Chapter 6 - Chapter 6

"So, since you all managed to destroy Veronica's favorite dessert," Anika announced with mock severity, arms crossed, "you're going to make it up to her. Starting now—with a full princess treatment and a grand tour of her room."

"It was Dad's fa—"

"If you finish that sentence," Renae's dad cut in, raising an eyebrow, "I'll introduce your face to my green armpit."

Renae recoiled instantly, face twisted in horror. "Ew! Gross!"

"Mom! It was Dad's faaaaault!" she shrieked, bolting from the kitchen as her dad chased after her.

Anika and I burst into laughter, nearly doubling over as Renae's cries echoed down the hallway.

"Mommm! Dad's trying to kill your only egg! Heeelllppp!"

"Dad! Get off me! You're the one who burned the cookies!"

We rounded the corner—and froze.

Renae was pinned to the couch, her dad looming over her like a deranged wrestler. One arm was wrapped around her shoulders in a playful headlock, the other raised high in theatrical menace.

"Take it back!" he demanded, grinning like a lunatic.

"Never!" Renae yelled, wriggling beneath him. "You set the timer! You said, 'I got this!'"

"And you distracted me with your 'Oh, I'm seeing the light—hold me—remember?' nonsense! Admit it! It was a team failure!"

"Then suffer the wrath of the Green Pit of Doom!" he declared, lifting his arm and shoving her face toward his armpit.

"NOOOOOO!" Renae wailed. "MOM! VERONICA! HELP! I'M BEING SMOTHERED BY BROCCOLI-SCENTED DEATH!"

Veronica started laughing so hard tears streamed down her cheeks. "Is this… normal?"

"Unfortunately," Anika muttered, striding forward.

"Alright, that's enough!" she snapped, though her eyes sparkled with amusement. "Off my couch before I call the real authorities."

Renae's dad froze mid-hold. "But babe—"

"Don't 'babe' me. You're sweating on my throw pillows."

Renae peeked out from under his arm, hair wild, cheeks flushed. "Tell him it was his fault!"

Anika raised a brow. "I don't care whose fault it was. What I care about is that my couch doesn't end up smelling like gym socks and roadkill."

I snorted.

With a dramatic sigh, Renae's dad released her and flopped onto the floor. "Fine. Truce. We both burned the cookies."

"Victory!" Renae whooped, launching a pillow at him before collapsing beside him in a heap.

Anika shook her head, hands on her hips. "You two are banned from the couch for the rest of the day. And if you don't show Veronica her room, bathe, and come back down here like civilized human beings for lunch, I swear—those cookies won't be the only things dead in this house. Got it?"

Their eyes widened in mock terror. They leapt to their feet and saluted.

"Yes, Your Majesty the Queen!" they shouted in unison.

"I'm counting to three," Anika warned, slipping off one of her sandals with ominous precision.

"Three—"

"Renae, move! If I don't get cuddles tonight, it's on you!" her dad barked, nudging her aside.

"Two—"

"Hold up! First of all—eww, Dad. Just… ew. Second, no cuddles!"

"What do you mean 'ew'?!" he shot back. "If it weren't for my cuddles, you wouldn't even be here, you little demon!"

"If I go to college and come back to find another mini demon spawned from Mom's egg and your balls, I'm burning this whole damn freaking place down," Renae threatened.

"Language!" Anika warned.

"One!" she shouted, sandal raised like a weapon.

"Oh, shit! Mama Bear's angry! Code Red! I repeat—Code Red! Abort mission!" Renae's dad yelled, scooping me up and sprinting down the hall with Renae hot on his heels.

We burst from the living room into the hallway, where sunlight streamed through tall windows at the far end, casting golden light across the dark espresso floors. The contrast of soft ivory walls and crisp white wainscoting gave the space a timeless elegance, while crown molding traced the ceiling like a delicate frame.

A large black planter filled with tall snake plants stood proudly to one side, beneath a round gold-framed mirror that caught the light and movement of the house. A sleek console table sat below it, decorated with framed family photos, gold candlesticks, and a vase of fresh white blooms—each piece a quiet testament to love and memory.

Sliding barn doors with matte black handles lined one wall, leading to hidden rooms and cozy nooks like the kitchen and the living room we'd just escaped. Their rustic charm played beautifully against the hallway's clean lines. At the far end, a staircase with dark railings curved upward, inviting us to explore.

Upstairs, the hallway opened beneath a vaulted ceiling, arched like a cathedral. Recessed lighting and ceiling fixtures bathed the space in a warm, ambient glow that shifted with the time of day. Creamy beige walls, trimmed in white, were lined with framed portraits, candid snapshots, and bursts of abstract art.

One wall featured a wave-textured panel lit by embedded spotlights, adding a modern twist. Opposite it, five doors stood in a neat row—each one a gateway to a different world. A console table beneath another gold-framed mirror held more greenery, more photos, more warmth. Woven baskets and a tall potted plant softened the corners, while a small wooden table and chair tucked into a nook offered a quiet space for journaling or midnight chats.

Purple LED strip lights traced the ceiling's edge, subtle by day but promising magic by night—perfect for whispered secrets and barefoot wanderings.

"Cover your eyes!" Renae squealed, tying a cloth around my face. "We want to surprise you!"

I giggled as she led me forward, her excitement practically vibrating through her grip. We stopped. I heard keys jingle.

"Okay," she said, practically bouncing. "We poured our hearts into this room—Dad's wallet, my imagination, and Mom's decorating genius."

"Surprise!!!" they all shouted as the door swung open.

Anika stepped forward, holding a Black Forest cake with thick icing that read: WELCOME TO OUR FAMILY, VERONICA.

Tears welled in my eyes. I covered my mouth, overwhelmed by the room, the gesture, the laughter, the chaos, the love.

From the moment I walked through their door to this very second, I felt it.

I had finally found home.
