Chapter 1 - summer in Tokyo

Akira Matsumoto, a 25-year-old photographer, escaped the Tokyo heat to visit his best friend, Toshi, at his family's traditional ryokan (Japanese inn) in the countryside. Toshi's sister, Kori, a beautiful and intelligent woman, was home for the summer.

As Akira captured the ryokan's serene beauty, he fell for Kori's kindness and strength. Kori, too, was drawn to Akira's carefree spirit and creative energy. They spent lazy mornings exploring the gardens, laughing together over matcha, and sharing stories of their dreams.

Their romance blossomed, but Kori's past heartache and Toshi's disapproval threatened to tear them apart. Akira planned a surprise picnic, hoping to win Kori's heart. But fate had other plans. Kori's mother, ill for months, took a turn for the worse.

Akira and Kori rushed to the hospital, holding hands, praying for a miracle. But it was too late. Kori's mother passed away, leaving her devastated. Akira held her, tears streaming down his face, as she whispered, "I'll never be the same."

The days turned into weeks, and Kori withdrew, unable to face Akira or the ryokan. Akira, heartbroken, gave her space, hoping she'd find her way back to him.

One night, Akira found Kori in the gardens, cherry blossoms falling around her. "I'm sorry," she whispered. "I need time." Akira's heart shattered. He knew he might lose her forever.

Kori left for a solo trip to Kyoto, seeking solace in ancient temples and quiet streets. Akira stayed behind, pouring his heart into photography, capturing the beauty of impermanence.

Months passed. Akira received a postcard from Kori: "Meet me at the ginkgo tree in Shinjuku Gyoen. Come alone." Akira's heart skipped a beat. Was it a goodbye or a reunion?

The ginkgo tree stood tall, its leaves golden in the autumn sun. Kori appeared, eyes red-rimmed. "I'm sorry, Akira. I'll always love you, but I need to find myself."

Akira's heart broke, but he smiled, knowing he'd loved her truly. "I'll wait, Kori. Always."
