Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 — The Heart of the Dungeon

For a while after the battle with the Elemental Warden, none of them spoke.

The chamber behind them was still littered with shattered stone and broken crystal, but the deeper tunnel ahead felt strangely calm. The oppressive pressure that had filled the previous rooms had faded slightly, leaving behind only a steady, rhythmic pulse of mana deep within the dungeon.

Kael could feel it through the bond.

A slow… heartbeat.

He rubbed the back of his neck as they walked.

"Okay," he said quietly, "tell me I'm not the only one feeling that."

Lyria glanced back at him.

"The pulse?"

"Yeah."

Lyra nodded once.

"That is the dungeon core."

Kael blinked.

"So we're… close?"

"Yes."

Lyria stretched her arms as they walked.

"Which means whatever's guarding it is going to be very cranky."

Kael groaned.

"I was afraid you'd say that."

The tunnel sloped downward again, but this time the walls had changed. Instead of rough stone, the surfaces were smooth, almost polished, with faint glowing runes carved into the rock.

Ancient runes.

Kael could feel the magic radiating from them.

Lyra ran her fingers along one carefully.

"These inscriptions regulate mana flow."

"Translation?" Kael asked.

"They protect the core."

Lyria grinned.

"Which means we're in the final stretch."

Kael let out a slow breath.

It was strange. A few hours ago he had been terrified of even the smallest dungeon monster. Now he had fought guardians, assassins, elemental constructs—and somehow survived.

More than survived.

He had helped defeat them.

The bond pulsed warmly in his chest.

They turned one final corner.

And the tunnel opened.

Kael stopped dead.

"…Whoa."

The cavern beyond was enormous.

At least three times larger than the chamber where they fought the Elemental Warden. The ceiling rose high into darkness, and hundreds of glowing crystals illuminated the space like a night sky full of stars.

But none of that was what caught Kael's attention.

At the center of the cavern floated a massive crystal sphere.

The dungeon core.

It hovered several feet above the ground, slowly rotating. Streams of glowing mana flowed from it like ribbons, feeding into the walls and floor of the cavern.

The entire dungeon was connected to it.

Alive because of it.

Kael whispered, "That's incredible."

Lyra nodded softly.

"The heart of the dungeon."

Lyria crossed her arms and studied the room.

"Which means something's guarding it."

Right on cue, the ground trembled.

Kael sighed.

"Of course it is."

From the far side of the chamber, stone began to shift.

Not one creature.

Not even two.

Three massive figures slowly rose from the floor, their bodies forming from stone and crystal like statues coming to life.

Dungeon Sentinels.

Each one stood nearly fifteen feet tall, their bodies armored in thick stone plates threaded with glowing mana veins.

Kael counted them.

"…Three."

Lyria cracked her neck.

"That's manageable."

Kael stared at her.

"How is that manageable?"

She pointed between them.

"Three of us."

Kael groaned.

Lyra raised her hands slightly.

Ice gathered around her fingers.

"Sentinels protect the core until intruders are eliminated."

"So they're not going to negotiate?" Kael asked hopefully.

"No."

The first sentinel charged.

The ground shook with every step.

Kael felt the bond spike immediately.

"Here we go again," he muttered.

Lyria dashed forward first.

Lightning exploded around her as she launched into motion.

She slid under the sentinel's swinging arm and blasted a bolt of electricity into its knee.

The creature staggered slightly.

But the second sentinel was already moving.

Lyra thrust both hands forward.

Ice erupted from the ground, forming jagged spikes that slowed the creature's advance.

Kael focused on the bond.

The resonance crystal on his wrist flared brighter as he pushed mana into the connection.

Lightning and ice flowed through him.

Stabilizing.

Strengthening.

"Left one!" he shouted.

Lyria pivoted instantly.

Lightning flashed again as she struck the second sentinel in the chest.

The creature swung back with enormous force.

Kael pushed more mana through the bond.

The lightning strike intensified.

The sentinel's stone armor cracked.

Lyra followed immediately.

Ice spears erupted upward, pinning the creature's legs.

It collapsed with a heavy crash.

"One down," Lyria said.

"Two to go."

The third sentinel slammed its fist into the ground.

A shockwave exploded outward.

Kael barely kept his footing.

"That one's angry," he said.

Lyra nodded calmly.

"It is also the largest."

The creature roared and charged directly toward Kael.

"Oh great," he said.

"Why me?"

Lyria grinned.

"Because you're important."

The sentinel swung.

Kael instinctively threw both hands forward.

Mana surged through the bond.

Lightning and ice combined instantly.

A partial Storm Lance burst from his hands.

The attack struck the sentinel square in the chest.

The creature stumbled backward.

Kael blinked.

"…Did I just do that alone?"

Lyria laughed.

"Look at you leveling up!"

But the battle wasn't finished.

The remaining two sentinels regrouped and advanced together.

Lyra spoke calmly.

"We finish this quickly."

Kael nodded.

The bond pulsed brighter.

Three streams of mana flowed together again.

Lyria raised her hand.

Lightning gathered.

Lyra summoned spiraling frost.

Kael caught both streams and fused them together.

Storm Lance formed once more.

But this time it was bigger.

Stronger.

"Together," Kael said.

They released the attack.

The fused spell tore across the chamber like a thunderstorm.

Both sentinels were hit simultaneously.

Stone shattered.

Mana exploded outward.

When the dust settled, both constructs collapsed into rubble.

Silence filled the cavern.

Kael slowly lowered his arms.

"…I think we just cleared the dungeon."

Lyria stretched her arms.

"That was awesome."

Lyra walked toward the floating core.

"The guardians have been defeated."

She turned back toward Kael.

"The dungeon now recognizes us as its conquerors."

Kael blinked.

"That's a thing?"

"Yes."

The core pulsed brightly.

A beam of soft light descended toward them.

The bond between the three of them flared warmly.

Stronger than ever.

Kael felt it settle deep within his chest.

Permanent.

Lyria grinned.

"Well, Battery."

Kael sighed.

"I'm never escaping that nickname."

"Definitely not."

Lyra studied the glowing core thoughtfully.

"The dungeon is stable now."

Kael looked around the enormous cavern.

From scared newcomer…

To dungeon conqueror.

All in a single day.

He laughed quietly.

"Well."

He looked at the twins.

"What adventure are we accidentally starting next?"

Lyria's grin returned instantly.

"Oh trust me."

Her eyes sparkled with excitement.

"This was just the tutorial."
