The fire crackled loudly.
Autumn stared into it, watching the flames twist and dance.
"You and Evan seem close," Luca said casually.
"We're friends."
"Just friends?"
"Yes."
Luca picked up a small stone and tossed it into the sand.
"He seemed pretty interested."
"He's interested in everyone."
"That's not reassuring."
Autumn finally looked at him.
"Are you jealous?"
He didn't answer right away.
Which was answer enough.
She smiled slightly.
"That's interesting."
"Why?"
"Because you don't seem like the jealous type."
"I'm not."
"Sure."
He looked at her again.
"You make it difficult."
Her heart skipped.
"How?"
"You don't flirt with anyone."
"That's a crime now?"
"It means when you laugh with someone…" he paused slightly.
"…it stands out."
Autumn looked away quickly.
The fire suddenly felt too warm.
