Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Business Card From A Stranger

The phone lit up at nine a.m. Elena checked the screen before sitting up. Message from unknown number.

Meeting requested.

Tomorrow noon. Private restaurant downtown.

She stared at the words for ten seconds. Then typed one reply.

Terms first.

Three dots appeared instantly. Then stopped.

*Understood.*

She sent no more messages. Got dressed in the clothes she'd bought secondhand yesterday. Nothing fancy. Just clean. Black pants. White shirt. One pair of shoes that matched.

At eleven-thirty she walked into the restaurant. The place smelled like garlic butter and wine. Men in suits laughed at tables nearby. Women checked their phones while waiting for service. She ordered water. Nothing else.

A waiter brought bread rolls immediately. She didn't eat them. Just placed one on her napkin and watched it sit there.

The door opened behind her. Heavy footsteps approached slow and steady.

"Miss Carter."

She turned around without standing. Alexander stood behind her chair wearing a suit that cost more than most people's cars. His hair was perfect. Expression unreadable as always.

"You came," he said. Not a question.

"I have nothing better to do."

He pulled out the chair opposite her and sat down. The wood scraped against the floor softly. "We need to discuss your proposal."

"What proposal?"

"The one you mentioned at my office yesterday." He gestured to the waiter approaching the table.

"Waiter," Alexander said. "What is today's special?"

"Seafood risotto with truffle oil."

Alexander looked at the menu then at Elena. "You want anything?"

"No thanks."

"Then I'll take two risottos. Bring the cheapest wine." He handed the menu back without looking at prices.

Elena watched him closely. Most men here ordered expensive things just to impress people. He didn't care. That meant money wasn't his only motivation.

"What does your business card say about funding?" she asked directly.

"It says I can invest. But I don't know what you're building."

"Fashion brand. Starting fresh. Small budget big vision."

"That costs money."

"I'm aware of the math."

He leaned forward. Elbows on the table. Hands clasped together. "Tell me why I should help you when you've already lost half everything you owned."

"Because I won't lose again." Her voice stayed calm. "And because your company has problems coming. Problems only I know about."

His expression didn't change. But something shifted in his eyes. Interest sharpening. Curiosity rising. "What kind of problems?"

"The merger next quarter will fail. Market prediction wrong. Stock drops ten percent if nobody acts."

"How did you know that?"

"I told you. I remember things."

He nodded slowly. Thoughtful. "You could be making this up."

"Check the records yourself. You have access."

"I will check tomorrow." He reached into his pocket and pulled out his wallet. Took something out and slid it across the table.

Business card. Leather finish. Gold lettering. His name printed in bold letters.

"If we work together," he said quietly. "There's a catch."

"I heard about catches." She kept her hand away from the card. "State yours."

"You become part of my circle. That means visibility."

"So people know who I am now."

"More than before." He studied her face carefully. "People talk. Rumors spread fast. Are you ready for that?"

"Already living it."

He smiled faintly. "Good answer."

"But don't mistake me," Elena said firmly. "I don't need permission to build anything. I work alone unless I say otherwise."

"I noticed." He tapped his fingers once on the table. "Most women agree to whatever offers given. You refused basic support terms. Why?"

"Because I've done everything alone before. Will continue doing so."

He held her gaze longer than anyone had before. Something passed between them. Not friendship. Respect. Like seeing someone who understood the game because they'd lost everything trying to win it.

"What's your price?" she asked instead.

"Nothing right now." He paused. "Just time. Prove value over months. If results match claims, we discuss partnership properly."

"That sounds like mentorship."

"Exactly. Professional guidance until you prove independence."

"And if I accept?"

"Then call tomorrow morning at eight sharp."

"And if I refuse?"

"Then find someone else." He stood up. Picked up his coat off the chair beside him. "I'll send my assistant details for meetings."

She reached for the business card finally. Took it slowly. Turned it over in her hands. Felt the weight. Real thing.

"Thank you," she said without meaning it.

"Don't thank me yet. Wait until we see results."

He walked toward the exit without waiting. She watched him go. Head high shoulders straight. Every step confident. Power radiated from him even though he hadn't spoken much.

When he disappeared outside the door she exhaled. Slow breath through nose. Felt lighter somehow. Stronger.

The waiter returned with two trays of food steaming hot. Place one in front of her then looked at hers empty plate.

"I thought you weren't eating," he said.

"She changed her mind." Another waiter appeared suddenly from behind. Placed food in front of her. "Sir said pay separately. Add tip to total bill."

Elena frowned. "Why pay for us?"

"He doesn't know why either." The first waiter shrugged. "Just follow instructions."

She pushed the food slightly away but didn't touch it. Phone buzzed in her pocket. Unknown number again.

*Don't take the card.*

Same message from before. Same warning. Different tone this time. Urgent. Desperate.

She looked around quickly. Nobody watching except distant diners laughing at tables far away. The restaurant seemed normal despite this strange feeling creeping up her spine.

Her phone vibrated again. Same number. New message this time.

*I tried stopping him too late.*

*Who is this?*

No answer came. Only silence filled her ear after she hung up the call automatically.

She picked up the fork. Stabbed a piece of rice and ate slowly. Tasted expensive flavors filling her mouth. Didn't swallow immediately. Let it sit there testing strength against hunger.

Alexander had proposed mentorship officially. She refused gently explaining she worked alone. But something deeper existed beneath professional surface now. Something forming between them whether they admitted it or not.

Romance? Maybe. Partnership for sure. Danger certain.

The bill arrived on a small leather tray. Payment required immediate. She transferred amount from her account. Watched balance drop slightly lower. Didn't matter yet. Money came soon enough.

Before she stood up to leave, her phone buzzed one final time. Text appeared clearly on screen. Unknown number sending final message.

*Be careful. Some cards burn hands that hold them too tight.*

She stared at the words until tears formed near corners of eyes. Didn't wipe them away. Instead folded the business card closed inside her palm and slipped it deep into purse.

Walking outside into evening air felt cooler. City lights flickered on above. Traffic honked below. People rushing home after long days forgetting dreams sometimes. Elena remembered hers burning brighter every minute passing.

Somewhere ahead lay Alexander Sterling waiting for tomorrow meeting. Somewhere behind waited James Carter wondering why leaving her hurt worse staying. Both paths existed now. Both led somewhere new.

Both carried risks she accepted willingly.

Phone buzzed once more. Unknown number sent one final word before disappearing completely.

Wait.
