Chapter 1 - The start (1/3)

"That's.. not my ceiling."

As I opened my eyes, the ceiling above me was different. Hell, it wasn't even lit up well enough to see clearly but I could tell by the way it was practically invisible that it wasn't my nice white ceiling that I prided myself on for painting it myself, not to brag or anything.

Unlike usual I sat up practically instantly after waking up, staring into the vast room that resembled a really empty boss room. Save for 4 beds centred in the middle of each of the 4 walls. Each corner had a little lamp atop of a desk, how its powered is beyond me since i couldn't make out a outlet - at least at this distance.

Behind me was a concrete wall with lines engraved into the space above where the bed touches the wall, perhaps tally's? Taking note of that, I focused on the 3 beds in front of me.

"H-Hey?" I called out, unsure if I wanted to hear a reply

I noticed one of the beds, specifically the one to my right had a shadowy figure rise upwards with their head desperately swaying left from right before a faint sound of crying echo's around the empty room.

"Are you alright?" I called out, once again

But the figure just cried, unbothered by my question. The childlike echo's of weeping seemed to wake up the person to her right, the man on the opposite side of the room relative to me. The figure was greatly dim and I couldn't make out what their figure even looked like.

A deep and hoarse voice called out, however it stopped half way to cough before continuing with a clearer voice

"Who's awake?"

The voice sounded dominant - A natural leader if you may, which personally I consider a jackpot.

"Me, I'm in the bed opposite from your side." I replied with my weakest voice, being seen as vulnerable would make being protected easier if its needed

"Lets meet at the bed between us, with the crying one."

The way he gave commands made me feel pretty damn compelled to follow, looks like my observation was right.

Leaving my bed was strange as my legs felt weak, so I had to stumble over to the meeting place. The floor was cold. My feet were cold. The mans commands were cold and concise. However being told to hurry up when trying my best was slightly annoying, however i suppose i will let it slide.

"Did you just laugh?"

"Uhm, no sir"

"Grab that lamp too, we need light here."

And so I diverted course to the closest lamp, obediently and eventually grabbed the unwired lamp. Maybe its battery powered? However the desk holding the lamp had a nice and soft rog underneath it which proved to be a good break from the cold floor torturing me on my journey.

Two of us standing in front of a bed, illuminated by a single lamp on the end of the crying persons (who seems to be a girl) bed.

"This is a nice rug"

"Thought you'd like it so I brought it with me"

Honestly I did bring it for this man to see me as someone who helps him, but it feels pretty damn good to rest on.

The girl started rocking back and forth, arms tucked in between her raised knees while the ceaseless tears continued to flow; However her gown had red splatters around waist height, a detail me and Mr leader noticed as he looked at each other in unison. He nodded at me and I returned the gesture, this woman is something I'm not.

"I-i think ill go check on the 4th person"

I stepped back, hoping the walk there and back took eternity.

A familiar voice however, decided to say finally say something.

"I..I'm sorry."

"Sorry for what?" The guy I deemed leader who ill call 3 from now on took this question to ask the girl, pressing for answers that might confirm our safety.

(He woke up third out of the 4 so he's 3 and the girl is 2, that's my logic around the names anyhow)

"I'm sorry"

"I'm sorry"

"I'm sor-"

"Cut it out"

Her face raised, meeting my gaze wearing a expression of shock.

"We know you're sorry, answer the question or shut up" Being ruthless shows my authority while being submissive to 3, might as well try secure a role in this hierarchy.

I continued to walk towards the 4th bed opposite the bed we gathered at, left of my bed. The risk I took right now may be stupid as I don't know what happens if we survive. However I doubt its too late to go back on, I hope anyway.

One step at a time, the distance drew closer until something felt off. The floor was growing more cold the closer to the middle I came and the light obstructed the middle as the light was only from the corners, the middle was naturally the darkest in the room.

Then suddenly, at the darkest point i felt my feet freeze and they never met the floor. Rushing to rebalance myself I shouted over to the bed I came from.

"Hey! I think there's something in the centre of the room"

"What is it?" 3 responded

"I think its a pit, just a really cold one."
