Chapter 118 - 118. The Unwelcomed

Chapter 118: The Unwelcomed

The Going Merry creaked softly as the crew steered toward the foggy, snow-covered island. The once hectic seas of the Grand Line had become eerily calm near the island's shore, the cold air growing more pronounced with each passing moment. The faint sound of flowing water broke the silence as the ship drifted toward a narrow river that snaked its way into the dense, foggy forest ahead.

Standing at the helm, Vivi surveyed the scene with a mix of caution and wonder. "Each island in the Grand Line has its own unique climate," she explained, breaking the silence. "This one... it is snow. An island of eternal winter."

Luffy, standing nearby, glanced at her. He already knew. He had known before they even saw the snow. Drum Island. He said nothing. He just watched the fog.

"That explains why the weather has been so chaotic out at sea," he said instead. "But I noticed something. Near each island, the weather stabilizes."

"You are right," Vivi replied with a nod. "Near an island, the weather reflects the climate of that island. It is the only stable point in the chaos."

As they drifted further along the river, the landscape became shrouded in mist. The trees lining the banks were tall and barren, their twisted branches reaching out like skeletal fingers. The snow on the ground glistened faintly under the pale light filtering through the fog.

"This place is... unsettlingly quiet," Zoro muttered, his hand resting on one of his swords as his eyes scanned the surroundings.

"Yeah, like a graveyard," Sanji added, his tone unusually serious. "Not a single bird chirping, no animals moving around... nothing."

"Maybe it is uninhabited," Usopp suggested nervously, his hands clutching his slingshot as he peered into the mist. "No one in their right mind would live in a place like this."

Luffy's gaze remained fixed on the fog ahead. "It is not uninhabited," he said, his voice calm but firm. "I can sense them. Thousands of people on this island. They are just... hiding."

The crew exchanged uneasy glances. Sanji lit a cigarette, exhaling a cloud of smoke into the cold air. "Hiding, huh? That is even worse. What could they be hiding from?"

As the Going Merry followed the river deeper into the island, the fog grew thicker, the air colder. The only sounds were the gentle lapping of water against the hull and the occasional creak of the ship's timbers. Johnny emerged from below deck, wiping his hands on a cloth. He leaned against the railing, his sharp eyes scanning the surroundings.

"This place gives me the creeps," Johnny admitted, his voice low. "There is something... off about it."

"You are not the only one feeling that," Zoro said, his tone gruff. "It is too quiet. Like the calm before a storm."

Sanji took a long drag from his cigarette. "Whatever is out there, it is better we find it before it finds us."

Usopp shivered, wrapping his arms around himself. "Why do I always end up on the creepy islands? Can not we just find a nice, normal place for once?"

Despite the tension in the air, Luffy remained focused. He stepped toward the bow of the ship, his eyes narrowing as the river curved to reveal a small clearing up ahead. The mist thinned slightly, revealing the end of the river and a rocky shore beyond.

"Everyone, stay alert," Luffy said, his voice cutting through the silence. "We are not alone here."

The ship slowed as it approached the shore, the crew preparing to disembark. The eerie stillness of the island weighed heavily on them, each member of the crew steeling themselves for whatever lay ahead.

As the Going Merry drifted closer to the rocky shore, the fog surrounding the island began to lift, revealing shadowy figures that dotted the coastline. At first, only a handful of silhouettes could be made out, their movements slow and deliberate. But as the mist fully cleared, the full scale of the scene became apparent. At least a hundred men and women, armed to the teeth, formed a blockade along the shoreline. Muskets gleamed ominously in the dim light, bows were drawn with taut strings, and crude cannons pointed menacingly at the ship.

The crewmates on board could feel the palpable hostility emanating from the islanders. These were not the wary eyes of villagers hoping to protect their homes. They were the sharp glares of seasoned defenders, prepared to kill.

From the center of the gathering, a singular figure emerged from the ranks. His heavy boots crunched against the rocky terrain as he walked forward, the crowd parting around him as if making way for a force of nature. The man was tall and powerfully built, with broad shoulders encased in heavy golden armor that shimmered in the dim light. His green overcoat, lined with thick fur, swayed with his measured steps. Strapped to his back was a massive sword, its hilt worn from use but no less imposing. His expression was grim. A scowl etched into his features, one that spoke of no tolerance for games or deception.

He stopped at the water's edge, his commanding presence drawing the attention of all, including the Straw Hats. His voice, low and gravelly, carried over the sound of crashing waves. "This island does not welcome pirates," he growled, his piercing eyes scanning the ship and its crew. "You have one chance to turn around and leave. If you do not, we will fire. And believe me, your ship will be nothing but splinters at the bottom of the ocean."

For a moment, there was only silence. The Straw Hats exchanged glances, each waiting for someone to speak. Then, stepping forward with confidence, Luffy placed himself at the forefront of the crew.

"My name is Monkey D. Luffy," he declared, his voice calm yet firm. "I am the captain of this crew, and we are not here to cause trouble. One of our members is gravely ill, and we need a doctor."

Before the man could respond, the islanders behind him erupted into shouts.

"Do you think we are fools?" a gruff man barked from the left, brandishing his musket. "Pirates do not come here for help. They come to steal, loot, and kill!"

"You expect us to believe this nonsense?" yelled another, a woman with a bow slung over her shoulder. "Take your lies and get the hell out of here before we put holes in your ship!"

"You are just stalling for time!" a younger man added, his voice trembling with both anger and fear. "You are probably waiting for reinforcements to raid us. We are not falling for it!"

Vivi stepped forward, her hands raised in a gesture of peace. Her voice was soft but filled with urgency as she tried to reason with them. "Please, listen to us! We really are not here to hurt anyone. We just need a doctor."

