Chapter 3 - Story 3: The Hill That Moved at Night

In the northern part of the country there was a small hill village named Kalidara. The village stood on the side of a long green hill covered with tall trees and thick grass. For many years the villagers lived peacefully there, growing vegetables and fruits on the slopes of the hill.

The hill was beautiful, but it also required respect.

The older villagers always warned the younger ones about cutting too many trees on the slope. Tree roots held the soil tightly together and prevented the earth from sliding during heavy rain.

For generations, the villagers followed this unwritten rule.

But times were changing.

A businessman named Dinesh Roy came to Kalidara with a new plan. He believed the hilltop had the perfect view for building vacation houses for people from the city.

He offered money to several villagers to sell their land near the top of the hill.

Many young villagers were excited. Selling a small piece of land could bring more money than years of farming.

Soon construction began.

Large machines were brought to the hill to clear trees and flatten land for houses. Dozens of tall trees were cut down within weeks. Roads were carved into the slope so vehicles could reach the top easily.

An elderly farmer named Hari Mohan watched the construction carefully.

One evening he spoke to the workers.

"This hill is soft inside," he warned. "The trees hold the soil together. Without them, the ground may not stay stable."

The workers listened politely but continued their work.

For a year, nothing unusual happened.

The houses were completed, and visitors started coming during holidays. From the hilltop they could see the wide valley below, shining rivers, and distant villages.

Everything seemed peaceful.

Then the rainy season arrived.

That year the monsoon rains were stronger than usual. Day after day, rain soaked the hill. The soil became wet and heavy.

Normally, tree roots would absorb some of that water and hold the soil firmly.

But many of those trees were gone.

Late one night, after several days of rain, the ground beneath the newly built road began to move.

At first it was only a small shift.

Then suddenly, a large section of the hillside collapsed.

Mud, rocks, and loose soil slid down the slope, destroying part of the road and damaging two houses.

Fortunately, most people escaped in time.

The next morning the villagers gathered near the damaged area. The hillside looked different now. A deep scar marked the place where the soil had slid away.

Engineers later explained what had happened.

The removal of trees had weakened the slope. Without roots holding the soil together, the heavy rainwater caused the earth to lose stability.

The hill had simply followed the laws of gravity and nature.

After the accident, construction on the hill stopped completely.

New trees were planted across the damaged slopes, and the villagers returned to their traditional farming.

Years later, the hill slowly recovered.

And the people of Kalidara remembered an important lesson:

The strength of a hill does not come from stone alone.

It also comes from the trees that hold the earth together.
