Chapter 5 - chapter 5

The morning sunlight filtered through Lily's LA apartment, spilling over the pages of her script. She sat cross-legged on her bed, coffee in hand, rereading lines for the day's scene. Her thoughts, however, kept drifting back to last night—Ethan's hand brushing hers, the near-kiss at her doorstep.

She shook her head. "Focus, Lily," she muttered to herself. "You're an actress. You can't let some… writer mess with your head."

A knock at her door made her jump.

It was her roommate, Emma, holding a tray of breakfast pastries.

"You look like you just survived a romantic movie," Emma teased, setting down the tray. "Did you guys…?"

Lily rolled her eyes, but a small smile tugged at her lips. "It's not like that."

Emma raised an eyebrow, smirking knowingly. "Uh-huh. Sure. Just don't let him distract you today—you've got a tricky scene to nail."

Lily groaned. "I know. But I can't stop thinking about last night."

Emma shrugged. "Good distraction, then. Go get him, actress girl."

By the time she arrived at the Sunset Romance studio, the buzz of activity had already begun. Crew members moved cameras and lights; assistants scurried with coffee trays and scripts. Lily's auburn hair was loosely tied back, and she had chosen a soft blue dress, simple yet flattering.

Max waved from across the set. "Morning, Hayes. You look… rested. Ready for chaos?"

"Always," Lily replied, though the flutter in her chest betrayed her nerves. She scanned the set. Ethan was already there, hunched over a laptop, scribbling notes with that familiar intense focus.

Their eyes met briefly. He gave a small, almost imperceptible nod, and a tiny spark of thrill ran through her.

The first scene of the day was a difficult one: Lynette confronting Max's character about a misunderstanding. Lily had to convey anger, frustration, and vulnerability—all in one take.

As she prepared, Ethan appeared at her side, holding a printed page. "Mind if I give you a tip?" he asked, leaning close.

She felt his breath brush her ear, and a shiver ran down her spine. "Fine," she said, trying to keep her voice steady.

"Imagine Max isn't just your co-star," he said softly, his tone low and intimate. "Imagine he's someone you really care about, and you're trying to protect yourself from getting hurt."

Lily's lips twitched in a smile, and she had to force herself not to glance at him too long. "Protect myself, got it."

When the director called "action," Lily moved with intention, letting Ethan's words guide her. Her anger was sharp, her frustration real, and the vulnerability beneath it made the scene crackle. She saw Max's character react, and suddenly, it felt alive.

Cut. Rachel clapped. "Finally! That was authentic. Excellent, Lily."

She exhaled, heart still racing, and glanced at Ethan. He gave her a small thumbs-up, grinning. His confidence in her made her chest swell—and made her cheeks warm in ways she wasn't ready to admit.

During lunch break, Ethan appeared at the set with a takeout coffee cup. "Thought you might need a pick-me-up," he said, holding it out to her.

She accepted it, feeling the warmth of the cup seep into her hands. "You spoil me," she said lightly, though her smile betrayed her amusement.

"Just paying you back for letting me ruin your rehearsal yesterday," he said with a playful grin.

Lily rolled her eyes, laughing softly. "I'll never live that down, huh?"

"Not a chance," he said, leaning in slightly. Their proximity made her pulse quicken, and for a moment, the studio around them seemed to fade.

They sat together, sipping coffee and sharing small talk about music, movies, and past acting blunders. Lily found herself relaxing, laughing more freely than she had in weeks.

The afternoon brought a more physical scene—a playful mishap with props that required careful timing. Lily was supposed to stumble slightly, spilling a stack of fake books, and Ethan, sensing her tension, whispered encouragement.

"Don't overthink it," he murmured, his hand brushing hers briefly as he adjusted a prop. Sparks shot through her at the contact.

She took a deep breath, nodded, and nailed the scene. The spill looked chaotic but believable, and the director's laugh confirmed her success.

After the scene, Ethan leaned closer. "See? Messy can be perfect."

Lily smirked, brushing her hair behind her ear. "You make it sound so easy."

"Easy isn't the point," he said softly. "Real is."

When the day ended, Ethan walked her to her car. The LA night was warm, the city lights reflecting softly on the pavement. Lily's heart was still racing from the close calls and playful touches throughout the day.

As they reached her car, Ethan moved just a little closer. His hand brushed lightly against her lower back, resting gently on her waist—not enough to be overt, but enough to send a jolt of warmth through her. She froze for a heartbeat, her pulse quickening at the intimacy of the gesture.

Ethan's other hand went to the car door, opening it for her with smooth, practiced ease. "Ladies first," he said softly, his voice low and teasing, but there was something in his eyes that made her stomach flutter.

She stepped in, catching his gaze for just a moment. There was a tension there—a quiet spark—that neither of them moved to dispel. Her fingers tingled from where his hand had brushed her, and she felt an almost dizzying pull toward him.

"Goodnight, Lily," he said, leaning just enough to let her see the warmth and restraint in his eyes.

"Goodnight… Ethan," she whispered, her voice soft, almost breathless.

He stepped back, leaving her to slide into the car, but the spark lingered. Long after he drove away, Lily could still feel it—an electric memory she knew would keep her thinking about him all night.

Once inside her apartment, Lily sank onto the couch, her script untouched. All she could think about was the day—the small touches, the playful banter, the electric moments of closeness. Every glance, every brush of skin, seemed to echo in her mind.

She smiled, her heart still fluttering. Tomorrow, the filming would continue. Lines would need memorizing, emotions delivered, and cameras navigated. But tonight… tonight belonged entirely to the memory of Ethan.

And she couldn't wait to see him again.