"Shut up, you pirate whore!" a sharp voice cut her off, dripping with venom. A chorus of laughter and jeers followed.

"Why do not you and your crew just die at sea?" another woman sneered.

"You think crying will work on us? Get off our island!" someone else shouted, his tone bitter and unrelenting.

The tension reached its breaking point as a musket suddenly discharged. The loud crack echoed across the shoreline, and before anyone could react, the bullet found its mark. Vivi cried out in pain as the shot tore into her shoulder, the force of it sending her staggering back before she collapsed onto her knees. Her hand instinctively went to the wound, blood seeping through her fingers as her face contorted in pain.

"VIVI!" Usopp screamed, rushing to her side, his voice laced with panic.

The atmosphere shifted in an instant. Zoro's hand went to Yubashiri's hilt, the steel singing as he unsheathed the blade. His expression was dark and unreadable, but the deadly intent was clear. Sanji stepped forward, his body already angled into a fighting stance, while Johnny spun his sword into position, his cold eyes scanning the crowd for a target. Even Usopp, trembling with fear and anger, had his slingshot drawn and ready to fire.

Luffy, however, stood frozen. His eyes locked onto Vivi, her blood staining the deck as her quiet groans of pain reached his ears.

Something inside him broke.

It was not anger. It was not rage. It was something deeper, something primal, something that had been sleeping inside him since the day he woke up in this body. It was love. Love for his crew. Love for the woman who was suffering. Love for the people who had trusted him, followed him, believed in him.

And it erupted.

The Conqueror's Haki exploded from him without warning, without control, without conscious thought. He did not activate it. He did not summon it. It came because he could not hold it back any longer. It came because Nami was dying below deck and Vivi had just been shot and the people on this shore had dared to hurt someone he loved.

The wave of pressure slammed into the island like a physical force.

The ground shook. The trees bent. The river behind the ship churned and splashed as if struck by an invisible giant. The air itself seemed to thicken, to press down, to crush.

The crew felt it immediately. Zoro staggered, his hand going to his chest, his breath catching in his throat. His eyes went wide. He had felt many things in his life. Fear. Pain. Exhaustion. But this was different. This was pure will, pressed against him like a mountain.

Sanji dropped his cigarette. His legs buckled. He caught himself on the railing, gasping, his face pale. "What... what is this?"

Johnny fell to one knee. His sword clattered to the deck. His hands were shaking. He could not breathe. The pressure was too much. It was like the entire sky had decided to sit on his chest.

Usopp was on the ground, curled up, his hands over his head. He was not even trying to fight it. He could not. His body had simply given up.

Yosaku, still in the crow's nest, gripped the wooden railing so hard his knuckles split. Blood dripped down his fingers. He was screaming, but no sound came out. His lungs would not work.

On the shore, the islanders fared no better.

The armed men and women who had been shouting, jeering, threatening, fell like wheat before a scythe. Muskets dropped from nerveless hands. Bows clattered to the ground. The cannons, aimed and ready, were forgotten. Dozens of them collapsed where they stood, their eyes rolling back, their bodies going limp. Some managed to stay upright, but only just. They clutched their heads, their chests, their throats. They gasped for air that would not come.

The man in the golden armor staggered. His hand went to his sword, but he could not draw it. His legs shook. Sweat poured down his face. He had fought pirates before. He had faced death before. But this... this was not a fight. This was something else entirely. This was a force of nature, and he was standing in its path.

Deep in the village, hidden behind locked doors and barred windows, the villagers felt it too. Old women clutched their chests and fell to their knees. Children screamed and hid under beds. Men who had taken up arms and stayed behind to guard their families found themselves unable to move, pinned in place by an invisible weight.

A doctor in a dark room, preparing medicine, dropped her vial and watched it shatter on the floor. She did not bend to pick up the pieces. She could not. Her hands were shaking too badly.

A young girl with pink hair and a blue hat looked up from her book. Her eyes were wide. She did not understand what was happening. But she felt it. She felt the pressure, the weight, the overwhelming presence of someone who was very, very angry.

And then, as suddenly as it had come, it stopped.

Luffy's breathing slowed. The storm inside him began to settle. His aura, which had been lashing furiously, went still. The pressure lifted. The air returned to normal.

The crew gasped, sucking in breath after breath. Zoro straightened, his hand still on his sword. Sanji picked up his cigarette from where it had fallen. Johnny pushed himself to his feet, his legs still shaking. Usopp stayed on the ground, curled up, not moving.

On the shore, the islanders lay scattered across the rocks. Some were unconscious. Others were awake but unable to rise. The man in the golden armor was still standing, barely. His face was pale. His hands were trembling. He was looking at Luffy with an expression that was no longer hostile. It was something else. Something closer to fear.

Luffy turned to his crew. His voice, when he spoke, was quiet. Controlled. But there was something underneath it, something that had not been there before.

"We will not even drop anchor if that is what it takes," he said. "We just need a doctor for our crewmate. Nothing more. I am giving you my word. We are not here to loot or raid. We just want to help her."

He turned back to the man in the green and golden armor. His eyes were dark. His voice dropped.

"But your next move will decide whether this island stays standing by the time we leave."

He did not flare his aura. He did not need to. The weight of his words was enough. The islanders, those who were still conscious, understood. This was not a threat. It was a promise.

The man in the golden armor looked at Luffy for a long moment. Then he looked at the crew. At Vivi, bleeding on the deck. At the ship, small and battered but still floating.

He nodded. Once.

"Bring your sick," he said. "We will take you to the doctor."

Luffy did not smile. He did not thank him. He simply turned and walked back to where Vivi lay, kneeling beside her, pressing his hand against her wound.

"Someone get the first aid kit," he said. "And someone tell me where Nami is. We are getting them both to that doctor. Now."
