Chapter 111 - 111. The Weight of Steel

Chapter 111: The Weight of Steel

The clearing was a graveyard of wax and blood and broken trees. Mr. 3 stood at its center, his wax armor gleaming in the fading light, his glasses pushed up on his nose. Behind him, Mr. 5 knelt on the ground, his chest a mess of shallow cuts, his breathing ragged. Miss Valentine lay motionless nearby, her yellow dress stained crimson, her parasol snapped in two.

Zoro stepped forward. His hand rested on the hilt of Yubashiri. Sandai Kitetsu hung at his hip, waiting.

"Luffy," he said without turning. "The wax guy is mine."

Luffy nodded. He did not move to help. He stood at the edge of the clearing, his arms crossed, his expression empty. Watching.

Mr. 3's eyes flicked between them. He was calculating. He was always calculating. "You think you can cut through my wax? It is harder than steel. Your swords will shatter before they touch me."

Zoro drew Yubashiri. The blade caught the light, clean and steady. He did not respond. He simply walked forward.

Mr. 3 raised his hands. Wax poured from his palms, a torrent of white that surged across the ground, climbing over the fallen trees, filling the spaces between them. Zoro did not stop. He swung Yubashiri, and the blade cut through the first wave. Wax scattered in chunks, but more came. Always more.

"You are persistent," Mr. 3 said, sounding almost bored. "But persistence without power is just noise."

He shaped the wax into a spear and hurled it. Zoro sidestepped, but the spear exploded on impact, sending shards of hardened wax in every direction. One caught Zoro's arm. Another sliced across his cheek. Blood welled up, dark against his skin.

Zoro did not flinch. He kept walking.

Mr. 3's eyes narrowed. He formed a second spear. A third. A fourth. They flew at Zoro in rapid succession, each one faster than the last. Zoro dodged some, cut through others, but the shards found him. His arms bled. His legs bled. A deep gash opened on his side.

He did not stop.

"You are going to die," Mr. 3 said. "Why do you keep coming?"

Zoro's answer was a blade to the face.

Mr. 3 raised his wax shield at the last moment. The impact drove him back, but the shield held. He laughed. "Harder than steel, swordsman. You cannot break it."

Zoro stepped back. He sheathed Yubashiri and drew Sandai Kitetsu. The cursed blade hummed in his hand, eager, hungry. He could feel its energy, wild and chaotic, pressing against his control.

"We will see," Zoro said.

He attacked again.

The second wave was faster. Sandai Kitetsu cut through the wax like it was paper, but Mr. 3 was ready. He shaped his defenses into layers, walls behind walls, each one harder than the last. Zoro cut through three, four, five. Blood dripped from his wounds. His arms screamed. His lungs burned.

But he kept cutting.

Mr. 3's confidence began to crack. "How are you doing this? My wax is harder than steel. It should be unbreakable."

"Your wax," Zoro said, "is not the problem."

He drove Sandai Kitetsu into the sixth wall. The blade stopped. The wax held. Zoro pushed harder, but the sword would not move. Mr. 3 smiled.

"Finally," he said. "You have reached your limit."

He raised his hands and shaped the wax around Zoro's sword arm. It climbed up his wrist, his forearm, his elbow. Zoro tried to pull back, but the wax was too strong. It held him in place.

"Now," Mr. 3 said, "you die."

He formed a wax blade and swung it at Zoro's neck.

Zoro dropped.

He released Sandai Kitetsu and fell to the ground, rolling under the swing. The wax blade passed over his head, close enough to cut his hair. He came up with Yubashiri in his hand, the blade already swinging.

It caught Mr. 3 across the chest. Not deep. The wax armor absorbed most of the blow. But it was enough. Mr. 3 staggered back, and Zoro used the moment to pull Sandai Kitetsu free from the wax wall.

He stood with both blades in his hands. His blood dripped onto the ground. His chest heaved. But his eyes were clear.

"You are still standing," Mr. 3 said. "Why?"

Zoro did not answer. He was thinking about something Luffy had said, weeks ago, on the deck of the Going Merry. About Haki. About coating your blades in it. About making any sword a black blade.

He had not understood then. He was not sure he understood now. But as he stood there, bleeding, exhausted, facing an enemy whose defenses should have been unbreakable, something clicked.

He reached inside himself. Not for strength. Not for speed. For something else. Something deeper.

His blades darkened.

It was subtle at first, a shadow that crept across the steel, barely visible in the fading light. But it was there. He could feel it. The Haki was flowing from his hands into the swords, coating them, strengthening them, making them more than they had been.

Mr. 3 did not notice. He was already shaping his final attack. Wax poured from his palms in a torrent, forming a massive hammer, bigger than anything he had made before.

"Goodbye, swordsman," he said.

He swung.

Zoro moved.

He crossed the distance between them in a single stride, his blades cutting through the wax hammer like it was nothing. Not like steel. Like air. The Haki had done its work. The swords were black now, gleaming, unstoppable.

Mr. 3's eyes went wide. "What..."

Zoro's blades found his chest. The wax armor shattered. The Haki cut through it like it was not there, because to the Haki, it was not. Mr. 3 flew backward, his armor in pieces, his body broken. He hit the ground hard and did not get up.

Zoro stood over him, breathing hard. His blades were still black. He looked at them, at the darkness that clung to the steel, and he understood.

He sheathed them. The darkness faded.

Mr. 3 was alive. Barely. But alive.

Zoro turned and walked back toward Luffy.

---

Luffy had not moved from his spot at the edge of the clearing. His arms were still crossed. His expression was still empty. But his eyes were on the two figures lying on the ground. Mr. 5, kneeling, barely conscious. Miss Valentine, motionless, her blood pooling beneath her.

He walked toward them. Slowly. Deliberately.

His sandals made soft sounds against the broken earth.

He stopped in front of Miss Valentine. Her eyes were open, barely. She was dying. She knew it. He knew it.

Mr. 5 looked up at him, his face twisted with fear and anger. "Stay away from her."

Luffy did not look at him. His eyes were on Miss Valentine. On her face. On the blood soaking through her yellow dress. On the way her chest rose and fell, shallow and uneven.

"Well, look what we have here," Luffy said. His voice was quiet. Flat. "I spared your lives at Whiskey Peak. And then you came here." He tilted his head. "Tell me, Miss Valentine. Have you developed a crush on me or something?"

She did not answer. She could not answer.

"I mean, you are great and all," Luffy continued. "But seeing your boobs..." He paused. "I cannot say I am impressed with your assets."
