her dress.

"I should go," she said.

Aarav nodded.

But strangely, the idea of her leaving made the garden feel a little emptier.

Meera took a few steps away before turning back.

"You know something, Aarav?"

"What?"

"I'm glad we bumped into each other that day."

Aarav smiled slightly.

"Me too."

She smiled back.

And then she walked away, disappearing along the stone path that led toward the campus gate.

Aarav remained sitting under the tree.

The wind moved softly through the branches above him.

For the first time in a long time, his thoughts weren't heavy.

Instead, they were filled with a quiet hope.

A feeling he wasn't used to.

But life has a strange way of turning beautiful beginnings into complicated endings.

Because somewhere in the future…

The same memories that were making Aarav smile today would one day become the ones that hurt the most.

The story of Aarav and Meera was slowly unfolding.

And neither of them knew yet…

That the deeper their connection grew,

the harder it would be to say goodbye.
