Chapter 3 - Allies in the Shadows

Ava's heart was still racing from the discovery in the alley. Her parents' secrets, the strange boy, the hidden folder—it was a lot for one day. But as she walked the dim streets back to her small, nondescript apartment, a sudden shout made her freeze.

"Ava! Over here!"

She turned, and three familiar faces came running toward her—Julie, John, and Nick. Her best friends since childhood, stuck in this unnatural city just like her. Their expressions were tense, worried—but relief flooded Ava's chest. She wasn't alone.

Julie, with her sharp eyes and quick reflexes, grabbed Ava's arm. "You won't believe what just happened! Non-humans—they're attacking the south district. People are disappearing."

John, always the strategist of the group, spoke next, his voice tight with urgency. "We need to stick together. We can't take them on alone."

Nick, tall and strong, gave a nod. "Yeah, but together? We might just stand a chance."

Ava's stomach twisted, equal parts fear and excitement. Non-humans. The word made her pulse spike. Creatures that didn't belong to her world… and now they were real, threatening everyone she cared about.

Without another word, the four of them moved through the shadowed streets, a silent team in perfect sync. Ava felt a surge of adrenaline. For the first time since her parents' deaths, she felt… purpose.

The first encounter was brutal. Dark, twisted creatures with sharp claws and glowing eyes emerged from the alleyways. They were fast, inhuman, and terrifying. Ava's friends fought fiercely—Julie striking with precise agility, John setting traps, Nick protecting them all with raw strength.

Ava felt fear clawing at her chest, but then she remembered the pendant her mother had given her. Gripping it tightly, she took a deep breath, letting the anger and grief inside her fuel her movements. She ran forward, dodging a swipe, and struck the creature with everything she had.

One by one, the creatures fell. The team moved as one, their bond stronger than any fear, any doubt. And when the last non-human collapsed into the shadows, the four friends stood together, panting and bruised—but alive.

Ava looked at them, a spark of hope igniting. This is what strength feels like. This is what it means to fight—for yourself and for the people you love.

"We're going to get through this… together," she whispered, more to herself than anyone else. And for the first time, the shadows didn't feel quite so heavy.

Because she wasn't alone anymore.
