Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 04

The morning sun was barely up when Naruto arrived at the Academy training grounds. He'd been here for an hour already, practicing the leaf-sticking exercise Hinata had shown him. His forehead was slick with sweat, and his hands trembled from the effort of channeling just enough chakra to the right places.

"Still here, Naruto?" Iruka's voice cut through the morning air as he approached.

Naruto looked up, a determined grin on his face despite his exhaustion. "Dattebayo! I'm not leaving until I can do this perfectly!"

Iruka smiled, setting down a small bag he'd been carrying. "I can see that. How many leaves have you managed to stick so far?"

"Just two," Naruto admitted, wiping his brow. "But I'll get all ten by the end of the day. Believe it!"

"That's the spirit," Iruka said, pulling out two bento boxes from his bag. "I brought breakfast. You should eat something."

Naruto's stomach growled loudly at the mention of food, and he laughed sheepishly. "Guess I got a little carried away with training."

As they ate, Iruka watched Naruto with a thoughtful expression. "You've been working really hard lately, Naruto. I'm proud of you."

Naruto paused mid-bite, surprised by the praise. "You are?"

"Of course," Iruka said, his voice warm. "I know it hasn't been easy for you, but you never give up. That's what being a shinobi is all about."

Naruto ducked his head, a small smile on his face as he focused on his food. "Thanks, Iruka-sensei. That means a lot."

They finished their meal in comfortable silence, the sounds of the waking village beginning to fill the air around them. As Naruto packed away the empty bento boxes, Iruka spoke again.

"Naruto, I wanted to talk to you about something. It's about your team placement for the upcoming exams."

Naruto's head snapped up, his eyes wide with sudden interest. "My team? You mean who I'll be working with?"

Iruka nodded, his expression turning serious. "Yes. The Academy has been considering various combinations, trying to create balanced teams that will complement each other's strengths and weaknesses."

A flicker of unease passed through Naruto. He knew his reputation among the other students wasn't the best. "And... what have they decided?"

Iruka hesitated for a moment, choosing his words carefully. "They're still finalizing the teams, but I wanted to let you know that your name has come up in discussions. Some instructors have expressed concerns about your ability to work well with others."

Naruto's shoulders slumped, and he looked down at his hands. "I guess that's fair. I haven't exactly been the best team player in the past."

"That's not entirely true," Iruka said firmly. "You've shown great improvement lately, especially in your willingness to learn from others. Like with Hinata, for example."

At the mention of Hinata's name, Naruto's head shot up, his eyes bright with sudden interest. "Hinata? She's been talking about me?"

Iruka chuckled. "Not exactly. But I've noticed how you two have been studying together. It's good to see you making an effort to connect with your classmates."

Naruto's cheeks flushed slightly, and he scratched the back of his head. "Yeah, well, Hinata's pretty amazing. She's really smart and kind, and she doesn't treat me like I'm some kind of troublemaker all the time."

"That's because she sees the real you, Naruto," Iruka said gently. "And I think it's time more people did the same."

The weight of Iruka's words settled on Naruto, and for a moment, he was silent. Then, slowly, a determined expression crossed his face.

"You know what, Iruka-sensei? You're right. I've been so focused on proving myself that I forgot the most important thing about being a shinobi."

Iruka raised an eyebrow, curious. "And what's that?"

"Protecting the people precious to me," Naruto said firmly. "That's what being a shinobi is really about. And if I want to do that, I need to be someone my precious people can rely on. Someone who can work with others, not just go it alone."

Iruka's eyes widened in surprise, and then a wide smile spread across his face. "Naruto, that's... that's a very mature way of looking at things."

Naruto grinned back, his blue eyes sparkling with newfound determination. "Believe it! From now on, I'm going to be the best team player ever! No one will be able to say I can't work with others."

As if on cue, the sound of approaching footsteps caught their attention. Naruto and Iruka turned to see Kiba and Akamaru bounding towards them, followed by Hinata walking at a more sedate pace.

"Morning, Iruka-sensei! Naruto!" Kiba called out, his grin wide. "Fancy meeting you here. Training this early, huh?"

"Morning, Kiba, Hinata," Naruto replied, waving. He noticed the slight flush on Hinata's cheeks as she smiled shyly at him. "Yeah, I'm trying to get better at chakra control."

Kiba snorted, ruffling Akamaru's fur. "Chakra control? That's boring! I'm working on my taijutsu with Akamaru. We're going to be the fastest and strongest team in the exams!"

Hinata stepped forward, her voice soft but clear. "That's wonderful, Kiba. But Naruto-kun right, chakra control is important too. It's the foundation for many advanced techniques."

Kiba rolled his eyes but didn't argue further. Instead, he turned to Iruka. "Hey, Iruka-sensei, have the team placements been announced yet? I want to know who I'm going to be stuck with."

