Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Girl Who Stayed Quiet

The afternoon sun shone brightly over Maplewood High School as students slowly walked out of the building.

Classes were finally over for the day, and everyone looked relieved. Some students rushed toward the school gate while others stayed behind to talk with their friends.

Yuri stretched her arms dramatically as she stepped outside.

"I survived," she announced.

Ezra laughed.

"It was just a math test."

"It was a dangerous math test," Yuri corrected.

Ezra shook his head.

"You say that about every test."

"Because every test tries to ruin my happiness," she replied.

They began walking down the sidewalk together. Yuri talked nonstop about random things while Ezra listened patiently, occasionally smiling at her dramatic comments.

From a short distance away, Michael watched them for a moment.

He quickly looked away.

It wasn't that he wanted to watch them.

But sometimes it was hard not to notice.

"Michael!"

He turned to see Aubrey walking toward him.

She had been standing near the school gate, waiting.

"Hey," Michael said.

"You're heading home?" she asked.

"Yeah."

Aubrey walked beside him as they left the school grounds.

For a few minutes they walked quietly.

Aubrey looked like she was thinking about something.

Finally she spoke.

"You seem quiet today."

Michael shrugged.

"Just tired."

"That math test?"

"Maybe."

Aubrey knew that wasn't the real reason.

She had noticed something about Michael for a long time.

He often looked calm on the outside, but sometimes his thoughts seemed somewhere else.

She also knew why.

But she never said it.

Instead, she kicked a small stone on the road while walking.

"Michael… can I ask you something?"

He glanced at her.

"Sure."

Aubrey hesitated.

Then she finally asked the question she had been thinking about for months.

"Did you ever like Yuri?"

Michael stopped walking for a moment.

The question surprised him.

Aubrey noticed the reaction immediately.

"So you did," she said quietly.

Michael sighed slightly before continuing to walk again.

"It doesn't matter anymore," he replied.

"That wasn't really an answer," Aubrey said.

Michael looked ahead at the road.

"Yeah," he admitted. "I liked her once."

Aubrey stayed silent.

Hearing it directly still hurt a little, even though she had already guessed.

"But she was already with Ezra," Michael continued. "So I never said anything."

"That must have been hard," Aubrey said softly.

Michael shrugged.

"Not really."

But his voice didn't sound completely convincing.

Aubrey looked down at the ground while walking.

Then she gathered a little courage.

"Michael… there's something I should tell you too."

He glanced at her.

"What?"

Aubrey stopped walking.

Michael stopped as well.

She looked nervous, which was unusual for her.

"I've liked you for a long time," she said.

For a moment, everything became quiet.

Cars passed by on the road nearby, and the wind moved the leaves of the trees.

Michael looked surprised.

"You didn't have to answer right away," Aubrey quickly added. "I just thought you should know."

Michael stayed silent for a moment.

Then he spoke honestly.

"Aubrey… I'm not sure about my feelings right now."

"I know," she said quickly. "And that's okay."

She smiled a little, even though she still felt nervous.

"I didn't tell you because I expected you to like me back immediately."

"Then why did you tell me?" Michael asked.

Aubrey looked at him calmly.

"Because I didn't want to keep it a secret forever."

Michael didn't know what to say.

He respected her honesty.

But he also knew his feelings were still confusing.

Meanwhile, across town, Yuri was lying on her bed while texting Yuki.

Yuki:

How did the math test go?

Yuri stared at the message.

Then she typed dramatically.

Yuri:

I might have guessed half the answers.

A few seconds later the reply appeared.

Yuki:

That sounds like your usual strategy.

Yuri laughed.

Yuri:

Exactly.

She placed her phone down and stared at the ceiling for a moment.

Her life felt normal.

School.

Friends.

Ezra.

Everything felt simple.

But somewhere else, two other hearts were already struggling with emotions they couldn't ignore.

Michael slowly walked home after saying goodbye to Aubrey.

Her confession kept replaying in his mind.

He had never expected it.

But he also couldn't deny something else.

Aubrey had always been there.

She had always been kind to him.

Maybe he just needed time to understand his feelings.

Because sometimes the hardest thing about love wasn't rejection.

It was figuring out who truly mattered.

And slowly, the story of four hearts was moving toward a moment where everything would start to change.
