Chapter 101 - Maya's First Crisis

Three months into her council term, Maya faced her first major challenge.

A group of young creatures—mostly teenagers, mostly newly out—had formed what they called the "Radical Integration Movement." Their platform: complete assimilation into human society. No community centers. No creature-specific spaces. No separation at all.

"They want to erase our identity," Maya reported to the council, frustration clear. "They think the only way to be accepted is to become indistinguishable from humans."

Glad listened carefully. "What's driving them?"

"Fear, I think. They grew up watching humans accept us, but they're still scared it could be taken away. They think if we're 'more human,' we're safer."

"That's... not entirely wrong."

Maya stared. "You AGREE with them?"

"I agree with the fear behind it. Not the solution." Glad leaned forward. "Maya, they're reaching out because they're scared. Your job isn't to shut them down—it's to understand them. Address the fear. Offer a better path."

"But they're attacking everything we built!"

"Because they don't understand why we built it. Teach them." Glad smiled. "You're their representative, remember? That means representing them—even when they're wrong."

Maya took a deep breath. "Okay. Okay. I'll talk to them."

"Good. And Maya?"

"Yeah?"

"Bring snacks. Hungry teenagers are impossible."
