Chapter 2 - Tokyo Jujutsu High

The morning sunlight poured over the high walls of Tokyo Jujutsu High, casting long shadows across the sprawling courtyard. The air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of incense and chalk from the training grounds. Ren Akatsuki adjusted the strap of his bag nervously, glancing around at the throng of students moving with purpose.

Some practiced with cursed energy sparking from their hands, others sparred in the training rings, the sound of strikes echoing against the stone walls. To Ren, the entire campus felt alive, vibrating with energy he could almost touch, almost taste. It was both exhilarating and terrifying.

A tall, silver-haired student noticed him standing hesitantly at the gate. "You must be the new first-year," the student said, walking toward him with casual authority. "Name's Hiroki Takeda. I'll be supervising your introduction today. Don't get lost—or worse, hurt yourself."

Ren nodded. "Yes, sir."

Hiroki gave a faint smirk. "Relax. You're here because you have talent. Talent that could rival second-years if you're lucky." His gaze lingered on Ren's shadow subtly shifting on the ground. "But talent isn't enough. Technique is control, and control is discipline."

Ren swallowed. Discipline had always been his challenge. He'd relied on instinct for as long as he could remember, and while instinct had served him well in the streets of Tokyo, the world of sorcerers was different. Everything mattered—precision, timing, focus.

---

The first stop was the classroom for first-years, a wide room with a low ceiling, walls lined with books, and desks arranged in neat rows. Ren took a seat near the window, allowing him to see the courtyard where training exercises were already underway.

The door opened, and in walked a figure that instantly drew Ren's attention. She was petite but radiated authority, her black hair tied back in a precise ponytail, eyes sharp and calculating. She introduced herself as Mika Hanabira, the same student who had accompanied him during his first mission.

"Welcome to your first day," Mika said, her tone firm. "You'll be trained in all aspects of Jujutsu sorcery, from basic cursed energy manipulation to advanced techniques and combat strategy. But don't think this will be easy. You'll fail. Many of you will fail often."

Ren's stomach tightened, but he met her gaze steadily. "I'm ready."

Mika raised an eyebrow but didn't respond. Perhaps confidence—or recklessness—would be tested soon enough.

---

The morning lesson began with energy calibration exercises. Students were instructed to focus their cursed energy into small objects and manipulate them. Ren's hand hovered over a small wooden cube. At first, nothing happened. The cube remained stubbornly still. He clenched his jaw, focusing inward, drawing his energy like a river coiling through his body.

A faint black tendril of shadow leapt from his hand, wrapping around the cube. It shook, twisted, and then hovered in the air, spinning slowly. Ren's heart raced. This was his power. Shadow Dominion.

Hiroki walked behind him, arms crossed. "Not bad," he said. "But shadows aren't just extensions of your energy. They have weight, inertia, and will. Control them, or they'll control you. That tendril—if it's not precise, it could sever your connection to cursed energy for a few minutes. Or worse."

Ren nodded, swallowing. He had felt the pull of his shadows before, the strange, almost sentient quality. Controlling them was always a balance—like holding a wild animal on a leash. Too tight, and it fights. Too loose, and it escapes.

---

After the exercise, students were split into pairs for combat practice. Ren's partner was Aoi Kurogane, the scar-faced boy he had met on his first mission. Aoi grinned. "Ready to see if your shadows can survive a real fight?"

Ren took a deep breath. "I'll try not to get killed."

The bell rang, and the sparring began. Aoi lunged first, swinging a cursed weapon infused with energy. Ren's shadow reacted instantly, wrapping around the blade and deflecting it mid-swing. Sparks of cursed energy flared, illuminating the room in fleeting bursts of purple and black.

Ren pushed further, extending his shadows to create barriers and tendrils, striking at Aoi's sides. Aoi countered, his own cursed energy forming a protective barrier, gritting his teeth as Ren's technique probed and tested every weakness.

Hiroki watched silently, occasionally muttering, "Interesting… his Shadow Dominion adapts. That's rare."

The battle escalated. Shadows collided with cursed energy in explosive bursts. Ren realized something vital: his technique wasn't just defensive. It could mimic, adapt, and even use the opponent's energy against them. But every move tugged at the shadows inside him, whispering, urging. He clenched his fists to maintain control.

By the end of the sparring session, both were panting, covered in sweat, but alive. Aoi smiled, a mix of respect and challenge in his eyes. "You've got potential, Ren. Don't let that shadow of yours get the better of you. But if it stays under your control… you're going to be a monster."

Ren nodded, uncertain. Monster or not, he knew his shadows were the key to survival. And today had been only a taste of the power he wielded.

---

After classes ended, Ren was led to the training grounds, a massive open area where students practiced Domain Expansions and advanced cursed techniques. Hiroshi had instructed him to observe first, warning that jumping in unprepared could be fatal.

Ren's eyes scanned the area. Students moved fluidly, some summoning weapons, others forming complex barriers or elemental attacks. The sheer variety and creativity left him breathless. He realized that Tokyo Jujutsu High wasn't just a school—it was a proving ground for the next generation of sorcerers.

One student, a tall boy with flowing hair and a swirling fire technique, summoned a flaming dragon that roared through the air. Another, a girl with ice-cold eyes, froze the ground beneath her opponent's feet in intricate patterns, forcing him to constantly adjust.

Ren's shadow twitched, almost in response. He felt… a hunger in the darkness, as if the shadows were impatient, wanting to be tested in battle. He clenched his fists. Soon, he would.

---

As evening fell, the sky turning to deep purple, Ren returned to his dormitory, exhausted but exhilarated. Shadows clung to him like a cloak, moving subtly with each step. He knew one thing with certainty:

Tokyo Jujutsu High would challenge him, push him, and perhaps even change him. And the King of Curses lurking somewhere in the shadows… Ren's fate was already tied to it.

The shadows whispered in his mind, a reminder and a warning: Control us… or we will control you.

Ren stared at his own shadow stretching long across the dorm floor. The adventure, the danger, and the responsibility had only just begun.
