Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Shop That Shouldn’t Exist

Rain tapped against the glass window in a slow, steady rhythm.

Lucian leaned back in the old plastic chair behind the counter and stared at the empty convenience store. The fluorescent lights above buzzed softly, giving everything a pale glow that made the place feel more lifeless than it actually was.

Another quiet night.

He drummed his fingers lazily on the countertop.

"Thrilling," he muttered.

Taking the late-night shift had seemed like a decent idea at first. The pay was slightly better, and the manager had promised it would be easy work. Most people didn't shop at three in the morning, so Lucian could spend most of the shift reading, watching videos, or just relaxing.

What the manager hadn't mentioned was how unbelievably boring it could get.

No customers.

No conversation.

Just silence.

Lucian glanced at the clock on the wall.

3:17 AM.

"Only five more hours," he said to himself. "Easy."

The refrigerator near the drinks hummed quietly. A faint smell of instant noodles lingered in the air.

Lucian rested his chin in his hand and looked out the large glass window facing the street.

Rain fell steadily onto the pavement outside, turning the empty parking lot into a shimmering mirror reflecting the neon store sign.

The sign flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Lucian raised an eyebrow.

"Don't die on me now," he murmured.

The sign flickered again before stabilizing.

Lucian chuckled quietly.

"Man, if the power goes out, I'm walking home."

He reached for his phone, scrolling through random videos to pass the time. A compilation of funny animal clips filled the screen.

A raccoon fell off a fence.

Lucian snorted.

"Relatable."

He kept watching.

Another clip played. A cat dramatically flopped over like it had just been betrayed by the universe.

Lucian shook his head.

"I respect the commitment."

The automatic door suddenly slid open.

Lucian looked up immediately.

"Welcome—"

He stopped.

No one was there.

The door stood open, letting cold night air drift into the store.

Lucian frowned.

"Hello?"

Silence.

He stood up from his chair and walked toward the entrance, glancing outside.

The parking lot was empty.

No cars.

No people.

Just rain.

Lucian rubbed the back of his neck.

"…Okay, that's weird."

He stepped outside and looked around.

That's when he noticed it.

Something was wrong with the street.

Very wrong.

Across the road, where several small businesses normally stood, there was nothing.

No buildings.

No lights.

No sidewalk.

Just darkness stretching into the distance like the world had been erased.

Lucian blinked.

"…What?"

He stepped closer to the edge of the parking lot.

Still darkness.

Endless, silent darkness.

His heart started beating faster.

"This is a dream," he said quietly. "I'm definitely dreaming."

Lucian quickly turned around and walked back inside the store.

The moment he crossed the doorway, the lights flickered violently.

Once.

Twice.

Then everything went dark.

Complete silence filled the room.

Lucian froze.

"…Okay."

He held his hands out in front of him, trying to see anything in the darkness.

"This is officially the weirdest night shift ever."

Then something changed.

A faint green glow appeared beneath his feet.

Lucian looked down slowly.

Lines of glowing symbols spread across the floor like roots growing through the tiles. They moved smoothly, weaving across the ground and curling around the shelves and counters.

Lucian stared.

"…Alright."

The symbols pulsed softly with light.

"Either I've completely lost my mind," Lucian said calmly, "or the floor is doing magic."

The glowing lines gathered together in the center of the store, forming a circular pattern.

Rain continued falling outside, but the sound felt distant now.

Like the world had stepped back.

A voice suddenly echoed in the air.

Calm.

Ancient.

And strangely gentle.

"System initializing."

Lucian blinked slowly.

"…Did the store just talk?"

The glowing circle brightened.

"User detected."

Lucian pointed at himself.

"User?"

"Identity confirmed."

The light shifted.

"Lucian."

Lucian's eyebrows lifted.

"Okay, that's unsettling."

The voice continued.

"Lineage confirmed."

The symbols glowed brighter.

The light deepened into something heavier, older.

"Son of Gaia."

Lucian stared at the glowing floor.

"…Excuse me?"

The ground trembled slightly.

Not violently.

Just enough to make the shelves rattle.

Lucian grabbed the counter to steady himself.

"Alright," he said slowly. "I think someone owes me an explanation."

The voice spoke again.

"Multiverse Merchant System activated."

A shimmering screen appeared in the air above the counter.

Lucian leaned forward.

"…Oh."

Floating text filled the glowing interface.

WELCOME, LUCIAN

ROLE: Multiverse Merchant

LINEAGE: Son of Gaia

SHOP HUB: Initializing

WORLD TRAVEL: Locked

Lucian stared at the screen for several seconds.

"…So," he said slowly, "either I've fallen into a coma…"

He looked around the glowing store.

"…or my job just turned into a fantasy novel."

The interface flickered again.

New text appeared.

PRIMARY HUB CREATED

The convenience store shifted subtly.

The ceiling rose slightly higher.

The lighting softened into a warmer glow.

The shelves rearranged themselves silently.

Lucian turned in a slow circle.

"…My workplace just evolved."

The voice continued.

"This location is now designated as a Multiverse Merchant Hub."

Lucian crossed his arms.

"Of course it is."

He looked at the floating screen again.

"Alright, mysterious system voice," he said. "Let's say I believe you for a minute."

He leaned on the counter.

"What exactly does a Multiverse Merchant do?"

The interface changed again.

Travel to other worlds.

Acquire items.

Influence stories.

Earn Narrative Value.

Lucian read the list twice.

"…Other worlds?"

Images appeared on the screen.

Cities.

Battles.

Familiar characters.

Lucian squinted.

"Wait…"

One image showed a scene that looked like it came straight out of an anime.

Lucian pointed at it.

"That's anime."

Another image appeared.

A scene that looked exactly like a famous movie.

Lucian rubbed his chin.

"…That's definitely a movie."

More images flashed across the screen.

TV shows.

Anime fights.

Cinematic landscapes.

Lucian leaned against the counter and laughed.

Not nervously.

Honestly.

"Well," he said, smiling slightly, "this is either the coolest hallucination in human history…"

He looked around the glowing store again.

"…or the universe finally got tired of me being bored."

The system remained silent.

Lucian exhaled slowly.

Then he shrugged.

"You know what?"

He straightened up.

"Let's see what happens."

Outside, rain continued falling quietly against the empty world.

And somewhere beyond that darkness…

Countless other worlds waited.

Lucian had just been given the key.
