Chapter 5 - THE DANGEROUS ALLIANCE

THE MOMENT TWO RIVAL MAFIA PRINCES REALIZE THE WAR WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE BETWEEN THEM… AND THE DANGEROUS ALLIANCE FORMING BETWEEN THEM MAY BE THE ONLY THING THAT CAN STOP IT

For several seconds after Adrian asked the question, Leon didn't answer.

He simply watched him.

Not casually, not arrogantly—but carefully, like a man studying a weapon he might soon have to trust with his life. Adrian noticed the look immediately. In their world, hesitation meant calculation, and calculation meant risk. The silence stretched long enough that Adrian reached for the whiskey bottle again and poured himself another drink without asking permission.

The amber liquid splashed softly into the glass.

"Don't stare at me like that," Adrian muttered, lifting the drink.

Leon's brow lifted faintly. "Like what?"

"Like you're deciding whether I'm going to stab you."

Leon's lips twitched.

"I already know you would."

Adrian took a slow sip before answering. The burn of alcohol helped clear the last traces of fog from his head. "Good," he said. "Then stop pretending this situation is comfortable."

Leon exhaled quietly through his nose and finally moved, walking toward the large table positioned near the center of the penthouse. It wasn't just decorative furniture—Adrian noticed now that several tablets, files, and digital maps were spread across its surface. Leon tapped one of the screens, and a projection flickered to life above the table.

A map of the city appeared in pale blue light.

Adrian stepped closer automatically.

The instinct to analyze information overrode almost everything else.

Several red markers blinked across the map—warehouse districts, shipping docks, transportation routes.

Leon gestured toward them.

"These are the locations hit tonight."

Adrian leaned forward slightly, scanning the layout. He recognized two of them immediately.

"Marseille shipping lane," Adrian said under his breath.

Leon nodded once.

"And the logistics warehouse outside Lyon," he added.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

Both locations belonged to Moretti operations.

"And these," Leon continued, tapping another section of the map, "belong to me."

Two additional red markers pulsed on the screen.

Adrian studied the pattern.

The attacks weren't random.

They formed a rough circle around the city.

"Someone testing defenses," Adrian said slowly.

Leon glanced at him.

"Exactly."

Adrian straightened slightly, folding his arms as he considered the implications.

"They're probing both empires," he murmured. "Seeing how quickly we respond. Measuring resources."

Leon leaned one hand against the edge of the table.

"And once they know the response patterns," he said quietly, "they'll hit something bigger."

Adrian's eyes narrowed slightly.

"What's the target?"

Leon didn't answer immediately.

Instead he tapped another point on the map.

A large complex near the harbor lit up.

Adrian recognized it instantly.

The port.

Specifically the main container terminal used by both their organizations.

Adrian stared at the glowing marker.

"That's impossible," he said quietly.

Leon tilted his head slightly.

"Why?"

Adrian gestured toward the projection.

"That port moves half the illegal shipments in southern Europe. Weapons, drugs, counterfeit goods—everything. If someone attacked that place…"

Leon finished the sentence.

"…both our empires would suffer catastrophic losses."

Adrian ran a hand slowly across his jaw.

"And everyone would blame each other."

Leon nodded.

The realization hung heavily between them.

For the first time since waking up in the penthouse, Adrian felt the full weight of the situation pressing down on him. This wasn't just a betrayal within his family. It wasn't even just an attempted assassination.

It was a war being engineered.

Carefully.

Patiently.

And if Leon was right…

They had been walking straight into it.

Adrian exhaled slowly.

"So," he said, "your plan is to stop them."

Leon crossed his arms.

"My plan is to find them first."

Adrian studied the map again.

"How?"

Leon's gaze flicked toward him.

"By using you."

Adrian let out a short laugh.

"That's reassuring."

Leon ignored the sarcasm.

"Right now your family believes you've been kidnapped by me."

"Yes."

"They'll start mobilizing within hours."

Adrian nodded slightly.

"That's predictable."

Leon gestured toward the map again.

"And whoever betrayed you will be watching that reaction very carefully."

Adrian's eyes sharpened.

"They'll want confirmation the plan worked."

"Exactly."

Adrian leaned both hands against the edge of the table now, staring down at the glowing city projection.

