Chapter 7 - Contract #2

They wake up for the second time that day, and Tussle is promptly greeted by a very loud "FUCK".

"Well, hello to you, too, princess. What's wrong?" He knows exactly what's wrong. He chose the Asylum.

Out of the actually large maps, there is the Airport, the Asylum, the Hospital, and the School. The smallest is actually the Asylum, albeit it's still confusing because of the various wings and different rooms involved. He chose it specifically to add some challenge and hopefully get a hunt before the kids can figure out the ghost.

That ghoul only got smudged in the face because he stuck around waiting for it.

He is not a patient man, he has never been a patient man, and he never will be a patient man. He loves to get things done and get them done fast.

A lot can happen in five seconds.

"WHY ARE WE AT AN ASYLUM?!"

Maybe this is why Snow barely talks. The guy's got vocal strength for days.

"Because it's a larger map. We already did the biggest house, so why not the smallest large map? Especially since it's fitting for the vibes. You guys were gonna get this regardless, but I'm not the one who demanded we do more contracts sooner."

Snow throws a smudge at him. Given it's dried herbs tied into bundles with twine, it's not particularly dangerous to throw. Wonderful self-control, truly.

"Get it out of your system now, because the part you excelled at before is about to be ten times as difficult. Let's see you lot find the ghost when you can't even find the breaker with the map."

~

They find the breaker with the map. Mostly because Snow apparently can memorize something like that in a short amount of time, so he just walks straight to it. Regardless, Tussle gets his wish for a more difficult contract to properly throw these noobs in the deep end.

Firstly, Sparky gets lost. She finds the ghost's area, a small hallway section it is hanging around in, pacing back and forth over the same spots and freaking her out with how much the EMF goes off. Good news is that they get the highest EMF, which is evidence.

Bad news is that she dies from a hunt before they find where she is.

Second obstacle is that Thrasher, left alone with the spirit box and UV and a few items scattered to get interactions. There's also five piles of rock salt, meant to show him where the ghost is moving around, so he can check for footprints and has another opportunity to get UV.

"Spirit box!" comes the shout... and then there's the crackling of a hunt messing with the radios.

Good news: Snow gets EVP while Tussle goes in.

Bad news: Thrasher down.

"Alright, this is either a yurei or a revenant. I've got the camera set-up. Make sure you keep an eye out for if it seems to have any issues moving around."

The hunt starts, and, as he expected, a yurei.

He doesn't say that, but he stands just outside the camera's view - conveniently also outside the ghost's space - and just... chills. Meanwhile, the ghost starts pacing in tight motions, patrolling from one side to the other, back and forth, until it's made a complete loop and starts over.

A few items throw themselves at him, and given the yurei is ignoring him, he assumes the ghosts of his interns have figured out they can pick things up.

"Yeah, yeah, I didn't say anything, but this is the stuff you learn from experience. Such a small space for it, when it's practically walking the same line, is pretty much indicating it isn't a normal ghost. If you either get no interaction or all the interaction, you limit the options pretty quick." The hunt ends, so he starts to walk back, only pausing to wave his hand in front of the camera to show Snow he's alive.

"Now, if we were in a no-evidence contract, the ghost would only be figured out through stuff like that. Right now, we got evidence. In the future, and make sure to tell Snow this, too, you should find a hiding spot that breaks line-of-sight for the ghost. They got low object permanence, so they won't find you if they lose sight of you for even a moment and you use that moment to hide properly."

He doesn't know why they didn't realize this. After all, he did make it clear that ghouls have a tell, so why would other spirits not have ones?

Whatever.

Good news: Snow is alive, which is more than expected.

Bad news: He nearly gave the intern a heart attack when he waved his hand in front of the lens.

He laughs as he settles down for the ride home, waiting for the interns to finish learning communication from the other side. They're having fun, and learning that this is something they can do means that they'll eventually learn how to use it.

All he has to do is make sure they don't suffocate him in his sleep before they graduate.
