Chapter 1 - The Spider Guardian [S01;C01]

The Spider Guardian

Season:01

Chapter:01

[The Merchant's Project]

The day began like any other ordinary school day.

Morning sunlight poured through the tall classroom windows, warming the dusty wooden desks where students sat chatting, laughing, and waiting for the first class to begin. The sound of pages turning and quiet conversations filled the air.

Haiyan sat with his friends near the back of the classroom. Nothing about the morning suggested that something unusual was about to happen.

But within a few hours, everything would change.

Around mid-morning, their teacher walked into the classroom carrying a file and wearing an expression that instantly caught everyone's attention. He cleared his throat and looked at the students carefully.

"Today," he said, "a special guest has arrived in our town."

The room became quiet.

"A wealthy merchant," the teacher continued, "has started building a large project here. He has invited several schools to come and see the progress of his work. Our school has been selected to send a small group of students."

Immediately whispers spread through the classroom.

A project? A rich merchant? What kind of project?

The teacher began reading a list of names.

When he called Haiyan, he looked up in surprise. A few of his close friends were also on the list.

Excitement quickly replaced curiosity.

For students, leaving school during class hours always felt like a small adventure.

Within an hour, Haiyan and the selected students were standing outside the school gate waiting for a vehicle that would take them to the project site.

A black van soon arrived.

The students climbed inside, still talking excitedly about what they might see. Some imagined a technology center, others thought it might be a factory or a research laboratory.

But Haiyan remained quiet.

He didn't know why, but something about the invitation felt strange.

The van drove for nearly thirty minutes before finally stopping near a large fenced area at the edge of the town.

The moment they stepped out, the first thing they noticed was the size of the place.

Tall metal fences surrounded the entire compound. Large gates stood guarded by security personnel wearing dark uniforms.

Inside the gate, several unfinished buildings rose toward the sky. Heavy machines moved slowly across the ground, carrying steel beams and containers.

But what truly caught Haiyan's attention was the silence.

For such a massive construction site, it felt strangely quiet.

As the students walked through the gate with their guide, they finally saw the man everyone had been talking about.

The merchant.

He stood near the entrance of the main building wearing a long coat and a tall black hat. His appearance was elegant, almost theatrical.

When he noticed the students approaching, he smiled warmly.

"Welcome," he said.

His voice was calm and smooth.

"I am glad your school accepted my invitation. The future is being built here, and young minds like yours deserve to see it."

The students looked around in awe.

Screens were mounted on the walls displaying moving diagrams and digital models. Some rooms contained large machines connected to glowing control panels.

It looked like something out of a science fiction movie.

The merchant explained that his project was meant to create something revolutionary—something that could change the way technology worked in the future.

Most of the students listened with excitement.

But Haiyan was watching something else.

The workers.

None of them spoke.

None of them smiled.

They moved quickly, silently, as if they had been instructed not to interact with anyone.

Haiyan also noticed that several areas of the facility were completely blocked off.

Large metal doors.

Warning signs.

Security cameras pointed directly at them.

One of Haiyan's friends leaned closer and whispered, "Why would a project demonstration have so many restricted areas?"

Haiyan didn't answer.

Instead, he kept observing.

They were led through several rooms showing different parts of the project.

Robotic equipment.

Strange mechanical devices.

Large containers marked with codes instead of names.

Everything looked impressive.

But the deeper they went into the building, the more uncomfortable Haiyan began to feel.

At one point, they passed a hallway where a heavy door was partially open.

For just a second, Haiyan glanced inside.

What he saw made his heart skip.

Rows of unusual devices.

Machines he couldn't understand.

And something else—

Armed guards.

The door quickly closed before he could look longer.

The tour continued, but Haiyan's excitement had completely disappeared.

Something about this place felt wrong.

When the group finally gathered again in the main hall, the merchant thanked them for visiting.

"I hope what you saw today inspires you," he said with a polite smile.

"Great inventions often begin with curiosity."

The students thanked him and prepared to leave.

But as Haiyan walked toward the exit, he felt a strange sensation.

Like someone watching him.

He turned around.

The merchant was looking directly at him.

Their eyes met for only a moment.

The merchant's smile remained the same.

But this time, Haiyan noticed something different.

It wasn't a friendly smile.

It was the kind of smile someone gives when they know something others don't.

Something hidden.

Something dangerous.

Outside the building, Haiyan's friends began talking excitedly again.

"That place was amazing!"

"Did you see those machines?"

"It looked like a secret laboratory!"

But Haiyan stopped walking.

He turned once more to look at the towering buildings behind the fence.

Something deep inside him whispered a warning.

That project wasn't just a technological development.

Something bigger was happening there.

Something no one else seemed to notice.

And somehow, Haiyan had a feeling that the mysterious merchant's project was only the beginning of a much larger story.

A story that would soon pull him and his friends into a world far more dangerous than they could imagine.
