Chapter 36 - Chapter 36. Public. Not Private.

Gabriel did not sleep Friday night.

He worked.

But not on contracts.

On correction.

By eight-thirty, he was inside his office studio — neutral background, controlled lighting, camera positioned deliberately.

Marcus stood behind the monitor.

"Keep it concise," his PR director advised. "Direct. Calm."

Gabriel adjusted his cufflinks once.

Then looked straight into the lens.

And spoke.

"I don't date multiple women."

No hesitation.

No smirk.

No charm.

"I have always been clear about that."

A measured breath.

"The images circulating this week are being framed without context. The interaction was brief, unplanned, and did not represent any ongoing relationship."

His tone did not waver.

"I am in an exclusive relationship. I value privacy — but I value clarity more."

A pause.

"This narrative ends here."

He stepped back.

Marcus lowered the camera slowly.

"That will trend within minutes," he said carefully.

Gabriel nodded once.

"Upload it."

But he wasn't finished.

"Pull the gala security footage," he added.

Marcus blinked. "From the hotel?"

"Yes."

"That's aggressive."

"So is speculation."

Twenty minutes later, the CCTV clip was on the screen.

Grainy but clear.

Lena approaching.

Lena touching his arm.

Gabriel stepping back almost immediately.

His body angled away.

No intimacy.

No lingering.

Just a moment captured out of context.

"Overlay timestamps," Gabriel instructed. "Match it against the photographer's frame."

Marcus studied him.

"You're sure you want to release internal footage?"

"I'm sure."

Because Camille hadn't accused him of betrayal.

She had accused him of negligence.

And negligence was correctable.

Within the hour, both videos were live.

The first: his direct statement.

The second: the footage proving the photograph misleading.

Comment sections ignited.

Speculation shifted.

Narratives collapsed.

But Camille didn't see it.

Her phone had been on silent all evening.

She was reading.

Trying not to think.

Trying not to feel how quiet the week had been.

She hadn't expected him to chase.

She had expected him to understand.

And when he hadn't—

She adjusted.

There was a knock at her door at 10:47 p.m.

She frowned.

Not expecting anyone.

Another knock.

Steady.

Controlled.

Her pulse shifted before her mind did.

She opened the door.

And froze.

Gabriel stood there.

No security.

No driver.

Just him.

Dark shirt. Sleeves rolled slightly. Expression unreadable.

"You didn't call," she said before she could stop herself.

"No."

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"Why are you here?"

He studied her face.

Taking in the distance she'd perfected over days.

"Because I finally understood you," he said quietly.

Her expression did not change.

Understood?

"You dismissed me," she replied.

"I corrected myself."

Her jaw tightened.

"You're late."

"I know."

Silence lingered between them.

She hadn't seen the videos.

She hadn't seen the statement.

So to her—

This was still unfinished.

Still unresolved.

"You don't get to disappear for four days and then appear at my door like this," she said calmly.

"I didn't disappear."

"You minimised."

The word was sharp.

He stepped closer, but not inside yet.

"I said I don't date multiple women," he reminded her.

"You did."

"And I meant it."

"That wasn't the issue."

"I know."

That caught her.

A flicker of surprise.

"I know," he repeated. "You weren't questioning my loyalty. You were questioning my visibility."

She stared at him.

He continued.

"You don't compete. You withdraw."

A breath caught in her chest.

"You don't scream," he added. "You assess."

She hadn't told him that directly.

He had figured it out.

"How?" she asked quietly.

"I listened."

Silence.

Charged.

Different.

"You should check your phone," he said finally.

Her brows drew together.

"Why?"

"Because I don't correct things halfway."

That was the moment her composure cracked slightly.

"You made a statement?"

"I made two."

Her heart shifted before logic could.

"You didn't have to."

"Yes," he said firmly. "I did."

Not for the public.

For her.

She stepped back slowly.

Allowing him inside.

The door closed behind them.

The air changed instantly.

This wasn't about damage control anymore.

This was about something far more dangerous—

A man who had chosen.

Publicly.

Without being forced.

She looked at him again.

And this time—

There was no distance in her eyes.

Only heat.
