Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: I'm not leaving this time

Lin Yuhan knew the exact moment she saw him.

Her breath caught.

Not loudly. Not dramatically. Just that quiet, painful tightening in her chest like someone had suddenly pressed a hand over her heart.

Seven years.

Seven long years.

And yet the moment she saw Gu Jinhan standing under the warm golden lights of the reunion hall, it felt like no time had passed at all.

He was taller now. Stronger. The boyish softness in his face had hardened into sharp, cold elegance. He stood straight like he carried the weight of the world on his shoulders, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit that made him look even more intimidating than she remembered.

He was beautiful.

And distant.

Very distant.

Lin Yuhan stood near the entrance for a moment, forcing herself to breathe normally. Her fingers tightened slightly around the strap of her white handbag.

She was scared.

Scared that he might not want her anymore.

Scared that maybe she had come back too late.

But then — she saw it.

He looked up.

Their eyes met across the crowded hall.

Just for a second.

But that was enough.

Because she saw it.

That flicker.

That tiny, almost invisible crack in his cold expression.

He still wanted her.

Her chest warmed, something soft and aching spreading slowly through her heart. A faint smile tugged at her lips before she could stop it.

Then he looked away.

Gu Jinhan stood up from his seat.

He wasn't walking toward her.

He was leaving.

Avoiding her.

Lin Yuhan sighed quietly.

She knew it wouldn't be easy.

Maybe standing in front of everyone and boldly saying she would pursue him had been reckless. People had gasped. Some had laughed. Some had looked shocked, like they couldn't believe she had the courage to say something like that to the cold CEO of the Gu Group.

But she didn't regret it.

Not even a little.

Because she was back.

This time, she was not running.

This time, she was not leaving.

Her mind drifted back.

Back to the past she had spent so many nights remembering.

High school.

Elite private school. Wealthy students everywhere. People who looked at scholarship students like they were invisible.

Or worse.

Like they were pests.

She remembered the first time she met him.

She had been sitting alone in the classroom corner.

The bullying had started early that morning.

Three rich girls.

They had laughed while sticking chewing gum into her hair.

Then they threw her books onto the floor.

Her heart had been pounding violently as she tried to gather her books, fingers shaking because she knew she couldn't afford to replace them. Those books were bought from her scholarship allowance.

If she lost them, she would have nothing.

The girls didn't stop.

They tore her books apart.

Page by page.

Laughing while she cried.

She still remembered the sound of paper tearing.

Like something fragile breaking.

"I told you," one of the girls had said arrogantly. "Poor people don't belong here."

Another had laughed. "What are you going to do? Tell a teacher? We are rich. Powerful. Teachers won't touch us."

Rich and powerful.

The words had burned into her memory.

Rich and powerful.

Fine.

Then she would become rich and powerful too.

She would stand where they stood.

She would be someone they could never look down on again.

Just then—

The final page of her book was torn out.

She could only watch in horror as the girl laughed and dropped the pieces onto the floor like confetti before walking away with her friends.

Lin Yuhan had felt completely broken in that moment.

Not just because of the books.

But because of how powerless she felt.

That was when she heard footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Unhurried.

She had lifted her head slowly, tears blurring her vision.

And there he was.

Gu Jinhan.

Back then, he had been just another scholarship student like her. Quiet. Reserved. Always sitting alone near the window. But that day, he walked toward her with a deep scowl on his face, clearly angry.

He had stopped in front of her.

Glared at the girls who had just walked away.

"You should be careful," he had told them coldly. "I'll report this to the teacher."

The girls had only laughed.

one of them had said. "Do you really think teachers will punish us huh? "

He hadn't answered.

But he had looked at them like he was remembering their faces.

Like he was already planning how to make them regret it someday.

Then he turned back to her.

His expression softened slightly.

Without saying anything, he pulled out a white handkerchief and handed it to her.

"Wipe your tears," he had said quietly.

Then, after a pause, he added:

"We'll share mine. You can buy new books later."

It was such a simple sentence.

But in that moment, he had shone brighter than anyone she had ever seen.

Like he was standing in a world of his own.

Protective.

Quietly strong.

When she had finally come back to reality, she realized she had been crying.

She quickly wiped her tears and straightened her back.

Back then, she had made a promise to herself.

She would become strong enough to stand beside him.

Not behind him.

Beside him.

Now, standing in the reunion hall seven years later, she felt that same determination rising inside her again.

She inhaled slowly.

Then spoke, her voice steady.

"I'm not leaving this time, Jinhan."

She said it quietly.

But with absolute certainty.

"I'm not that weak girl anymore. And I'm not running away from you again."

Across the hall, Gu Jinhan's back stiffened slightly.

He didn't turn around.

But Lin Yuhan saw his hands slowly clench into fists at his sides.

And she smiled.

Because she knew.

He heard her.
