By midday, St. Aurelius Elite Academy had returned to its usual rhythm. Classrooms buzzed with quiet discussions, the courtyard filled with laughter, and the cafeteria overflowed with students enjoying their lunch break.
But even in the middle of the noise, certain names still carried weight.
Adrian Volkov was one of them.
Elena Rivera sat near the far end of the cafeteria, her tray barely touched as she flipped through a small notebook filled with music notes and unfinished compositions. Around her, students chatted freely, but she was used to the quiet space she created for herself.
Music had always been her comfort.
Even here, in a place where wealth and status seemed to matter more than talent, music was the one thing that made her feel grounded.
Across the cafeteria, however, the atmosphere was very different.
Students avoided certain tables entirely.
One of them sat near the large glass windows overlooking the courtyard.
Adrian Volkov sat there.
Not alone.
But almost.
A few students occupied the surrounding seats, though none of them dared to speak too loudly. Most of them seemed more interested in pretending to scroll through their phones than actually eating.
The unspoken rule of St. Aurelius was simple.
You didn't disturb Adrian Volkov.
Across from him, Lucas Petrov leaned back casually in his chair, completely unaffected by the tension surrounding them.
Unlike everyone else, Lucas looked perfectly comfortable.
"You know," Lucas said, stirring his drink lazily, "this whole mysterious silence thing you've got going on is very intimidating."
Adrian didn't respond.
His gaze was directed toward the courtyard outside, though it was clear he wasn't really looking at anything.
Lucas sighed dramatically.
"You asked me to find out who that girl is," he continued. "So naturally I did."
That caught Adrian's attention.
Not visibly.
But Lucas knew him well enough to notice the subtle shift.
Lucas leaned forward slightly.
"Elena Rivera," he said. "Scholarship student. Music department."
Adrian remained silent.
Lucas continued.
"Transferred here this year. Apparently she's been playing the piano since she was a kid. Her teachers say she's unusually talented."
The faintest crease appeared between Adrian's brows.
Music.
Lucas watched him carefully.
"She practices late at night sometimes," Lucas added casually. "In the music hall."
Adrian's fingers paused slightly against the table.
Lucas noticed.
"Interesting coincidence, don't you think?" he said with a small grin.
Adrian finally spoke.
"Coincidences don't exist."
Lucas chuckled.
"That's exactly what I thought you'd say."
Across the cafeteria, Elena finally looked up from her notebook.
Her gaze wandered across the crowded room before stopping unexpectedly.
Adrian Volkov.
Even sitting down, he commanded attention without trying. His posture remained straight, his expression unreadable.
But from a distance, something about him looked different.
Not intimidating.
Not powerful.
Just... quiet.
Almost isolated.
Students filled every table around him, yet no one truly interacted with him.
The realization surprised her.
For someone who ruled the entire academy with a single glance, Adrian Volkov looked strangely alone.
As if there was an invisible wall separating him from everyone else.
For a moment, Elena found herself studying him.
Trying to understand.
Lucas noticed it first.
"Well, this is new," he murmured.
Adrian's eyes shifted slightly.
"Your mystery girl is looking at you."
Adrian didn't turn immediately.
But a second later, his gaze lifted across the cafeteria.
Elena froze when their eyes met again.
For a moment, neither of them looked away.
The noise of the cafeteria seemed to fade slightly around them.
Then Adrian stood.
The movement was sudden enough to draw attention from several nearby tables.
Without saying a word, he walked out of the cafeteria.
Just like that.
Lucas blinked.
"Well," he muttered to himself, "that was dramatic."
Across the room, Elena watched him leave.
A strange feeling settled in her chest.
It wasn't fear.
It wasn't admiration either.
It was something she couldn't quite name.
Later that afternoon, the academy grounds were quiet.
Classes were still in session, leaving most of the campus nearly empty.
Adrian stood alone on the balcony outside one of the upper hallways, overlooking the gardens below.
The wind moved lightly through the trees.
For once, there were no whispers.
No students.
No expectations.
Just silence.
His thoughts drifted back to the night before.
The piano.
The melody that had echoed through the empty halls.
It had felt familiar.
Painfully familiar.
His mother used to play like that.
Soft.
Emotional.
Alive.
Adrian's jaw tightened slightly.
He hadn't allowed himself to think about her in years.
The door behind him opened quietly.
Lucas stepped out onto the balcony.
"Found you," he said.
Adrian didn't turn.
Lucas leaned against the railing beside him.
"You're thinking about the music again, aren't you?"
Silence.
Lucas sighed.
"You know," he said thoughtfully, "I've known you for a long time."
Still no response.
Lucas looked at him carefully.
"And I've never seen you stop walking for anyone."
A small pause passed between them.
Lucas continued.
"But yesterday... you did."
Adrian's voice was quiet.
"It was just music."
Lucas smiled slightly.
"Sure."
Inside the academy building, Elena walked down the hallway toward the music wing.
She had an hour before her next class.
Just enough time to practice.
As she pushed open the door to the music room, she had no idea that somewhere in the academy...
the boy everyone feared was slowly beginning to listen again.
