Chapter 1 - …Do You Want To Go Home?

The hospital hallway smelled faintly of antiseptic and rain.

Raxian had started noticing that smell sometime around the third day.

By the seventh, it had become familiar.

Routine.

The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime and he stepped out into the quiet corridor, hands shoved deep into his jacket pockets. The nurses at the station barely looked up anymore.

They knew him.

One of them smiled faintly.

"Back again."

Raxian gave a small nod.

They had started calling him the regular two days ago.

He didn't mind.

He walked the same route he had walked every afternoon that week, past the same doors, the same muted lighting, until he reached the room at the end of the hall.

For a moment he stopped outside it.

His fingers hovered over the door handle.

The same small pause he always took.

Just to make sure—

To make sure she was still there.

Then he opened the door.

Sable was standing.

Well.

Trying to.

Her hand was gripping the edge of the hospital bed, legs trembling slightly as she shifted her weight forward. The first few days she hadn't been able to stand at all. Now she could manage a few careful steps before the weakness caught up with her.

She didn't notice him immediately.

Her concentration was fixed on her feet.

One step.

Then another.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Raxian leaned against the doorframe, watching quietly.

She made it two steps before her balance wavered.

His body moved before he even thought about it.

He crossed the room in two strides and caught her arm just as she tipped forward.

Sable let out a small breath through her nose.

"I had it."

"You didn't."

She glanced sideways at him.

"…I almost did."

"Almost counts as falling."

For a second, something faint flickered in her expression.

The smallest hint of amusement.

He guided her carefully back toward the bed, keeping one hand steady at her elbow until she sat down again. Even that short walk had drained the color from her face.

Raxian crouched slightly in front of her.

"You shouldn't push it."

"You said that yesterday."

"And you ignored it yesterday."

"And today."

She leaned back against the pillows, eyes briefly closing.

When she opened them again, they settled on him.

"You left school early again."

He didn't answer.

She didn't push.

They had already had that conversation three times.

The nurses had told her.

Apparently half the staff in the building knew his schedule by now.

A quiet moment settled between them.

Then Sable reached out.

Her fingers brushed lightly against the center of his chest.

Over his heart.

Raxian stilled.

For a moment, the pulse in his chest echoed inside her own.

It was subtle.

Almost imperceptible.

But she felt it.

The steady rhythm.

Warm.

Stable.

Her shoulders relaxed slightly as the tension left her body.

Raxian watched her carefully.

"You okay?"

Sable nodded once.

Then she leaned forward.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Until her forehead rested lightly against his chest.

He froze for half a second before instinct took over.

His arms wrapped around her automatically.

Gentle.

Careful not to squeeze too tightly.

She stayed like that for several seconds, breathing steady against him.

Listening.

Then—

A knock.

Both of them looked toward the door.

The handle turned.

William stepped inside.

He stopped immediately when he saw them.

For a moment, no one spoke.

William's gaze moved quickly over Sable, taking in every detail: the pale skin, the faint bruising still visible near her wrist.

Something in his expression cracked.

"Sable—"

He crossed the room before he finished the word.

And pulled her into a hug.

Hard.

Sudden.

Desperate.

Sable stiffened.

Not from fear.

From surprise.

Her arms hovered awkwardly at her sides.

Her father hadn't hugged her like this since she was a child.

William didn't seem to notice.

His hands were shaking slightly where they gripped her shoulders.

"You're okay… you're okay…"

His voice was quieter than she had ever heard it.

Almost breaking.

Sable blinked slowly.

Then, unsure what else to do, she lifted one hand and awkwardly patted his back.

"…Hi, Dad."

William let out a shaky breath that sounded halfway between a laugh and a sob.

"God… I was worried."

He pulled back slightly, running a hand through his hair like he was trying to collect himself again.

It didn't quite work.

His composure was still cracked around the edges.

Sable studied him for a moment.

Then her eyes drifted toward Raxian.

He was standing a few steps away now, giving them space.

Watching quietly.

William noticed the glance.

He followed it.

Something unreadable passed through his expression before he looked back at Sable.

"…Do you want to go home?"

He didn't say it like an order.

He said it like a question.

Careful.

As if he didn't quite feel like he had the right to assume.

Sable hesitated.

Home.

She thought about it.

About the quiet apartment.

About the conversations that needed to happen.

About the things her father had never told her.

Then her gaze shifted again.

Back to Raxian.

Just for a second.

William saw it.

And understood.

Sable slid carefully off the bed.

Her legs were steadier than they had been a few minutes ago.

She walked toward Raxian slowly.

He stepped forward instinctively to meet her.

She didn't say anything.

She just wrapped her arms around him.

Weak.

But tight.

Her face buried itself against his chest again.

And once more, she listened.

Heartbeat.

Pulse.

Steady.

Safe.

The resonance between them hummed softly beneath the surface.

Then she lifted her head slightly.

Just enough to meet his eyes.

And kissed him.

Raxian didn't hesitate.

His hand came up to the back of her neck automatically, pulling her closer as he returned it.

When they finally pulled apart, Sable rested her forehead lightly against his.

"…Call me soon?"

His answer came immediately.

"Yeah."

No hesitation.

Not even a second.

Sable nodded once.

Then she stepped back.

William waited quietly by the door.

Watching both of them.

Sable turned toward him again.

And together they walked out of the room.

Raxian stayed behind for a moment.

Standing in the quiet.

Listening to the echo of her pulse that still lingered faintly in his chest.

Outside the window, the city moved like nothing had changed.

But something had.

And somewhere far away—

A system had already noticed.
