Chapter 31 - Chapter 22: The Guardian's Forbidden Promise.

The rooftop had become completely silent.

The black doorway stood behind Meera, its edges trembling like a wound in reality.

On the other side stood the mysterious figure wearing a silver crown.

And somewhere beyond that darkness, someone was laughing.

Rive recognized that laugh.

He had heard it countless times before.

During school days.

During arguments.

During moments when everything seemed perfectly normal.

Arin.

But the voice coming from beyond the doorway sounded different.

Colder.

Almost unfamiliar.

Rive slowly turned toward Vikram.

"Tell me that's not true."

Vikram remained silent.

Rive swallowed.

"Tell me you weren't ordered to kill me."

The Guardian of the Afterlife lowered his eyes.

"Rive…"

"No. Don't say my name like that. Just answer me."

For once, Vikram had no immediate response.

The crowned figure laughed softly.

"How disappointing. Your guardian cannot even tell you the truth."

Rive clenched his fists.

"Shut up. I'm not talking to you."

The figure tilted its head.

"Still the same. Even after everything, you haven't changed."

Rive looked back at Vikram.

"Explain."

Vikram finally spoke.

"Yes. I was given an order."

Rive felt something tighten inside him.

"What order?"

"To eliminate the Tri-Vessel Soul."

A long silence followed.

Rive looked down at his transparent hands.

Then he looked up again.

"So… you were supposed to kill me?"

"I was."

"And you didn't?"

"No."

"Why?"

Vikram looked directly into his eyes.

"Because the moment I met you, I realized you weren't a threat. You were a boy who had lost everything and didn't even understand why he was still existing."

Rive didn't respond.

Vikram continued.

"I was ordered to protect the balance between worlds. But somewhere along the way, I stopped seeing you as an assignment."

His voice softened.

"I started seeing you as someone I couldn't abandon."

For a moment, Rive forgot about the creature behind Meera.

He remembered the abandoned temple.

The Phantom Bazaar.

The countless times Vikram had stood between him and danger.

The training.

The arguments.

The ridiculous lectures.

And all the times Vikram had stayed when he could have walked away.

"You should've told me," Rive whispered.

"I know."

"You really should have."

"I know."

Rive looked away.

"I'm not sure whether I should be angry or grateful."

Vikram nodded.

"You have every right to be angry."

---

The crowned figure raised one hand.

"Beautiful. Truly beautiful."

A silver ring appeared beneath its feet.

"However, your little emotional reunion must end."

The rooftop began shaking.

The black doorway widened.

Something enormous moved behind it.

Meera suddenly grabbed her head.

"Stop…"

Her voice trembled.

"Please… stop…"

Rive turned toward her.

"Meera?"

She stumbled backward.

The silver light in her eyes flickered.

"It's coming back…"

Vikram immediately approached her.

"What's coming back?"

Meera looked at him.

"My memories."

---

Inside Meera's mind, a forgotten scene began unfolding.

A white room.

Three chairs.

Three small figures.

One boy.

One girl.

And another child whose face remained hidden.

A voice spoke from somewhere above them.

"The first vessel must be sealed."

The girl began crying.

"The second must be separated."

The boy reached for her hand.

"And the third must be sent beyond the sequence."

The room disappeared.

Meera opened her eyes.

She looked at Rive.

Then at Vikram.

"I remember now…"

Her voice was barely audible.

"I've seen you before."

Rive stepped closer.

"Where?"

Meera pointed toward him.

"Before you died."

Rive froze.

"What?"

"You were there. You and another boy."

Arin.

The name immediately entered Rive's mind.

Meera continued.

"You were standing beside a door. Someone was calling you from the other side."

Rive's thoughts raced.

"Was it Arin?"

Meera shook her head.

"I couldn't see his face."

"Then who was it?"

Meera looked toward the crowned figure.

"The first soul."

---

The crowned figure slowly stepped forward.

Its silver crown began glowing.

"Enough."

A wave of spiritual energy swept across the rooftop.

Vikram immediately raised a barrier.

"Rive! Take Meera and move!"

Rive grabbed her hand.

"Where?"

"Anywhere away from that doorway!"

"That's not a very specific direction!"

"JUST MOVE!"

Rive pulled Meera toward the opposite side of the rooftop.

But before they could escape, a dark chain shot through the air.

It wrapped around Vikram's arm.

The Guardian gritted his teeth.

"Rive!"

