chapter 3

The cold wind blew across the riverbank.

The three men slowly walked closer.

Their footsteps echoed in the silent night.

Ethan stood in front of Lily, protecting her.

His heart was racing, but he refused to show fear.

"Stay behind me," he whispered.

Lily grabbed his arm tightly.

"No… Ethan, you don't understand. They're dangerous."

One of the men laughed.

"Look at this hero," he said sarcastically. "You think you can protect her?"

Ethan clenched his fists.

"What do you want from her?"

The tallest man stepped forward.

"We want what she took from us."

Ethan looked confused.

"Lily said she didn't steal anything."

The man smiled coldly.

"Of course she said that."

Lily suddenly shouted—

"I DIDN'T STEAL IT!"

Her voice trembled with anger and fear.

The men stopped for a moment.

Then the tall man said quietly,

"Then where is it?"

Lily stayed silent.

Ethan slowly turned toward her.

"Lily… what are they talking about?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

For the first time since they met…

She looked completely broken.

The Truth Begins

The men moved closer again.

"Enough talking," one of them said. "Bring her to the car."

Ethan stepped forward.

"No."

The men stopped.

"You're not taking her anywhere."

The tall man laughed.

"You're brave. But bravery won't save you."

Just as the men moved again—

Police sirens echoed in the distance.

The men cursed.

"Let's go!"

They quickly ran back to the black car and drove away into the darkness.

The riverbank became silent again.

Ethan slowly turned toward Lily.

"What is going on?"

Lily looked down.

Her hands were shaking.

"Ethan… I need to tell you the truth."

He waited.

The moment felt heavy.

Like the world had stopped moving.

Lily's Hidden Past

Lily took a deep breath.

"My real life isn't what you think."

Ethan frowned.

"What do you mean?"

She looked at the river.

"I didn't move to Riverdale for a new life."

"Then why did you come?"

Her voice became quiet.

"I was running."

Ethan felt a chill.

"Running from who?"

"The men you just saw."

Ethan's heart sank.

"Why?"

Lily hesitated.

Then she finally said it.

"Because my brother worked for them."

Ethan was shocked.

"Worked for them doing what?"

"Illegal business… money, secrets, things like that."

Ethan slowly realized the danger.

"And you?"

"I didn't know about it at first," she said quickly. "But one day I discovered everything."

She wiped tears from her face.

"My brother tried to leave their group."

"What happened?"

"They didn't let him."

Ethan could see the pain in her eyes.

"He disappeared," Lily whispered.

The wind moved softly across the river.

Ethan felt something terrible had happened.

"What does this have to do with you?"

Lily closed her eyes.

"Before he disappeared… he gave me something."

Ethan's heart beat faster.

"What?"

"A small flash drive."

Ethan looked surprised.

"What's on it?"

She looked straight into his eyes.

"Proof."

"Proof of what?"

"Everything they've done."

Ethan finally understood.

The men weren't chasing Lily because she stole something.

They were chasing her because she had something that could destroy them.

Why She Hid the Truth

Ethan looked at her silently.

"So… all this time you've been hiding from them?"

Lily nodded.

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Her voice broke.

"Because I didn't want you involved."

Ethan shook his head.

"But now I am involved."

Lily looked terrified.

"That's what I was afraid of."

She stepped closer to him.

"Ethan… you have to stay away from me."

His eyes widened.

"What?"

"You need to forget about me."

"No."

"They will hurt you if you stay with me."

Ethan grabbed her hands.

"I'm not leaving."

"Ethan please—"

"No."

His voice was firm.

"You think I'm going to walk away now?"

Lily's eyes filled with tears again.

"You don't understand how dangerous they are."

Ethan looked straight at her.

"Then we'll face it together."

For a moment, Lily just stared at him.

Then she whispered something that made Ethan's heart ache.

"You're the best thing that's ever happened to me."

The river flowed quietly beside them.

But deep in the darkness of the night…

Someone was watching.

Far away, inside a black car parked on a hill above the town.

The tall man from earlier looked through binoculars.

He smiled slowly.

"Well… looks like the boy knows the truth now."

Another man asked,

"What should we do?"

The tall man's smile turned cold.

"Now we take both of them."

The Danger Is Getting Closer

Ethan walked Lily back to her apartment.

But both of them knew something now.

Their fast love had turned into something dangerous.

Something bigger than they expected.

And the worst part?

The flash drive Lily carried could destroy powerful people.

Which meant those people would do anything to get it back.

Even if it meant destroying the two hearts that had just begun to fall in love.

As Ethan left the apartment building, he had a strange feeling.

Like someone was watching him.

But when he looked around…

The street was empty.

Or so it seemed.