Iruka chuckled, shaking his head. "Not yet, Kiba. But they should be posted later today. Why don't you all head to the classroom? I'm sure your other classmates are eager to find out as well."

As the group made their way towards the Academy building, Naruto found himself walking alongside Hinata. He glanced at her, noticing how she seemed to be studying him with those pale, lavender eyes.

"Hey, Hinata," he said softly, not wanting the others to overhear. "Thanks again for helping me with the chakra control exercises. I think I'm starting to get the hang of it."

Hinata's eyes widened slightly, and a small smile graced her lips. "You're welcome, Naruto-kun. I'm glad I could help. You've been working very hard."

Naruto scratched the back of his head, feeling a bit embarrassed by the praise. "Yeah, well, I've got to get stronger if I want to protect the people I care about. Believe it!"

As the words left his mouth, Naruto realized what he'd said. He glanced at Hinata, suddenly worried that he might have said too much. But to his surprise, Hinata was smiling, a soft, warm expression that made his heart skip a beat.

"I know you will, Naruto-kun," she said quietly. "I believe in you."

Before Naruto could respond, they arrived at the classroom. The usual morning chaos greeted them - students chatting excitedly, some already speculating about their team placements. Naruto and Hinata took their seats, with Naruto making sure to save a spot for Iruka.

As the final bell rang and Iruka entered the room, a hush fell over the class. Every eye was on their teacher, waiting with bated breath for the announcement they'd all been anticipating.

Iruka smiled, setting his books down on the desk. "I know you're all eager to find out about your team placements. And I promise, you'll know soon enough. But first, I have an important announcement to make."

The room buzzed with excitement and curiosity. Iruka waited for the noise to die down before continuing.

"As many of you know, the Chunin Exams are coming up. This year, we're trying something a little different. Instead of the usual three-man cells, we'll be experimenting with four-man teams for this exam cycle."

A murmur ran through the class at this news. Naruto exchanged surprised glances with Hinata, who looked equally shocked.

Iruka raised his hand for silence. "These four-man teams will be designed to maximize each member's strengths while also challenging them to develop new skills. It's an opportunity for growth, both as individuals and as a team."

He picked up a piece of paper from his desk, unfolding it with deliberate slowness. "Now, without further ado, here are your team assignments for the Chunin Exam preparation period..."

Naruto found himself holding his breath, his heart pounding in his chest. He glanced around the room, seeing the same anticipation mirrored on his classmates' faces.

Iruka began to read, and Naruto strained to hear over the sudden rush of blood in his ears. "Team 7 will be: Sasuke Uchiha, Sakura Haruno, and..."

Naruto's stomach dropped. He wasn't in Team 7? But that was the famous team, the one everyone wanted to be on.

"and Naruto Uzumaki," Iruka finished.

A surprised gasp escaped Naruto's lips. He was on Sasuke's team? With Sakura too? This was unexpected.

Iruka continued, "Team 8 will be: Kiba Inuzuka, Shino Aburame, Hinata Hyuga, and..."

Naruto's head snapped up, his eyes locking onto Hinata. She was on a different team? But they'd been studying together, working well as a pair...

"and Choji Akimichi," Iruka concluded.

A wave of mixed emotions crashed over Naruto. Relief that he was on a team at all, surprise at his teammates, and a twinge of disappointment that he wouldn't be working directly with Hinata.

As Iruka finished reading out the team assignments, the classroom erupted into chatter. Students were exclaiming, some looking pleased, others disappointed or surprised.

Naruto turned to Hinata, wanting to say something, anything, but finding himself at a loss for words. Their eyes met, and in that moment, a silent understanding passed between them. They might not be on the same team, but their connection, their shared determination to grow stronger, remained unbroken.

Hinata smiled softly at Naruto, a look of encouragement in her eyes. "Good luck, Naruto-kun. I know you'll do great things with your team."

Naruto swallowed hard, returning her smile with one of his own. "Thanks, Hinata. You too. I'll be cheering for Team 8, believe it!"

As the class began to disperse, heading off to their respective training areas, Naruto felt a hand on his shoulder. He looked up to see Iruka standing beside him, his expression serious.

"Naruto, I need to speak with you and your new team. There are some important details about the Chunin Exam preparation that you need to know."

Naruto nodded, his earlier excitement tempered by the gravity in Iruka's voice. "Sure, Iruka-sensei. Lead the way."

As they walked out of the classroom, Naruto glanced back once, catching Hinata's eye. She waved, a small but determined gesture, and Naruto felt a surge of resolve. He might not be on her team, but he would make her proud. He would make them all proud.

After all, he was Naruto Uzumaki. And he was just getting started.