Rive turned.

The chain began pulling Vikram toward the doorway.

Rive immediately released Meera's hand.

"Hold on!"

He extended his palm.

The silver symbol appeared again.

Three circles.

One line.

A strange pressure gathered around his fingers.

The chain stopped.

For one brief second, Rive felt as though he could see every connection holding it together.

Then he closed his hand.

The chain disappeared.

Vikram fell forward.

Rive caught his arm.

"Are you okay?"

Vikram nodded.

"Barely."

Rive looked toward the doorway.

"I'm getting really tired of things trying to drag us into mysterious holes."

"Then stop standing near them."

"That's your advice?"

"It's a good start."

---

A familiar voice suddenly echoed through the doorway.

"Rive."

Everyone stopped.

Arin stepped out of the darkness.

His appearance had changed.

His clothes were darker, and strange silver markings covered his arms. His eyes carried a faint glow, while shadows moved around his feet like living creatures.

But his face was unmistakable.

Rive stared at him.

"Arin…"

Arin looked at him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Rive took a step forward.

"Where have you been?"

Arin smiled faintly.

"Somewhere you wouldn't understand."

"Try me."

Arin glanced at Vikram.

"I see you've found yourself another protector."

Vikram stepped forward.

"Stay away from him."

Arin laughed.

"Still giving orders?"

Rive raised his hand.

"Both of you, stop!"

He looked at Arin.

"Why are you here?"

Arin's expression changed.

"Because I finally found out what happened to us."

Rive felt his stomach tighten.

"What do you mean?"

Arin looked toward the crowned figure.

Then back at Rive.

"We weren't supposed to die."

The words struck harder than any attack.

Rive stared at him.

"What?"

Arin continued.

"Our deaths weren't accidents. Someone changed the sequence of events. Someone removed us from the path we were supposed to follow."

Rive remembered the forgotten archive.

The erased memories.

The mysterious door.

The voice that had called him the Third Vessel.

"Then who did it?"

Arin looked at the crowned figure.

"That thing."

The crowned figure didn't deny it.

Instead, it raised its hand and spoke calmly.

"Your deaths were necessary."

Arin's expression darkened.

"Necessary for what?"

The figure answered.

"To keep the first soul from returning."

---

A strange vibration travelled through the ground.

The crowned figure's silver light began fading.

Behind it, the darkness opened wider.

For a brief moment, Rive saw something beyond the doorway.

Not a city.

Not another world.

A vast empty space filled with thousands of floating doors.

Some were broken.

Some were sealed.

And some were slowly opening.

At the center stood an enormous throne.

Someone was sitting on it.

Rive couldn't see the person's face.

But he could feel its presence.

The figure on the throne raised its head.

Every door in the distance began shaking.

Meera fell to her knees.

Vikram immediately turned toward her.

"Meera!"

She looked at Rive with frightened eyes.

"Don't let him open the last door."

"Who?"

She pointed toward Arin.

Rive turned.

Arin was holding the silver key.

The same key that had opened the Forgotten Door.

Rive stared at him.

"Arin… where did you get that?"

Arin looked down at the key.

Then back at Rive.

"I didn't take it."

He slowly opened his other hand.

A second silver key rested in his palm.

"I was given another one."

The crowned figure smiled.

"Now you understand."

Rive stepped forward.

"No. I understand nothing!"

The figure extended both hands.

"One key belongs to the Third Vessel."

"The other belongs to the Second."

Rive looked at Arin.

Arin looked back.

And suddenly, both keys began glowing.

Vikram's expression changed.

"Rive… don't let them touch."

But it was already too late.

The keys rose into the air.

Their silver light connected.

A third symbol appeared between them.

Three circles.

One line.

And a name written beneath it.

THE FIRST SOUL.

A voice emerged from the endless darkness.

Not the crowned figure.

Not Arin.

Not Meera.

Something much older.

"My children… you've finally found the way back."

The crowned figure slowly bowed.

And for the first time, Rive understood something terrifying.

The being behind the door wasn't trying to enter their world.

It was waiting for them to open the way.

Vikram grabbed Rive's shoulder.

"Whatever you hear next, remember this…"

Rive turned toward him.

Vikram's voice trembled.

"The first soul isn't a monster we need to defeat."

He looked toward the throne.

"It's the reason the dead world exists."

The silver keys suddenly shattered into light.

And every door beyond the darkness opened at once.
