Chapter 92 - Returning Changed

Ariel knew something had shifted the moment Glad emerged from the barrier.

"You're different."

"Am I?"

"Harder to describe. More... present."

She smiled. "The Eldest said I passed their test. Whatever that means."

"It means you're officially ancient-approved." He hugged her tightly. "I'm just glad you're back."

The journey home was quiet, reflective. Glad processed what had happened—the mountain, the voices, the validation from beings older than time.

"I'm not sure what changed," she told Ariel. "But something did. I feel... lighter. Like I've been carrying something I didn't need to."

"Maybe you were. Maybe we all are."

Back in Dumaguete, the community gathered to welcome her—not with a celebration this time, but with quiet presence. They'd felt something too, through whatever connection bound them all.

"You're different," Kim observed. "Calmer."

"I met the Eldest. Hard not to be calmed by something that old."

"The ELDEST?!"

Glad told the story over several hours, the community listening in awe.

"You met the FIRST CREATURE," Luningning breathed. "No one's done that in—ever, I think."

"They said they've watched. Always watching."

"Like Anino," Maya whispered.

Glad paused. "Yeah. Like Anino."

That night, she sat in the garden longer than usual.

"Dad, I think I finally understand. What you were doing all those years. Watching. Protecting. Loving." She touched the statue. "The Eldest said they watch too. Maybe you're with them now. Watching over all of us."

A warm breeze—warmer than usual.

"Thanks, Dad. For everything."

The breeze lingered.

Then faded.

But the peace remained.
