Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 – The Race of Two

The sun was beginning to soften into late afternoon when the organizers announced the next game. "Tie‑the‑leg race!" one shouted cheerfully. "Pairs will have their legs bound together, and they must run to the finish line. The fastest wins!"

Excitement rippled through the crowd. Employees laughed, interns squealed nervously, and pairs began forming quickly. Elena looked around, uncertain. "I've never done this before," she admitted.

Adrian, standing beside her, smiled calmly. "Then we'll learn together. Shall we?"

She hesitated, then nodded. "Alright. But don't blame me if we fall."

He chuckled softly. "If we fall, we'll fall together."

The rope was tied around Adrian's right leg and Elena's left, binding them side by side. She wobbled immediately, clutching his arm for balance. "This feels impossible," she muttered.

Adrian steadied her, his hand firm but gentle. "We'll find a rhythm. Step together. Left, right. Left, right."

They practiced a few steps, awkward at first, then smoother. Elena laughed nervously. "We look ridiculous."

Adrian grinned. "Ridiculous but determined."

The whistle blew, and the race began. Pairs stumbled forward, some collapsing in heaps of laughter, others sprinting with surprising coordination. Adrian and Elena moved carefully, chanting softly, "Left, right, left, right."

At first, they kept pace, their steps surprisingly synchronized. Elena's hair flew in the wind, her laughter mixing with the cheers around them. Adrian's focus was steady, his hand guiding her balance.

But halfway down the track, a couple surged ahead. They were perfectly in sync, their movements fluid, their speed unmatched. Elena gasped. "They're so fast!"

Adrian chuckled. "Looks like they've practiced this at home."

Elena laughed breathlessly. "We're doomed."

They tried to quicken their pace, but the rope tugged awkwardly. Elena stumbled, nearly falling, and Adrian caught her instantly. "Careful," he murmured.

She clung to his arm, her cheeks flushed. "I told you I'd mess up."

He shook his head. "You didn't. We're just… not as rehearsed as them."

The couple crossed the finish line first, raising their arms in victory. The crowd cheered loudly. Adrian and Elena arrived moments later, laughing at their own clumsy sprint.

The organizers handed the winning couple a prize basket. Elena sighed, half amused, half disappointed. "We lost."

Adrian smiled faintly. "We didn't lose. We finished. And we laughed."

She looked at him, her heart warming despite herself. "You always twist things to sound better."

He shrugged lightly. "Assistants should keep morale high."

Their colleagues teased them playfully. "You two looked like you were dancing instead of running!" one joked.

Elena laughed, covering her face. "It was embarrassing."

Adrian smirked. "Embarrassing, maybe. But fun."

Meanwhile, Marcus watched from the sidelines, clutching his chest dramatically. "He's running tied to her leg, catching her when she stumbles, laughing with her… If she ever finds out he's the CEO, I'm finished." He muttered, "I'll die of a heart attack before this charade ends."

As the crowd dispersed, Elena sat on the grass, catching her breath. Adrian sat beside her, handing her a bottle of water. "Here. You earned it."

She smiled, taking a sip. "Thanks. Even if we lost, it was… nice."

Adrian looked at her, his voice soft. "Sometimes losing together feels better than winning alone."

Her cheeks warmed, and she quickly looked away. "You're strange."

He chuckled. "Maybe. But I'll keep being strange if it makes you smile."

The sun dipped lower, casting long shadows across the park. The laughter of colleagues echoed in the distance, but for a moment, Elena and Adrian sat quietly, side by side, bound not by ropes anymore, but by something unspoken.

As the crowd dispersed from the race, the organizers announced the final treat of the day: a barbecue feast. Colleagues cheered, hungry after hours of games. But when the question arose of who would cook, Adrian stepped forward. "I'll handle it," he said calmly, rolling up his sleeves.

Elena blinked in surprise. "You? You're going to cook for all of us?"

Adrian smiled faintly. "Assistants should know how to feed their colleagues too."

The grill flared to life, and Adrian worked with practiced ease. He laid skewers of vegetables and meat across the hot surface, turning them carefully, brushing them with sauce, and sprinkling spices with precision. The aroma spread quickly, drawing cheers from the crowd.

Elena watched, impressed. "You look like you've done this before."

Adrian chuckled softly. "Maybe once or twice."

Marcus, standing at the edge of the crowd, nearly fainted. He whispered to himself, "Once or twice? He practiced a dozen times in secret! I remember him grilling in the company courtyard at midnight, muttering about sauce ratios and charcoal heat. The CEO of the company, practicing barbecue like a trainee chef… and now he's serving interns."

The colleagues gathered around, laughing and enjoying the food. Adrian handed Elena a skewer, his expression calm. "Here. Try this."

She took a bite, her eyes widening. "This is… really good."

He smiled faintly. "I'm glad."

The atmosphere grew warm and lively. People clapped Adrian on the back, praising his cooking. Elena laughed with her colleagues, her heart lighter than it had been in weeks.

Marcus groaned, clutching his chest again. "He's cooking barbecue for interns, smiling like a chef, and everyone loves it. If she ever finds out who he really is, I'm finished."

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the smell of grilled food lingered in the air, mingling with laughter and chatter. Elena sat beside Adrian, enjoying the feast. She glanced at him, her voice soft. "You're strange… but maybe not so bad."

Adrian looked at her, his heart steady but full. "Then I'll keep being strange."

For Elena, it was just a fun day with colleagues. For Adrian, it was another step toward fulfilling the promise he had carried all these years. And for Marcus, it was another day of sheer terror—watching his boss play assistant, chef, and partner all at once.
