Chapter 16 - The Mark of the Dark Lord

Morning light crept slowly into Elena's chamber.

She woke to the distant sound of birds and the quiet rustle of curtains moving in the breeze.

For a moment she simply lay there, remembering the night before.

Kael's arms.

His voice.

The way he had looked at her.

Her cheeks warmed slightly.

But the peaceful moment didn't last long.

A knock sounded at the door.

"My lady," a maid said nervously. "The lord wishes to see you in the training courtyard."

Elena sat up quickly.

"Tell him I'll be there."

The courtyard was already alive when she arrived.

Soldiers trained with swords while servants hurried past carrying supplies.

But in the center of it all stood Kael.

Tall.

Still.

Watching.

His silver eyes immediately found Elena as she approached.

"You're late," he said calmly.

Elena crossed her arms playfully.

"I had to wake up first."

A faint smile appeared on his lips.

"You fought well yesterday," he said.

Elena shrugged.

"I just followed your lead."

Kael stepped closer.

"You trusted me."

"Of course I did."

He studied her for a moment before lifting his hand.

Dark shadows gathered in his palm.

"Elena," he said quietly, "if Seraphine attacks again, she won't come alone."

Elena's expression became serious.

"What do you mean?"

"She's gathering allies. Noble houses that resent my rule."

The shadows in his hand slowly formed into a glowing black symbol.

Elena stared at it.

"What is that?"

"A protection mark."

Her eyes widened slightly.

"You want to mark me?"

"It will strengthen your magic and allow me to sense danger near you."

He hesitated for a moment before continuing.

"But it will also bind our magic together."

Elena stepped closer.

"Kael… we're already bound."

His silver eyes softened.

"Yes," he said quietly. "But this is different."

He gently took her wrist.

"Do you trust me?"

Elena didn't hesitate.

"Always."

Kael placed his hand over hers.

The shadow mark pressed gently against her skin.

Warmth spread through her arm instantly.

It wasn't painful.

Instead, it felt like a quiet pulse connecting their hearts.

Elena gasped softly.

"I can feel you…"

Kael nodded.

"Our magic is touching."

For a moment they simply stood there, their hands still joined.

The connection between them felt stronger than anything Elena had ever experienced.

Later that evening the castle held a small gathering in the great hall.

Nobles, generals, and advisors filled the room.

Music played softly while servants carried trays of wine.

Elena stood beside Kael near the throne.

She noticed how everyone watched them.

Some with curiosity.

Others with suspicion.

A tall nobleman approached.

"My lord," he said with a bow.

But his eyes lingered on Elena.

"You truly chose… an auction bride?"

Kael's expression darkened instantly.

"Elena is my wife," he said coldly.

The noble smirked slightly.

"Of course."

His gaze returned to Elena.

"She's quite beautiful."

Before Elena could react, Kael's arm wrapped firmly around her waist.

Possessive.

Protective.

"And she is not for you to look at."

The noble swallowed and quickly backed away.

Elena looked up at Kael.

"You didn't have to scare him like that."

Kael leaned closer to her ear.

"Yes," he murmured softly.

"I did."

His hand remained on her waist as the music continued around them.

For a moment Elena felt something new in his touch.

Not just protection.

Desire.

"Dance with me," he said quietly.

Elena blinked.

"You dance?"

"Only when necessary."

He guided her onto the floor.

The musicians adjusted the tempo as the Dark Lord and his bride began to move together.

At first Elena was nervous.

But Kael's hand at her waist was steady.

His other hand held hers gently.

"You're staring," she said softly.

"I always do."

Her cheeks warmed.

"You're impossible."

"And you like it."

She laughed quietly.

As they turned across the dance floor, Elena realized something.

Everyone in the hall was watching them.

But she didn't care.

Because right now…

All she could see was him.

As the dance ended, Kael pulled her slightly closer than before.

His voice dropped low.

"Elena…"

"Yes?"

"You belong here."

"With you?"

"With me."

Elena smiled softly.

"I know."

Their faces were only inches apart again.

And for a moment the world around them faded into nothing but quiet music and candlelight.

But across the hall…

A pair of green eyes watched them with burning hatred.

Lady Seraphine.

And this time…

She wasn't alone.
