Chapter 3 - Chapter 2: Rules of the Grim Reaper

The city was quiet now, but Gaon didn't relax. His hands still trembled from the fight, and the glow of the scythe faded slowly. The system's floating screen hovered in front of him, filled with information he barely understood.

System:

"Host, you have survived your first battle. You are now Level 1 Grim Reaper. Use your skills to collect souls, protect the living, and follow the rules of the modern world underworld. Failure may result in death or loss of powers."

Gaon frowned. "Rules… underworld… what does all that mean?"

The system pulsed and displayed a new menu. Missions, soul tracker, skills, and a "world map" with glowing dots—souls waiting to be collected.

Before he could study it further, a new shadow appeared, faster and smaller than the one before. It darted between the alleyways, almost like a predator hunting its prey.

Gaon tightened his grip on the scythe. The system whispered:

"Warning: Weak soul approaching. If ignored, it may become corrupted and stronger."

Without hesitation, Gaon leapt into action. The shadow tried to strike him, but he rolled and swung his scythe. The glow of his Shadow Strike hit it, pulling the soul into the system. Another small victory—but Gaon realized something important:

Every soul mattered. Every soul could become a threat if ignored.

Suddenly, a new notification appeared:

New Objective: Investigate unusual activity near the city park. Multiple corrupted souls detected.

Gaon's heart raced. The city wasn't just some kind of battlefield; it was alive with dangers he couldn't see. And he couldn't ignore them—not if he wanted to survive.

As he sprinted toward the park, the system added one more line:

"Host, beware. Other Grim Reapers exist. Some are allies. Some are hunters."

Gaon's eyes narrowed. He clenched his scythe. The modern world had just become a dangerous game… and he was in the middle of it.

---

Gaon arrived at the city park. Normally, it was quiet and empty this late, but tonight, shadows swirled between the trees. Their shapes were twisted, unnatural, and their eyes glowed faint red.

"Corrupted souls…" Gaon muttered, gripping his scythe tighter.

Suddenly, one of the shadows shot out from behind a tree, lunging at him with speed he hadn't seen before. Gaon jumped back and swung his scythe. The Shadow Strike hit, but the soul split into three smaller, faster shadows.

"Damn it…" he muttered. He barely had time to react as the shadows circled him, trying to overwhelm him.

System: "New skill available: Shadow Step. Use to dodge attacks and reposition instantly."

Gaon concentrated. He felt his body blur, then in a blink, he reappeared behind one of the shadows. He slashed, pulling it into the system. Another step—another strike—and the second shadow vanished.

But the third was smart. It darted toward a group of civilians walking their dog. Gaon's heart raced. He couldn't let them get hurt.

Thinking fast, he jumped high and swung the scythe in a wide arc. A pulse of energy radiated outward, hitting the shadow midair and sending it into the system. The civilians stared, wide-eyed, but safe.

Gaon landed on the ground, panting. His scythe glowed faintly, still charged with leftover energy. He looked around—more shadows were appearing, drawn by the chaos.

And then he saw it: a figure standing in the shadows, cloaked in black, holding a scythe that gleamed like his own.

System Alert: "Warning: Unknown Grim Reaper detected. Approach with caution."

The figure stepped forward, and a chilling smile appeared under the hood. "So… you're the new Reaper in town," the stranger said. "Not bad… but you won't survive long without learning the real rules."

Gaon's blood ran cold. This wasn't just about collecting souls anymore. There were others like him. Some would help, some would hunt him.

The park became a battlefield. Shadows swirled, and the unknown Grim Reaper raised their scythe. Gaon gripped his weapon tighter, adrenaline surging.

Tonight, he would learn: this world didn't forgive mistakes—and every fight was a lesson in survival.

---

The cloaked figure swung their scythe in a wide arc. The sharp blade cut through the air, leaving a faint trail of dark energy. Gaon barely ducked, feeling the wind rush past his face.

"Not bad for a rookie," the stranger said, their voice cold. "But let's see how you handle this."

Suddenly, the figure struck the ground, and dozens of shadow clones shot toward Gaon. Each moved independently, circling him from every side. Gaon's heart raced. He had to think fast.

System: Use Shadow Step to dodge, Shadow Strike to attack.

Gaon concentrated, his body blurring as he teleported behind one clone. He swung his scythe, pulling it into the system. Another Shadow Step—another clone gone. But the clones kept coming, faster and faster.

Then the mysterious Grim Reaper laughed. "Impressive… but you can't escape me!"

They teleported above Gaon, swinging their scythe downward. Gaon rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding the strike, sparks flying where the blades almost met. He gritted his teeth. He had to end this fast—or the clones would overwhelm him.

He focused all his energy. A black-and-blue aura surrounded his scythe.

"Shadow Surge!" he shouted.

A powerful wave of energy shot from the scythe, sending all the shadow clones flying into the system. The mysterious Reaper stumbled back, eyes narrowing in surprise.

Gaon didn't wait. Using Shadow Step, he dashed toward the figure, slashing his scythe in a wide arc. The stranger blocked it, and their scythes clashed, sparks flying, echoing through the park.

"You've got potential," the figure said, pushing Gaon back with a powerful strike. "But potential isn't enough. You need control, strategy… and courage."

Gaon wiped blood from his lip, breathing heavily, but a spark of determination lit in his eyes. "I may be new… but I'm not afraid to fight!"

The figure paused, then smirked. "Good. Then survive. Learn fast. Because in this world… the strong take everything, and the weak… disappear."

With that, the stranger vanished into the shadows, leaving Gaon alone among the swirling remnants of corrupted souls.

Gaon looked at his scythe, still glowing faintly. His body ached, but he felt stronger than ever. He realized something important: this was only the beginning. Every fight, every mission, would test him.

The modern world was dangerous. And Gaon… he was no longer a victim. He was a Grim Reaper.
