Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Shadows Closing In

Daniel couldn't shake the feeling of eyes on him. Kael's cryptic guidance had left more questions than answers, and Mara's suspicion hung over him like a storm cloud, unrelenting.

A sharp knock at the door made them both freeze. Daniel's heart hammered in his chest. He approached cautiously. Nothing. Then, a soft rustle near the base of the door caught his attention—an envelope had slid inside.

He picked it up, hands trembling. On the front, in sharp, precise handwriting, were three words that made his stomach knot:

"You are being watched."

Mara's eyes narrowed, a flash of steel in her gaze. "They've noticed us," she whispered. "Every move we make now… it's a trap waiting to spring."

Inside the envelope were photographs: corners of the streets they had walked, shadowy figures lingering near safehouses, and faint images of themselves, unguarded, unaware. Someone had tracked them. Someone close enough to anticipate their every move.

Daniel's throat tightened. "They're closer than we thought. And Kael… can we trust him? Or is he part of this too?"

Mara grabbed his arm, her grip firm and unyielding. "We don't have the luxury of trust. We follow his guidance… but carefully.

Every step, every choice, must be calculated. Slip once, and they won't hesitate to strike."

Outside, the fog rolled through the streets like a living thing, curling around lampposts, alleyways, and abandoned buildings.

Shadows shifted and moved in the mist—indistinct, silent, and patient. The city itself seemed complicit, alive with unseen threats.

Daniel's thoughts snapped to Emily.

Somewhere out there, she was enduring horrors he could barely imagine. And now, with every step he took, they were closing the net—not around the hunters, but around him and Mara.

He clenched his fists, teeth gritted. "We have to be smarter. Faster. More careful than ever. I won't let them take anyone else from me—not Emily, not anyone."
