Chapter 5 - After Silence

There was no announcement.

No mechanical noise.

No red lights.

Just a door that opened silently.

The room they entered wasn't a trap, and it didn't resemble any of the previous rooms.

It was spacious, rectangular, with an uncomfortably low ceiling that seemed to press against their chests.

The light was a steady white, without flickering, without warning.

The metal floor was cold, cleaner than it should have been… and that alone was unsettling.

Lianne stopped at the threshold.

Her feet refused to move forward for a moment.

Ariane noticed immediately. He didn't look directly at her, just slowed down until he was beside her.

"This is more dangerous than any trap," he said in a very low voice.

"Because it's quiet?" she whispered.

"Because they haven't done anything yet."

Inside, there were other survivors.

Eight… nine… ten. Some sat on the floor with their backs to the wall, some stood stiffly, and others watched each other with suspicion.

No one spoke.

The silence here was not a comfort.

It was a suspended sentence.

Lianne took two steps forward and looked around.

No wires.

No blades.

No holes in the floor.

"Where's the trap?" she asked, her voice barely audible.

Arian didn't answer right away.

He watched the walls… the corners… the ceiling… then said,

"The trap isn't here yet. We are the trap."

A minute passed… two… Time began to weigh heavily.

One of the participants, a young man in his early twenties, his clothes stained with blood that wasn't all his, broke the silence abruptly:

"This is nonsense!"

His voice echoed harshly in the room.

"If they want to kill us, let them! Why are we waiting?!"

He took a step forward, then another.

Lianne felt a pang in her stomach. "Ariane…"

"Don't look," he said immediately, his voice sharp.

But she looked.

Nothing happened at first.

Then—

A sharp sound. Dry. Just one.

Not an explosion.

Not a scream.

Something more like a bone cracking inside.

The young man stopped abruptly, his body freezing, his eyes widening.

Then he fell.

He simply fell.

On the floor, a pool of blood began to spread slowly beneath him… A terrifying stillness… No movement, no resistance.

A small hole in his neck.

Delicate. Clean.

No one saw where it came from.

Silence erupted in their chests.

A woman gasped, then bit her hand to keep from screaming.

A man backed away until he hit the wall.

Someone vomited on the floor.

Lianne felt her legs go weak. Ariane positioned himself in front of her without a second thought, his body a barrier between her and the corpse.

"Remember this scene," he whispered harshly. "This is the law here."

There was no sound after that.

No one dared speak.

The next few minutes dragged on, as if time itself were mocking them.

The body was left where it lay.

Not moved.

Not hidden.

The message was clear:

Look. And learn.

Lianne couldn't tear her eyes away.

The scene wasn't excessively bloody…

And that made it worse.

"They don't want us to understand…" she said, her voice trembling. Ariane finished for her: "They want us to obey."

The floor began to make a faint sound.

Not movement.

Not a trap.

A pulse.

Light… steady… as if the room itself were breathing. One of the walls slid slowly away, revealing a narrow passage.

No voice guided them.

No instructions.

Only one choice.

Arian leaned toward Lianne: "From now on, trust no one but me. And don't show your fear. The fearful are chosen first."

Lianne swallowed, then nodded.

Before they moved, she looked one last time at the body.

The man wasn't evil.

He wasn't a hero.

He was simply… the first to dare.

And here, daring meant death.

They began walking toward the passage, and fear was no longer a shock…

but a constant state.
