Bilbo Baggins was lost in the dark caves of the Misty Mountains. He had strayed from the dwarves and was alone, searching for a way out. As he walked, he stumbled upon a mysterious lake, its waters dark and cold. Bilbo, curious, approached the edge and looked in.

As he peered into the water, he lost his grip on his pocket, and his precious Ring slipped out and fell into the lake. Bilbo didn't notice it was gone. Unbeknownst to him, the Ring was found by Gollum, a strange creature living in the caves. Gollum, obsessed with the Ring, had possessed it for years, using it to make himself invisible.

Gollum suspected theft when he couldn't find the Ring. "Thief! Thief! Baggins! We wants it, we needs it!" Gollum hissed, searching for the thief. Bilbo, hiding in the shadows, was discovered by Gollum. A riddle game ensued, with Bilbo's life at stake if he lost.

Gollum posed riddles; Bilbo answered correctly. "What has roots as nobody sees? Mountain!" Bilbo said. Gollum was surprised. "What can be broken, but never held?" Bilbo answered, "A promise!" Gollum grew suspicious. When Bilbo asked a riddle Gollum couldn't answer ("What have I got in my pocket?"), Gollum threatened Bilbo.

Bilbo, finding the Ring in his pocket, used it to become invisible. Gollum, enraged, couldn't find Bilbo. "Thief, thief!" Gollum cried, stumbling in the dark. Bilbo slipped past Gollum, heading for the exit.

Gollum, realizing the Ring was gone, went mad with rage. "We hates it, we hates it forever!" Gollum raged, but Bilbo was gone, finding a way out of the dark caves into the light.
