Chapter 19 - THE LEGACY OF THE WILL OF FIRE

Kakuzu narrowed his eyes, sizing up the Konoha ninja who had dared to interfere. "The Sarutobi clan? I've heard of you. Sarutobi Sasuke was once a name that shook the world before his clan joined the Leaf. It seems I can recover my lost hearts right here today."

Without another word, Kakuzu detached his hands, launching them like guided missiles toward Hiruzen Sarutobi. Hiruzen, gripping the Adamantine Staff, parried the flying hands with a powerful sweep. He immediately commanded the staff to extend, thrusting it toward Kakuzu's chest. Kakuzu flickered away, closing the distance to deliver a high kick toward Hiruzen's head. Hiruzen ducked, but Kakuzu's leg detached mid-swing, shifting from a kick to a heavy stomp that sent Hiruzen skidding back. Before Kakuzu could follow up, the Adamantine Staff elongated once more, slamming into Kakuzu and driving him into the lakebed.

Hiruzen shook off the ringing in his head just as a massive Water Dragon erupted from the lake. He quickly wove hand signs. "Earth Style: Earth-Style Wall!" The stone rampart rose just in time to intercept the wave. Kakuzu surged out of the water, his arms hardened into stone blades, but Hiruzen used the staff to propel himself high into the air.

From above, Hiruzen swung the staff down with bone-crushing force. Kakuzu retreated, but the staff's length adjusted instantly, catching him and smashing him into the dirt. Kakuzu dissolved into a puddle of water—a clone. He reappeared behind Hiruzen, his hands transformed into jagged earth spears.

"Extend!" Hiruzen roared. The staff lengthened toward the ground, launching him upward to safety while the other end pinned Kakuzu against the earth. Following up, Hiruzen cast "Earth Style: Earth Dragon Bullet." A draconic head rose from the soil, spitting a barrage of high-velocity stone projectiles. Kakuzu countered with "Earth Style: Rock Fist," shattering the incoming stones.

The two engaged in a frantic exchange of Taijutsu and Ninjutsu. Hiruzen's mastery of the staff and his elemental versatility began to match Kakuzu's raw power. Sensing more Leaf reinforcements approaching, Kakuzu realized the window of opportunity was closing.

"You're lucky today, brat," Kakuzu rasped, backing away toward the water. "You're a formidable fighter, but next time, you won't be so fortunate." He dove into the lake and vanished into the underground currents.

Koharu Utatane and Homura Mitokado arrived moments later. Hiruzen lay on the ground, panting. "Did you two decide to take a scenic stroll? I almost died out here!"

Koharu ignored the complaining and surveyed the devastation: the unconscious Torifu Akimichi, the wounded Danzo Shimura, and the small, pale form of Uchiha Aki surrounded by the corpses of Waterfall ninja. "Was it the Takikage who did this?" she asked, shocked by the scale of the battle.

"No," Hiruzen rasped. "A rogue ninja with a scar across his headband. I don't know his name."

Homura knelt beside the wounded. "Torifu is exhausted from his clan's pills. Danzo is stable. But this boy..." He stopped as he checked Aki's pulse. "His life force is draining rapidly! If we don't get him medical help immediately, he won't survive the hour!"

"What happened?" Hiruzen asked, rushing over. "He was holding his own when I arrived. He didn't look like he took a fatal blow."

"It's not an external wound," Koharu noted grimly. "It's internal. His chakra pathway system is collapsing."

Hiruzen cursed. They had no medical ninja or equipment. Thinking quickly, he looked at his summon, Enma. "Enma, take this boy back to the Ape Realm. Have your father reverse-summon you both directly into Konoha. It's the only way to get him to the hospital in time!"

Enma nodded. "The Elder will understand." Hiruzen lifted Aki's small body. "See you back at the village, kid." With a puff of smoke, they vanished.

The news of the First Hokage's death rippled through the world like a shockwave. Within a month, the fragile peace shattered.

The Hidden Stone and Hidden Waterfall launched a surprise invasion through several nations, targeting the Hidden Cloud. This triggered a massive conflict in the Land of Hot Water, marking the start of the First Great Ninja War.

The Land of Wind declared war on the Land of Rain, prompting Konoha to intervene as Rain's protector. Soon, the Hidden Mist joined the fray, attacking the Land of Whirlpools. Konoha, bound by alliance to the Uzumaki, declared war on the Mist.

The era of peace had lasted barely fifteen years. Now, the world was on fire.

Konoha Ninja Hospital

Aki's eyes fluttered open. A hospital? I'm alive?

A nurse spotted him and called for the doctors. His mother, Nanako, appeared instantly. She had barely left his side for four months. Seeing her son awake, she wept with relief.

Over the next few days, Torifu visited to fill him in. Aki had been in a coma for a third of a year. He had only survived because Mito Uzumaki used her mastery of sealing and the Nine-Tails' chakra to stabilize his soul after the "Hero's Water" nearly burned it away.

But the most crushing news was the confirmation of Hashirama Senju's passing. Aki fell into a deep silence. He had lost his master, the man who had given him a new path.

Once he was strong enough to walk, Aki slipped out of the hospital. He climbed the Hokage Rock and sat atop the head of the First Hokage, looking out over the village. He remembered the six months of training, the laughter, and the lessons.

Master's village... I will protect it with my life, he vowed. His eyes flared, the Two-Tomoe Sharingan spinning violently until a third tomoe manifested. His resolve had matured his bloodline.

"Discharging yourself early is bad for your health," a voice said from behind him. "And imagine the look on your mother's face when she finds you gone."

Aki turned to see Tobirama Senju, the Second Hokage.

"I heard your vow," Tobirama said, staring out at the village. "Work hard. If you do, perhaps one day you might truly sit in this chair."

Aki smiled, his eyes reflecting the village lights. "Master said the same thing. I'm going to give it everything I've got."

The two stood together in the moonlight, the veteran and the prodigy, both bound by the same Will of Fire.
