Chapter 2 - The Village of Cruel Voices

After her father's death, Maya's life became even harder.

The villagers who once smiled at her now spoke with pity or cruelty.

One woman whispered loudly,

"Poor girl… she has no one now."

Another replied,

"She will probably become a servant in someone's house."

Maya heard every word.

But she never replied.

Every evening she walked to the riverbank where an old banyan tree stood.

That place was her only comfort.

Because someone always waited for her there.

Arjun.

Arjun had been Maya's friend since childhood.

He was the son of a humble carpenter.

He was not rich, but he had something rare — a brave and loyal heart.

That evening he saw Maya sitting quietly near the river.

Her eyes were red from crying.

He sat beside her silently.

For a long time neither of them spoke.

Finally Arjun said softly,

"You should not listen to what the villagers say."

Maya looked at the flowing river.

"They are right. I am alone now."

Arjun shook his head.

"You're not alone."

She looked at him.

Arjun's voice became serious.

"You have me."

Maya smiled faintly.

They had grown up together — playing near the river, studying in the small village school, sharing their dreams.

But lately something had changed between them.

Something deeper than friendship.

Arjun slowly took out a small silver pendant.

"I made this myself," he said shyly.

Maya looked surprised.

"For me?"

He nodded.

"Whenever you feel lonely, hold it. I'll always be with you."

Maya felt warmth in her heart for the first time since her father died.

But deep inside she knew something.

Her life could not remain in this village forever.