"So what," he said slowly, "you want to bait them?"

Leon didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

Adrian looked up at him.

"How?"

Leon walked around the table until he stood directly across from Adrian again. The blue light from the projection cast faint shadows across both their faces.

"We leak information," Leon said calmly.

Adrian frowned slightly.

"What kind of information?"

Leon's voice dropped a little.

"Something only the traitor would care about."

Adrian's mind immediately began running through possibilities.

Movements of shipments.

Council decisions.

Security changes.

But Leon was already shaking his head.

"Not logistics," he said.

Adrian looked at him.

"Then what?"

Leon held his gaze.

"You."

The word landed with quiet certainty.

Adrian's jaw tightened again.

"You want to use me as bait."

"Yes."

Adrian leaned back slightly, crossing his arms again as he studied Leon's expression.

"That's a terrible plan."

Leon shrugged.

"It's effective."

Adrian shook his head once.

"No," he said calmly. "It's suicidal."

Leon didn't disagree.

"That depends."

"On what?"

Leon's eyes gleamed slightly.

"On how convincing we make it."

Adrian stared at him.

Then slowly, realization began to form.

"You want the traitor to think I'm still your prisoner."

Leon nodded.

"But vulnerable," Adrian added quietly.

Leon's smile widened slightly.

"Now you're getting it."

Adrian walked slowly around the table, thinking through the idea. His steps were unhurried, but the tension in his shoulders had returned.

"You realize," Adrian said, "if my uncle really is behind this… he won't hesitate."

Leon leaned casually against the table again.

"I'm counting on that."

Adrian stopped pacing and looked directly at him.

"That means he'll try to finish the job."

"Yes."

Adrian tilted his head slightly.

"And you're confident you can stop him."

Leon's gaze didn't waver.

"I'm confident we can."

For a moment the room went quiet again.

Adrian studied Leon's face carefully.

There was no arrogance there.

No bluff.

Just calculation.

And something else Adrian hadn't expected to see.

Trust.

Not complete trust, not blind faith—but the kind of strategic confidence one predator places in another when facing a bigger threat.

Adrian looked away first.

"This alliance," he said slowly, "ends the moment the traitor is exposed."

Leon nodded.

"Of course."

"And if you try to double-cross me—"

"I know."

Adrian glanced back at him.

Leon's expression remained calm.

"You'll kill me," Leon finished.

Adrian allowed the faintest hint of a smile.

"Exactly."

Leon pushed himself upright again.

"Good," he said.

Adrian frowned slightly.

"What?"

Leon gestured toward the door leading deeper into the penthouse.

"Because if we're going to stage a convincing kidnapping…"

He paused.

"…you're going to need a better place to sleep than that chair."

Adrian blinked once.

Then laughed.

The sound surprised both of them.

"Sleep?" Adrian said incredulously. "You think I'm sleeping here?"

Leon shrugged.

"You're not leaving."

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"You're confident about that."

Leon met his gaze steadily.

"Yes."

Adrian stared at him for several seconds.

Then he sighed.

"Fine," Adrian muttered.

Leon looked faintly pleased.

But Adrian wasn't finished.

"If I'm staying here," Adrian added calmly, "you're making coffee."

Leon blinked.

"Coffee?"

"Yes."

Leon stared at him like he'd lost his mind.

"You were kidnapped two hours ago."

"And now I'm awake," Adrian replied flatly.

Leon rubbed a hand across the back of his neck, looking briefly toward the ceiling like a man questioning every decision that led him to this moment.

Then he turned toward the kitchen area.

"You're unbelievable," Leon muttered.

Adrian leaned against the table again, watching him.

"You kidnapped me," Adrian reminded him.

Leon paused halfway to the coffee machine.

"That doesn't make you my guest."

Adrian smirked faintly.

"Too late."

Leon shook his head.

But he still started making the coffee.

Behind him, Adrian's gaze drifted back toward the glowing map hovering above the table.

The port marker pulsed quietly in blue light.

War was coming.

Of that much he was certain.

The only question now was whether the two men standing in that penthouse would stop it—

Or become the spark that ignited it.

And neither of them yet understood how dangerous their alliance was about to become.
