CHAPTER ONE: THE WEDDING

The heat smelled of diesel and jasmine, and Zayn ul-Abidin Rai was trying not to think about endings.
He stood at the edge of his family's mango orchard, beyond the tent's canvas walls where three hundred guests sweated through his cousin's wedding festivities. His shalwar kameez clung to his back—cotton, white, embroidered at the collar with green thread his mother had chosen because "green is the color of paradise, beta, and you need all the help you can get." From here, he could hear the dhol's bass thump, the singer's autotuned wailing, his aunties' collective laughter like crows arguing over carrion. The wedding was going well. The wedding was always going well. Rafiq, his cousin, the groom, had finally stopped vomiting and started accepting congratulations. But this one, this particular tree with its branches heavy and low enough to touch, had been planted in 1978. Zayn knew because he'd helped his grandfather dig the hole, though he'd been six years old and mostly useless, dropping clods of earth on his own feet, asking why they couldn't buy mangoes from the bazaar like normal people.
"Because," his grandfather had said, wiping sweat from his white beard, "a man who buys what he can grow is a man who has forgotten his hands. And a man who forgets his hands has forgotten his soul."
Zayn had not understood then. He understood now, perhaps too well, which was why he couldn't go back to the tent, why he couldn't smile at cousins and aunts and the matchmakers who materialized like vultures whenever an unmarried man stood still too long. He understood that his hands had forgotten soil. That he'd spent six years in Lahore learning Python and Java and C++, languages his grandfather couldn't pronounce, building things that existed only in electricity, in the invisible architecture of the internet.

His father had not spoken to him for three days after the announcement. Not anger. Disappointment deeper than anger, the kind that settled in bone and stayed there.
You will farm, his father had said. Not asked. Stated, as if naming a law of physics.
I will code, Zayn had replied, and the silence that followed had lasted six years.
They spoke now, of course. Functional communication. Crop prices and weather forecasts and the health of his mother's blood pressure. But the silence remained, a third presence in every conversation, the ghost of expectation unfulfilled.
The mango hung at eye level. Perfectly ripe. Zayn could see the slight give of flesh against the stem, the translucence of skin that meant sweetness waiting. The cigarette finally lit.

"I am an adult," Zayn said, not moving.
"You are a ghost." Farzana approached, wrinkling her nose at the cigarette. "Those will kill you."
"Eventually."
"Zayn." She used the tone that meant I am serious now, brother, listen to me. "I know you don't want to be here. I know you think you're too good for us now, with your Lahore job and your English friends and your—" she gestured at him, vaguely, encompassing everything she couldn't name "—your distance. But this is Rafiq's day. And Ami is stressed. And if you don't come inside and help, I will tell everyone you have a girlfriend in Lahore."
"I don't have a girlfriend in Lahore."
"I will invent one. Her name will be Fatima. She will be a dancer. A modern dancer." Farzana smiled, the expression that had always gotten her what she wanted from their father, from their teachers, from Zayn himself. "Come. Please. For me."
Zayn looked at the mango. At the smoke. At his sister's face, which he loved with the particular intensity of someone who had chosen isolation and occasionally regretted it.
"Five minutes," he said.
"Three."
"Four, and I get to choose which aunties I speak to."
"Done." Farzana grabbed his arm, pulling him toward the tent. "And put out that cigarette. You smell like a factory."

The tent was a universe of heat and sound and smell.
Three hundred guests, perhaps more—Rai family loyalty extended to third cousins and fourth connections, to business partners and political allies and the vague category of "people who might be useful someday." The men occupied the eastern half, seated on white plastic chairs arranged in rows that faced a stage where the singer continued his autotuned lament. The women were invisible behind a partition, but their presence was audible, a higher frequency of conversation, laughter, the occasional shriek of a child escaping maternal supervision.
Zayn moved through it like a ghost, as Farzana had accused. Nodding at cousins he didn't recognize. Accepting handshakes from uncles who asked about his job, his salary, his marital status. The biryani crisis had been resolved, apparently. The caterer—thin man with a mustache that screamed I take myself seriously—was serving from massive steel pots, his assistants slapping rice and meat onto paper plates with the efficiency of assembly lines. Zayn's grandfather had allowed many things. "Zayn beta!"
His mother. She was fifty-three, looked sixty-three, worked like she was thirty-three. Her shalwar kameez was green, matching his collar embroidery, and her smile was genuine but exhausted.
"You found him," she said to Farzana, then to Zayn: "Come. The photographer wants family pictures. Your father is—" she paused, finding the right word "—unavailable. You will stand in his place."
"I am not the head of the family, Ami."
"You are his representative. Come." She took his arm, the same spot Farzana had grabbed, but gentler, more insistent. "And fix your hair. You look like a refugee."
Zayn touched his hair—black, uncut for three months, falling across his forehead in a way that his manager in Lahore had called "unprofessional" and his colleagues had called "artistic." There was no fixing it. There was only the appearance of trying, which he performed for his mother's benefit.
The photographer was young, maybe twenty, with a DSLR camera that cost more than Zayn's monthly salary. He arranged the Rai men in tiers—elders seated, middle generation standing, children on the ground or held in arms. Zayn was placed in the second row, between an uncle he didn't know and a cousin who smelled of whiskey hidden in Sprite, exactly as he'd predicted.

"I'll look at it," Zayn said.

He walked away from the tent. Not toward the orchard—he knew better than to return to that symbolism, that temptation toward melancholy. The road was dirt, packed hard by decades of carts and cars and feet. He walked slowly, cigarette lit again—his third, or fourth, he'd lost count—enjoying the darkness, the relative cool, the absence of human voice.
His phone buzzed. A notification from the taxi app. Some driver in Karachi having trouble with the GPS algorithm. Zayn ignored it. He was not working now. He was present, in Kot Addu, at his cousin's wedding, walking a road his grandfather had walked, smelling diesel and jasmine and his own sweat.
The light came without warning.
Not from above. Not from the phone, which died instantly, screen going black, notification silenced mid-vibration. Not from any source Zayn could identify. The light simply replaced—the road, the tent in the distance, the stars overhead, all removed in an instant of absolute white.
Zayn had time for one thought: The generator exploded.

Nineteen others. He counted automatically, the way he counted variables in code, ensuring completeness. Nineteen shapes that resolved, slowly, into people. Or person-equivalents.
A woman with compound eyes, multifaceted, reflecting the white into rainbow shards. A man whose skin moved like water, rippling, never still. A child—appearing child, possibly ancient—emitting sounds that his ears heard as static but his brain wanted to interpret as language. Others more human: Chinese, European, African, combinations that suggested generations of migration and mixing.
They were all breathing hard. Or breathing equivalent. The compound-eyed woman screamed, a frequency that made Zayn's teeth ache, his vision strobe. The water-man collapsed, becoming literally fluid, spreading across the non-floor. The child emitted electromagnetic pulses that Zayn felt as pressure behind his eyes, though he had no reason to identify the sensation as electromagnetic.
Panic, he thought. Educational. He felt it in his own chest, the familiar weight, the adrenaline cascade that his body executed without his permission. But he did not express it. Had learned, years ago, that expression was performance, and performance was vulnerability.
He looked at the white.
It had texture. Not smooth. Not rough. Patterned—like code he didn't yet know, like a language's rhythm before understanding words. The white was information. The white was waiting.
The voice spoke directly into his skull, bypassing ears entirely, and Zayn ul-Abidin Rai, third son of Kot Addu, understood that his life had been preparation for this moment. Not the coding.
