Chapter 22 - Chapter 22- crazy or finally saint

The Sterling residence was a house of glass—transparent, expensive, and currently shattering. Dafne had fled Maya's bedroom like a hunted animal, her bare feet slapping against the cold pavement until she reached the perceived safety of her own home. But as she burst through the side door, she didn't find sanctuary. She found her parents on the patio, their laughter over a bottle of wine sounding like jagged glass against her raw nerves.

They didn't see her. They didn't hear her. They were too busy pretending the "new beginning" was working.

Dafne didn't stop. She ran up the stairs, but the walls felt like they were closing in. Every corner of the house smelled like the lavender her mother used to mask the scent of their fear. She didn't go to her bedroom. Instead, she pushed open the heavy mahogany door to the attic and climbed the narrow ladder to the rooftop.

The night air was freezing, whipping her hair across her face. She stepped onto the slate tiles, moving toward the very edge of the Victorian-style roof. Below, the world looked small, dark, and indifferent.

The Duel at the Gates

While Dafne stood in the wind, the street below exploded into chaos. Raphael Vane's black SUV roared into the driveway, skidding to a halt just as Leo and Maya arrived in Leo's car.

Raphael stepped out, the manila folder of Henderson's files clutched in his hand. His face was a mask of aristocratic fury.

"Get out of my way, Leo," Raphael hissed, his voice vibrating with the 'command' frequency. "Your sister has already done enough damage to her mind. I'm going to fix what she broke."

"You aren't going anywhere near her!" Leo roared, stepping into Raphael's path. He didn't care about the Vane influence anymore. He didn't care about the contracts. He saw the predator his brother had become. "I heard what you said in the gardens. You don't want to fix her—you want to own the 'Glitch'!"

"I am the only one who understands the mechanics of her soul!" Raphael screamed, losing his composure for the first time. He lunged at Leo, and the two brothers collided in a mess of suppressed rage and broken brotherhood.

Maya stood by the car, sobbing, her hands over her mouth. "Stop it! Both of you! You're the reason she's running!"

The Edge of the World

"STAY BACK!"

The scream didn't come from the driveway. It came from the sky.

Everyone froze. Raphael and Leo stopped mid-struggle, their heads snapping upward. High above them, silhouetted against the pale moon, was Dafne. She was standing on the very edge of the roof's decorative railing, her white nightgown fluttering like a ghost's shroud.

"Dafne! No!" Maya shrieked, taking a frantic step toward the house.

"IF ANYONE COMES CLOSE, I'LL JUMP!" Dafne's voice was raw, stripped of all its usual compliance. For the first time, the 'Strings' were being pulled by her own hand. "I'm tired! I'm so tired of the voices! I'm tired of being a project, and a toy, and a secret!"

She looked down at them—at Raphael, who held the files to her past; at Maya, who had tried to rewrite her heart; and at Leo, who was trying to be a hero in a story that was already a tragedy.

"I am not a glitch!" Dafne sobbed, her body swaying precariously in the wind. "I am a person! And if the only way to make you all be quiet is to leave... then I'll leave!"

The silence that followed was absolute. Even Raphael was paralyzed, the folder slipping from his numb fingers and scattering the Henderson reports across the wet grass. He realized then that his "mastery" had pushed the instrument until it snapped.

The Quiet Rescue

While the others were locked in a stalemate of horror, Chloe had slipped into the house unnoticed. She didn't yell. She didn't give a command. She moved through the attic and onto the roof with the quiet, steady step of someone who truly saw the girl, not the condition.

"Dafne," Chloe whispered, staying ten feet back. She sat down on the cold tiles, making herself small. "It's just me. There are no orders here. Just me and my sketchbook."

Dafne turned her head slightly, her eyes wild. "They won't stop, Chloe. They'll never stop pulling."

"I know," Chloe said softly. "But I'm here now. And I'm not going to let them in. Not tonight. Not ever again."

Chloe reached out a hand, not to grab, but to offer. "Come down with me. We'll go to your room. I'll lock the door, and I'll stay with you. I'll read to you until the morning. No one will talk to you. No one will ask you for a single thing."

The tension in Dafne's shoulders broke. The fight left her all at once. She stepped down from the railing and collapsed into Chloe's arms, her body racking with deep, silent sobs.

Chloe led her back down the ladder, through the house, and into the bedroom. She pushed the heavy desk in front of the door and locked it. Outside, she could hear the shouting of the parents and the boys, but inside, she pulled the covers over Dafne and sat by the bed.

"I've got you," Chloe whispered, stroking Dafne's hair as the girl finally fell into a heavy, traumatic sleep. "The world is quiet now."
