Chapter 2 - Chasing Chaos

The crimson sun peeked over the obsidian mountains that bordered the Vampire Kingdom, casting golden light through the velvet curtains of the royal nursery. Birds with shimmering black feathers cooed softly outside the towering windows, their song blending with the distant hum of guards changing posts.

And in the center of it all—was chaos.

> "Kenneth! Sit still, just for a moment—please!"

Queen Seraphina's voice, usually calm and laced with elegance, now danced with laughter and mild frustration. Her long ivory hair was slightly out of place, something that rarely ever happened, and she held in her hands a silken shirt made of enchanted fabric the color of midnight. She had tried everything—gentle coaxing, teasing bribes, even minor enchantments—to get her son dressed.

But Prince Kenneth Valdros was a storm of energy.

He darted across the room like a comet, giggling as he leapt from couch to bedpost, somersaulted across the floor, and narrowly avoided the grasp of two flustered maidservants. His bright blue eyes sparkled like moonlit sapphires, and his skin, a warm light brown hue kissed with immortality, glistened with the sheen of vitality. His black curls bounced with every twist and turn as he darted behind a curtain, then reappeared on top of a dresser.

> "Kenneth!" Seraphina gasped as she placed a hand over her heart, exasperated but smiling. "You're starting school today, my love. You'll make friends. You'll learn to write your name."

> "But I already know how to write my name!" Kenneth called from atop the canopy of his bed, legs swinging back and forth. "K-E-N-N-E-T-H!" He beamed, flashing his little white fangs proudly.

> "Yes, yes, you clever little star. But this isn't about what you know, it's about learning to be around others. It's important."

> "But I like it here!" he whined, rolling over dramatically and hiding his face in the sheets. "I don't want other kids. I want you. And Malrik."

One of the maids tried to sneak up on him again, but Kenneth vanished in a blur—reappearing by the window. For a child of five, he moved faster than anyone his age should. Even the palace guards had stopped trying to catch him during playtime. Only one person could actually handle him when he was like this.

Seraphina sighed and shook her head gently.

> "Summon Malrik."

Moments later, the tall, ancient figure of Malrik appeared at the doorway. Dressed in his layered dark robes, the royal advisor exuded both authority and familiarity. His white hair was tied back, and his glowing crimson eyes—only ever warm for Seraphina and Kenneth—narrowed playfully as he stepped into the chaos.

> "Another morning in the kingdom of Prince Kenneth, I see."

> "Malrik!" Kenneth's head popped out from under a table, grinning wide. "I was hiding from everyone but you always find me!"

> "That's because you always leave crumbs," Malrik said, bending to pick up a broken cookie trail leading to Kenneth's last hiding spot.

> "Oh." Kenneth blinked innocently. "Oops."

> "Come here, little shadow."

Malrik's voice was calm but firm, and Kenneth knew better than to disobey him for too long. With a pout, the boy zipped across the room and leapt into Malrik's arms. The advisor caught him with ease.

> "Why don't you want to go to school, hmm?" Malrik asked, settling Kenneth on a velvet chair.

> "Because then I won't see Mama every second!" Kenneth said with a frown, cheeks puffed. "What if I forget what she smells like?"

> "Impossible," Seraphina laughed, coming over and kneeling beside him. "You're a vampire, my darling. You'll never forget what you love."

She cupped his small face in her soft hands, brushing a stray curl away from his forehead. Her touch was gentle, as if every second with him were sacred. And to her—it truly was.

He was her only child. Her miracle. Her curse and her salvation.

> "But I'm not like other vampires," Kenneth mumbled.

> "That's true," Malrik said, kneeling beside the Queen. "You're faster than your brothers already. You're curious, thoughtful… but that doesn't mean you should be alone."

Kenneth looked between the two of them, his bottom lip twitching.

> "Will you still be here when I come back?"

> "Always," Seraphina said, leaning forward and pressing a kiss to his forehead. "And you'll come back with stories for me, won't you? About what you learned, who you met?"

> "Maybe…" Kenneth replied with a sniffle, eyes wide and blue. "Okay. But only if Malrik carries me to the carriage!"

> "As if I had a choice," Malrik muttered with fondness, lifting the boy again effortlessly.

Seraphina watched them go with a hand over her chest. Her heart swelled with pride and worry. He was so special. Too special.

> "May the moon watch over you, my son," she whispered as they disappeared into the hall.

As they moved through the palace corridors, Malrik holding Kenneth in one arm, passing nobles and guards stopped to bow—but more than one lingered in awe. They stared, not just out of respect for his title, but out of wonder.

Even at five, Prince Kenneth was... different.

His beauty was undeniable. A strange, magnetic allure clung to him. Some whispered it was the blending of two lineages—the sharp allure of the vampire royal bloodline with something older, wilder, buried beneath the surface. He turned heads without trying. His smile could disarm the coldest warrior.

> "Why are they staring at me again?" Kenneth asked, tilting his head.

> "Because you're dazzling," Malrik said. "And because they can already tell—you're not meant to blend in."

> "That sounds like a lot of pressure," Kenneth muttered.

> "Good. Pressure builds diamonds. Or monsters. But that will be your choice."

Kenneth blinked. "Can I choose diamond and monster?"

Malrik chuckled. "If anyone can, it's you."

They stepped out into the morning light, where the palace carriage awaited. Malrik set Kenneth down gently, then straightened the boy's tiny collar.

> "This is your first day, little prince. Walk tall. Listen well. And if anyone tries to bully you…"

> "I'll trip them with my super-speed?"

> "I was going to say 'tell a teacher.' But yes, that works too."

Kenneth grinned, hugged Malrik tightly, and then climbed into the carriage.

From the palace window above, Seraphina watched as the wheels rolled away, her fingers pressed to the glass.

> "You are joy now," she whispered to herself, "but one day, the world will try to make you rage."

She closed her eyes.

> "I only hope your light outshines their shadows."
